GREAT DANE -GREAT HEART

EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING STORM IN PUERTO VALLARTA      photo credit:  Alexandra Karam

GUADALAJARA

An 8 AM departure On Sunday morning morning on the very first-class ETN bus (very comfortable, wide reclining seats with only two on each side of the aisle - WiFi, movies and a not very tasty sandwich and soft drink) for Guadalajara.  I prefer going this way rather than trying to navigate through the city, where we don´t want to do any driving after arriving there.  We´re staying in Tlacquepaque, fifteen minutes away, to see the August 31st launch of the national spay/neuter campaign of Calle Cero, sponsored by Purina and promoted on Azteca TV.   The massive free clinic will take place in la Cofradía, a poor neighborhood of Tlacquepaque.

STERILIZATIONS - This week, Pets for Life, independent contractors with whom PEACEAnimals has a work agreement,  was at a sponsored clinic in la Cruz in Nayarit.  Their numbers are reported to the local government and not to PEACEAnimals.

Sterilizations at PEACEAnimals clinics:  All pet registration forms with signatures of owners or rescuers are submitted by Dr. Poli to the local department of health, with copies to PEACEAnimals.

DONATIONS TO PEACEANIMALS:

Francoise Koster - $100 USD - Francoise and her mother Jacqueline are owners of La
Poubelle Bistro & Bar in Hollywood.  The name intrigued me, so I took a look at the website.  Opened in 1969 by Jacqueline, the bistro has a superb menu...  "We utilize organic, local, small farm produce and meats & sustainable fish whenever possible.  We grow many of our own herbs, greens and vegetables on our own rooftop."

IMPORTANT NOTICE!

PEACE, A 501 (C)(3) has been processing donations for PEACEAnimals.  Amy Welch and her husband Bill, an accountant, have set up a new 501©(3).  Change is effective October 1, 2015.  Explanation  below:

In May, 2013, PEACEMEXICO, part of  the PEACE (USA) foundation,  was dissolved and reorganized as PEACE Punta de Mita, A.C. (A.C. indicates Mexican-government approved charitable status).   PEACE Punta de Mita programs are concentrated in the Punta de Mita-Higuera Blanca area and focus on three categories:  Education, Health/Lifestyle, and Community Pride.

The board of directors of PEACE (USA) recently voted to administer the PEACE (USA)  foundation with donations only supporting the communities of Punta de Mita and Higuera Blanca.   Effective October 1, PEACE (USA) will no longer be administering funds outside those areas.

In September, 2015, Amy Welch, who has served as treasurer of PEACE (USA) and who is a devoted supporter of PEACEanimals,  founded Banderas Bay Charities, Inc.    The Oregon-based foundation  has 501 (c)(3) status and will be supporting PEACEAnimals.

As of October 1, all donations for PEACEAnimals free mobile spay/neuter clinics and education program will be processed through Banderas Bay Charities, Inc.

Checks can be made out to BBC,  Inc. or Banderas Bay Charities and should be earmarked for PEACEAnimals.

Banderas Bay Charities, Inc works with Canadian Children's Shelter of Hope to offer Revenue Canada tax credit for non-animal related missions.

RESCUED AND ADOPTED: "An emaciated six or seven-month old male albino Great Dane/Weimar, who is also deaf and blind., was found in an abandoned house in Tepic, Nayarit by members  of "Adopta un Amigo Tepic."
ENCONTRADO ASÍ EN TEPIC
When I saw the photos and information on FaceBook, I immediately sent an email to Troy Valens, owner of Cheeky Monkey and Sea Monkey restaurants  in Vallarta.  A few years ago Troy had adopted "Albina," now named "Bunny," a two-year old female albino Great Dane who is also deaf and blind.  Troy, who has an enormous heart, emailed back at once saying,

"With our history in taking care of Bunny and knowing the needs she has being blind and deaf, it would sadden me that another dog with the same conditions isn't given a chance to be in a loving home.  I would love to adopt him."
GRAN DANESE/WEIMAR  DE 6-7 MESES- SORDO Y CIEGO - RESCATADO
Y ADOPTADO POR TROY VALENS

EN CASA PUENTE EN TEPIC
Troy said he will probably name this dog "Rabbit,"as he looks almost exactly like his other dog Bunny, and has the same disadvantages.  Rabbit arrives in Vallarta September 1st with Yenny Modad and Leticia. He will be fostered by Gaby Ramirez,  manager of one of Troy´s restaurants until Troy arrives the end of September.  Rabbit will go with him to Oregon and will living a great life on 20 acres in the countryside with six other rescues and loving care.

