The rain promised to arrive on Saturday for the most important day of
the pilgrimages to the Church of our Lady of Guadalupe, arrived Friday
afternoon. It was a heavy rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning
and large waves splashing over the malecón. The rain didn´t stop the
processions, which were accompanied by booming tubas, horns and drums. Many
of the participants dress in white or in traditional embroidered
Mexican clothing. The children look particularly irresistible in
their straw sombreros and ribbon-braided hair. Saturday morning I awoke
to more of the familiar songs being sung on Juarez street, which was
closed to traffic all day. The procession of dancers, musicians and
"pilgrims" continued throughout the drizzle of a day and a downpour in
the evening, culminating with the joyful clanging of bells, horns
trumpeting, drums banging and voices singing "La Guadalupana" inside and
outside of the church at midnight.
Sitting with friends high on a terrace earlier in the week, I looked down to the jungle below us. In the distance between the reddish peeling bark of the trunks of two papelillo trees was a perfectly framed small, white sail of a boat moving slowly beneath the bluest of skies across the still and beautiful bay. A few moments later, Lynn Rogers recited this poem by e.e. cummings:
"i thank You God for most this amazing"
i thank You God for most this amazing
day: for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes
(i who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun's birthday; this is the birth
day of life and of love and wings: and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)
how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any—lifted from the no
of all nothing—human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?
(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)

Pam Lock - $100 USD
Richard R. Reed Foundation - 160,000 pesos = $9,402.92 USD
Richard Reed, a Scottsdale, Arizona resident and new homeowner in Puerto Vallarta, founded the Richard R. Reed Foundation this year. He has chosen to give grants benefiting children and animals in Puerto Vallarta, Arizona and Colorado. Richard is co-founder of the American Taekwando Association, holding the impressive title of Grand Master with a 9th Degree Black Belt, and is CEO and founder of ASF Payment Solutions.
After dinner Sunday evening with friends at their home in centro, a few blocks from our home, I saw an emaciated honey-colored Boxer mix pawing through an enormous pile of garbage on a street corner. Her teats were heavily filled with milk. I had been going to feed the homeless cats in the abandoned house after dinner, so had a small bag of cat food with me. The pretty dog walked tentatively towards me when I called to her, but after sniffing the Kirkland kibble, walked slowly away. I went immediately to the corner convenience store to buy hot dogs, but the sad dog, with teats swaying, trotted off into the dark night while three other dogs devoured the pile of kibble. This is what we see on the streets in Mexico. Starving cats and dogs. Pregnant cats and dogs. Intact male cats and dogs. Injured and sick cats and dogs. The numbers and percentages below the photo of the street dogs tell part of this story.
An estimated 40 abandoned cats and kittens have been poisoned on the isla Cuale to date. Locals believe it is the stall vendors and/or restaurants who are responsible. This is a very cruel way to eliminate an animal and is not a solution. Until the government institutes enforceable laws against pet abandonment, signs are posted on the island that dumping cats is not only cruelty to them, but also to wildlife, and people are educated and take advantage of the free clinics, cats will continue to be thrown away on the isla Cuale - and in many other places as well.
THANK YOU TO OUR GENEROUS SPONSORS:
