CHIMES OF BELLS

PEREGRINACIÓNES EN CALLE JUAREZ - LLEVANDO SUS ALAS

The wild and joyful ringing of church chimes announce the first twelve days of Christmas, which celebrates Our Lady of Guadalupe, the mother of México.  In some mornings and every evening, Juarez street is filled with costumed dancers, marching bands, and"pilgrims" dressed in white accompanied by musicians who play "La Guadalupana." They come from different colonias, some several miles away, to pay tribute and to bring offerings of food and flowers to the church of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

On the sidelines are colorful food stands selling hamburgers, tacos, tostadas quesadillas, corn on the cob, tangerines and a multitude of desserts. In between the pilgrimages and performances, children run up and down the street blowing bubbles and eating cotton candy.
COMIDA DEL RESTAURANTE JAIME - MI FAVORITA

With the ecstatic ringing of bells, I am always reminded of the poem written by Charles Appleton Longfellow on Christmas Day, 1863.  In despair over the Civil War, the enlistment of his son and the recent death of his wife, he wrote "I heard the Bells on Christmas Day."  First published in 1865, it wasn´t set to music until 1872.  There are always moments throughout history when it is difficult not to feel some degree of despair.  The poem written on Christmas Day so long ago ends with these lines:

"Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
´God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men.´"

PET PICNIC

The 10th annual Pet Picnic at Daiquiri Dick´s, organized by Laura Gelezunas, was a festive and 0successful one.  Supporters enjoyed the sweet guitars and voices of Jorge and Lenny,  a canine fashion show, delicious roast beef or turkey sandwiches, tangerines and ginger cookies, a raffle, and a live auction.  Thank you to professional auctioneer, Robert Burkheimer for donating his services and an unminted two dollar bill that he auctioned off.

PROGRAMA DE EDUCACIÓN DE PÈACEANIMALS
EDUCATION PROGRAM:  As PEACEAnimals clinics have not been operating in Vallarta for several weeks, there have been no education programs in the schools.  I was invited to make a presentation to approximately 70 students at Friederich Frobel, a private grammar school in colonia Emiliano Zapata on Wednesday. The children were polite and curious and eager to participate. All had seen starving, sick and injured cats and dogs living on the streets.  Ninety percent of the children said their families owned at least one pet.  Very few of their dogs and cats had been sterilized and no one came up with the right answer as to how many times a year a cat or a dog could have babies.  One fourth grader said that her dog had just given birth to eight puppies.  Many of the older students do FB and said they would look at the PEACEAnimals page.  If just one student gets her or his animal spayed or neutered, Wednesday morning will have been a success.

Due to non-sterilization and a lack of education, there are thousands of homeless cats and dogs living on the streets in Puerto Vallarta.  There are many hundreds waiting to be adopted in foster homes,  sanctuaries and the Centro de Acopio.   If you can foster an animal, have found a cat or dog, or would like to adopt a cat or dog, Please check our website on the "resource" tab for names and contacts of refuges, vets, etc.