"RABBIT" (¿ QUIZÁS SU NUEVO NOMBRE?)  EN CASA PUENTE CON LETICIA VELAZQUEZ  EN TEPIC

The fourth little kitten left on my doorstep in a parrot cage.    I almost always have PEACEAnimals business cards with me to hand out wherever I go.  I was at Coscto Tuesday,  and at the check-out counter, asked the pretty young woman if she had a pet, and handed her my card.   She didn´t, but said she wanted to adopt a kitten.  Serendipity!   I told her I had one, and she agreed to let me take it to be neutered in a few weeks.  I delivered the last little abandoned kitten to Cristina Sarahi two days later.  She has named him "Mike."
CRISTINA SARAHI ADOPTÓ EL ÚLTIMO GATITO QUE DEJARON EN FRENTE DE MI CASA  QUEDA LA MAMÁ TODAVIA.  SI LE INTERESA EN UNA CALICO MUY DULCE, FAVOR DE CONTACTARME.

Thank you to Soraya of Puro Gato and to  Lic. Gustavo Javier López López, who had  both offered to foster this kitten.

JOVEN MAMÁ ABANDONADA Y NECESITA HOGAR.  FAVOR DE CONTACTARME.

The pretty mama calico of the four kittens has recovered from the shock of being tossed out with her babies, and is now docile and affectionate.  She will be spayed in three weeks and needs a foster or permanent home.  Please contact me if you are interested.   This is a very nice cat and she has been a devoted mother.  It was sad to see her looking for her last little kitten.  She mewed for days after he had gone to his new home.

ABANDONADA CON SUS 4 BEBÉS. YA SE FUERON EN ADOPCIÓN SUS BEBÉS Y ELLA NECESITA HOGAR.

RESCUED AND NEEDS HOME:

I saw a message and the photo below on FB (Huelitas Catninas) on Friday from Cesar Lopez,  saying that a tiny kitten had been found on the street by a friend of his who couldn´t keep it.  I thought maybe the mama calico could nurse it, so picked up the kitten, whose eyes wouldn´t open because they were so encrusted with pus.  So was its nose.  This crusting is symptomatic of an upper respiratory infection, which is highly contagious amongst felines.   I took the kitten to our vet, Dr. Tamayo, who will put the beautiful female kitten in isolation for two weeks while she is being treated.   After being spayed at a PEACEAnimals clinic, the young kitty will need a good home. If you would like to meet this kitten, please stop by Dr. Tamayo´s clinic in colonia Versalles - Calle Viena 178  - Local ·4,

GATITA TIRADA Y RESCATADA.  ESTÁ EN TRATAMIENTO POR UNA INFECCIÓN DEL SISTEMA DE RESPIRACIÓN CON DR. JUAN TAMAYO.  NECESITA HOGAR EN 2 SEMANAS.

"TYSON" is a 3-4 year-old Lab-mix dog that spent almost two years at the Acopio before Lonna Hull rescued him.  Tyson is vaccinated, neutered and has had several months of behavior training at Tibet Canino with Angel.  Lonna says he is a very happy dog and not at all destructive. He loves to play fetch and catches the ball in mid-air. Tyson loves to run alongside the bicycle on a leash and walks well on a leash.  This great dog is currently in a foster home and needs a permanent home.  Contact:  littlzoo12

ARE ALL CALICO CATS FEMALE?

