EL TUITO - A DAY TRIP

El Tuito.  The name is derived from the Pre-Hispanic language of Nahuatl and has several possible meanings, including "Little Valley" and "Place of Beauty."

PLAZA DE ARMAS- EL TUITO

Carratera 200 is a two-lane "highway" leading from centro Vallarta to el Tuito, thirty miles south.  This is very much a curving, ascending road that takes an hour´s driving time. After passing Boca de Tomatlán, the road leaves the coastline and most of the palms behind.  Gaining altitude, the trees are often oaks, cedars and conifers.  The last fifteen or twenty minutes of driving is green and straight,  with cows and horses in pens and corrals next to the road.
This is ranch and farm land filled with fruit trees - lemon, mango, orange, lime, guava and avocado.  The small town is known for its panela and Oaxaca cheeses, as well as honey, agave nectar and raicilla, a popular tequila-like drink.

The Plaza de Armas, the town square, resembles a western movie set - long adobe and brick buildings surround the bandstand and two enormous, glorious "Maria" (tropical evergreen) trees.
Just off the plaza is "Valle Azul," a simple and good restaurant for Mexican food and pizzas.  Also good, but blocks away, is "Mi Pueblito."  For serene days and nights, Rancho Primavera with its three rental houses, is a few miles east of town.  A bird watcher´s heaven, the 200-acre property has a large pond with long board and rowboat, lap pool, two dozen free roaming horses, numerous trails and thousands of trees.  https://ranchoprimavera.wordpress.com/

ARBOL MARÍA - PLAZA DE ARMAS - EL TUITO

COAPINOLE - a quiet, tree-lined Puerto Vallarta neighborhood with mostly dirt roads and simple homes.  A 30-minute drive northeast of centro,
COAPINOLE - VENDIENDO
the PEACEANIMALS clinic took place in the front section of a private home.  Almost directly across the street, vendors were busy painting dozens of large clay pots to sell.
LA LAGUNA EN COAPINOLE
A block away is an uninviting, murky green lagoon surrounded by a tall cyclone fence topped with barb wire.  On the morning I was there, a few dogs on leashes and a couple of small children in strollers were circling the cement path adjacent to the crocodile-less lagoon.

EL TUITO: Kai Doyle, a retired school teacher from San Francisco, organizes and hosts the annual clinic in el Tuito.  This includes raising funds for the extra expenses of gasoline and driving time for an outside Vallarta location.  Pet owners came from as far away as Chacala, an hour-and-a-half drive.  A male cat named "Chapo"  whose his owners said always escaped from their home, escaped from a kennel.
"AMOR" - RESCATADA, OPERADA Y ADOPTADA
And, happy ending, Kai adopted a "very sweet" mostly black with splashes of white street dog that had been collected from the plaza for spaying. Her name is now "Amor."

SOME FAVORITE PLACES

Hosting houseguests usually means taking them to favorite places, which is what I´ve been doing for this past week.  We visited:

Punta Negra ("Black Point") beach is a long strip of powdery sand just south of Puerto Vallarta.  This week,  the 79 degree water was extraordinarily calm and clear and filled with thousands of small fish close to shore.  Scores of pale pelicans with outstretched wings cruised over the bay before tucking in their wings and diving arrow-like into the glittery water close to where I was swimming.  Emerging immediately, pouched throats were thrown back, the catch gulped down and then a brief, bobbing break before another diving capture.
PLAYA PUNTA NEGRA - PEZES Y PELÍCANOS

KALI ECO PARK is located in the approximately 2300 hectares of ejido land in Playa Grande, named after the sandy beaches that used to exist next to the Pitillal river.
RESTAURANTE DE KALI ECO PARK - PLAYA GRANDE
Northeast of centro, and winding through green countryside, it takes about 25 minutes to arrive by car to to this gorgeous jungle-covered cantera hill land.  We saddled up in the small village of Playa Grande and rode along the river, which has several lovely swimming holes, to the very attractive, open-air restaurant.  Food and service are very good and hammocks and chaise longs are set up next to the swimming hole in the very clean river.
MONTANDO A CABALLO - KALI ECO PARK - PLAYA GRANDE
One can find the location by using Google maps or call for pick-up at MacroPlaza in the Kali vehicle - a flatbed with seats.  For reservations -horseback riding, bird watching or zip line: 114-2846

BOTANICAL GARDENS: For the membership luncheon on Saturday, February 2nd - a delicious and abundant buffet with open bar and a wonderful performance of folkloric dancing. Acres of hiking trails in the native jungle, strolls in manicured gardens and cool, invigorating swims in the swirling Tomatlán river below.

JARDÍNES BOTÁNICOS - NADANDO EN EL RÍO DE TOMATLÁN

The annual, one-week book fair at Aquiles Serdán plaza took place January 27th to February 3rd.
FERIA DE LIBROS EN LA PLAZA DE AQUILES SERDÁN
Although there were thousands of books for sale,  including Spanish translations of American and English classics, there were very few browsers and less vendors than last year.  Prices were low. A beautiful hardback on the national parks in the U.S. was priced at 50 pesos.  The manager commented that although the literacy rate in Mexico is about 97%, only 2.5% of Mexicans read books.

PLAZA PRINCIPAL - VALLE DORADO, NAYARIT

VALLE DORADO, NAYARIT - Almost directly across highway 200 from upscale Nuevo Vallarta, this is a neighborhood 45-minutes northeast of Vallarta composed of very modest, small homes. The immaculate plaza was empty of people and pets, but across the grassy field, the clinic was full on Thursday.
CLÍNICA EN VALLE DORADO
It is rare to see northerners at the clinics, but Raleigh Naas and his wife  brought their two rescue dogs from Mezcalitos.  The young female German Shepherd mix had been found on the streets with such a severe case of mange that she was hairless.  During surgery for the handsome, four-year old Doberman, an unusual discovery was made - a testicle inside his intestines.

TAMARINDOS
LOS TAMARINDOS - A quiet neighborhood of Ixtapa named after its many tamarind trees.  A 45-minute drive northeast, one makes the turn fatthe road to San Sebastían, driving past the large prison and turning right at the tamarinds, easily recognized by their pod-like fruit.  The pulp is edible and also used for traditional medicine and metal polish.  Its leaves are used in Indian cuisine.  The clinic took place an empty building next to the sports field.