NIGHT BLOOMING JASMINE IN OUR GARDEN

I have relented.  Our AC has now been turned on in our bedrooms in the evenings and stays on most of the night.  I miss the heady perfume of the night blooming jasmine that wafts up from the garden to our bedroom window, but it´s too hot, even at midnight.  The heat and humidity are briefly broken by drenching rainfalls, which are almost always accompanied by loud cracking of lightning and waves of thunder that seem to roll like ocean waves across the night skies.  But there is less rain this year, and the oppressive weather arrived in June,  which was two months earlier than usual.   The water temperature in Banderas Bay is in the mid-80´s, which makes for a tepid swim.  The water in the rivers are cooler than the water in Banderas Bay and often favored by locals for swims.
PARQUE LOS SAUCES EN COLONIA LAS ARALIAS

PEACEAnimals has held several clinics in colonia las Aralias, a quiet middle-class neighborhood directly to the east of Costco.  Las aralias means "weeping willows" in Spanish.  Supposedly there were many weeping willows in this area before it was developed, but though there must be a few left, I didn´t see any.   Sofi Gonzalez, animal advocate and constant rescuer, always lends the team her spacious indoor/outdoor bodega,  which is directly across the street from the leafy green parque los Sauces.
BODEGA DE SOFI GONZALEZ EN COLONIA LAS ARALIAS
The pleasant park, which has a very small playground and a white bandstand with red tile roof, was empty of people and dogs on Thursday morning when I went to the clinic. I was especially glad to see young Pit Bull siblings there for spaying and neutering - because this is still uncommon for this breed -
PIT BULL - HEMBRA PARA ESTERILIZAR
and grateful to see the feral cats that Soraya of Puro Gato and Luz Wong had brought in to be sterilized and then released where found.    On Wednesday, the first day of our surgery weeks, the team sterilized 46 cats and dogs, 30 of which were rescue cats and kittens from AngeliCAT and Puro Gato.  Frank Ohly, who always volunteers on Wednesdays and Thursdays sent me a photo of five pretty puppies that had come in that day.  He said he didn´t understand how they could hear anything, because all of their ears were stuffed with enormously bloated ticks.  All ticks were removed with tweezers and dropped in a glass of alcohol while the puppies were sedated.

RESCUED AND ADOPTED:

RESCATADA DE LA ISLA CUALE Y ADOPTADA
"Sheba" - the very confident Siamese-mix cat abandoned and living mostly in a tree on the Isla Cuale.  She had been  collected by Puro Gato and taken to a PEACEAnimals clinic to be spayed.  Less than a year old, she was pregnant and aborted.

A few days after surgery, she was returned to the island, where she was being fed by Shannon and Adriana. She always ran down from her tree to see our dogs, so it was easy to see that a cat bite on her side was infected.  I took her to our vet, Dr. Tamayo, and then home to treat with antibiotics for two weeks and meds for hook worms.  Am keeping her, and so far my husband hasn´t noticed that we have one more cat.

By Dr. Poli for his daughter in Long Beach, who was visiting him here - a small female puppy rescued by Soraya of Puro Gato.
PERRITA RESCATADA DE SORAYA DE PURO GATO Y ADOPTADA POR DR. POLI PARA SU  HIJA QUIÉN VIVE EN LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA Y AHORA ESTÁ VISITANDO A SU PAPÁ.

"Cricket" - A female calico named by Gracie, Jack and Max Hite - is one of the four kittens that were brought to me in a parrot cage.  This lucky kitty will be living with Anna Laurita, her husband David Hite and their three children, whose home is a few blocks away from ours.  Anna is the owner and excellent instructor of Davanna Yoga. www.davannayoga.com  The kitten will be spayed after she reaches 8 weeks of age.
GATITA CALICO ADOPTADA-  CON GRACIE HITE

One of the two male kittens that arrived at my door in the parrot cage.  Friday morning I asked one of the trainers at The Fit Club if he knew anyone who wanted to adopt a kitten.
JAZMIN NOLAZCO ADOPTÓ EL TERCER GATITO DE LA HAULA PARA UN LORO.  QUEDA UNO MÁS.
José directed me across the street to a massage/facialist, etc. business, where his friend Jazmin Nolazco works and she confirmed she wanted one of the two brothers.

RESCUED AND NEED HOMES:

GATITA DE 7 SEMANAS - NECESITA HOGAR.  CONTACTO:  PURO GATO POR FB

Last week just before I was going to leave the house for an appointment, the doorbell rang.  Two men that I didn´t know were standing in front of me when I opened the door.   On the sidewalk a couple of feet away was an old white parrot cage with a panting, terrified calico cat and her four nursing babies inside.  The taller man of the two said he had found the family outside his front door.  I asked the men to wait while I called a few cat refuges and vets that sometimes can foster.  No luck.
The rescuer left with the parrot cage and the look-alike calico kitten with him.  I  kept the three four-week-old kittens in our bodega.  The mother jumps out the window of the bodega and up to the top terrace whenever I enter and watches me carefully while I socialize with her babies.
LA MAMÁ CALICO PREOCUPADA MIRANDO DE LA SEGUNDA TERRAZA A SUS BEBÉS EN LA BODEGA ABAJO

SOS!!  As I am going to California for 2 1/2 weeks,  the one remaining tabby/white male kitten needs a foster or permanent home.  The mama will be fed by our housesitter and hopefully she´ll still be here when I return.  Soraya will help me trap her and then she´ll be spayed.  As the uterus is fragile for 8 weeks after giving birth, there is a risk for rupturing if spayed sooner.

RESCATADOS - LA CALICO (MÁS ARRIBA EN LA CAJA)  Y UN MACHO ESTÁN ADOPTADOS.  EL OTRO MACHO NECESITA HOGAR.. FAVOR DE CONTACTAR PURO GATO POR FB.

RE CALICO CATS:  The only calico cats I´ve spotted as calicos have been black, orange and white, so I didn´t recognize the grey, beige and white kitten I was fostering as a calico.  I checked what I thought was only an almost-calico kitten for sex, and it was a female.  When Anna and her family took the kitten to their vet for a check-up on Friday, he said because it was a calico, it was a female cat and therefore unnecessary to check sex.  It was a very safe bet.  But not a100% certainty.
CALICOS

I learned a few years ago that a calico cat is not always female.   One in approximately three thousand calicos is male and only one in ten thousand of male calicos is fertile.  For a male cat to have the tri-coloration of a calico, the feline has to have an extra X-chromosome.
TABBY CALICO
The X-chromosome is what determines, with the possible exception of white, fur color in a cat.  The Y chromosome of course determines the sex.
CALICO
THE XXY COMBINATION FOUND IN MALE CALICOS CAN OCCUR WHEN THERE IS AN INCOMPLETE DIVISION OF THE MALE´S XY CHROMOSOME PAIR AT THE TIME OF FERTILIZATION - AND IT DOESN´T JUST HAPPEN IN CATS, IT ALSO OCCURS WITH HUMANS.

AMANDA LOUISE JIMENEZ FREDERICK RESCUED A PUPPY WITH SEVERE MANGE.  THE 4-MONTH PUPPY IS NOW COMPLETELY CURED AND WAS SPAYED AT THE RECENT PEACEANIMALS CLINIC IN COLONIA VALLE DORADO.   SHE IS VACCINATED, HOUSE TRAINED AND UTTERLY SWEET WITH HUMANS, CATS AND DOGS.  CONTACT AMANDA VIA FB.
ANTES/BEFORE  SUFRIENDO DE SARNA - SUFFERING FROM MANGE

DESPUÉS/AFTER - TIENE 4 MESES - OPERADA- VACUNADA- BUENA CON PERROS Y GATOS, ENTRENADA Y ES MY DULCE

REGARDING CATS AND KITTENS IN PUERTO VALLARTA:  There are literally thousands living on the streets.  This week, I asked a few of the cat sanctuaries how many they had in residence.
PURO GATO - ADOPTATÓN- 2 ENCONTRARON HOGARES
Responses:  Puro Gato - 35 cats and 35 kittens; Paraiso Felino: 275 cats and 25 kittens; PurrProject:  150 cats and 20-25 kittens: AngeliCAT:   Centro de Acopio (no-kill pound) 35 cats and kittens  Dozens are living on the Isla Cuale. If you happen to be in the park there and see any discarded kittens, please gather up and

give to one of the gardeners, who will make sure that Shannon Beston gets them for fostering, sterilizing and releasing back to the island if no homes found.

ACOPIO ADOPTATHON:   Adoptions from the no-kill pound are held monthly at the former city hall across from los arcos on the malecón.  On Saturday, five dogs were adopted, which is fantastic!  Only the small black Lab mix went back to the Acopio.  The cats and kittens for adoption looked hot and stressed.  Two PURO GATO kittens rescued from the Isla were adopted.

FIRST FREE VET CLINIC IN MEXICO OPENING SOON!  Location is in Iztapalapa, a very poor and very rough area of DF.  This is an exciting beginning for future permanent free vet clinics in this country.
