LA CHAPARRITA

SEMANA SANTA (HOLY WEEK):  The date is determined by an astronomical event. It begins every year on the first Sunday following the first full moon of spring.  This year,   Holy Week began on April 14th, Palm Sunday.  Workers in México are given the four days off preceding Easter Sunday and schools are on vacation for two weeks.
DURMIENDO LA NOCHE - PLAYA ROSITA - SEMANA SANTA
Semana Pascua begins on Easter Sunday, and although workers have returned to their jobs, beach and river locations in the area of Puerto Vallarta are filled with celebrants for another week.  Extra food stands are still set up, as well as tents, towels and flattened cardboard boxes on beaches for overnighting.  Although there are trash receptacles in close proximity to the sandy beaches, trash is often left where picnics and drinking took place.  From the beaches and rivers, styrofoam and plastic find their way to the bay and out into the Pacific, where some of it will be ingested by marine animals.

PLAYA CONCHAS CHINAS - SEMANA SANTA
To escape the crowds, we drove to Litibu beach in Nayarit, about an hour and fifteen minutes north.  With the exception of a few couples walking on the long, sandy beach and three horsemen exercising their beautiful, long-maned and long-tailed horses, we were the only ones there.  Waves were gently rolling towards shore and the water was a pleasant temperature, very clear and filled with small fish.

LITIBU

TALPA: A place of pilgrimages.  Approximately a three-hour drive from Vallarta, one climbs the foothills of the Sierra Madres,  passing the turn for San Sebastián and then descends the narrow, winding road into a green valley, whose hills are covered with pine trees.  This is ranch country,  and horses and dogs are in abundance.   Mascota is the first real town, and best known for its beautiful, unfinished 19th century "Templo Inconcluso de la Preciosa Sangre."
TALPA
Driving twenty minutes further east is Talpa.  Founded in 1599 by conquering Spaniards, Talpa was formerly a silver mining town.
Today, it is best known as the home for the "Virgin Rosario de Talpa," a small statue housed in the basilica of Nuestra Señora del Rosario.  Affectionately called "La Chaparrita ("The Little Short One"), there are four pilgrimages annually to see the Virgin of Talpa, as she is said to have healing powers.

Photos of the clinic in Talpa were taken by volunteers.  I was unfortunately unable to attend because of family visiting for Easter.

Laura Chavez-Halberg organized this clinic and secured the extra costs (6,000 pesos) for gasoline and driving time
for an out-of-town clinic.  The ayutamiento of talpa and the mayor, Martin Eduardo Guzman, helped support this effort to reduce the suffering of cats and dogs.

Sterilizations at clinic in Talpa- April 24-27:  female cats - 6; male cats 1- ; female dogs - 49 ; male dogs - 15  TOTAL: 71
CLÍNICA EN TALPA
PLUS pregnancies terminated for 1 cat with 3 fetuses and 1 dog with 10 fetuses

In spite of flyers and advance publicity, the response was lower than anticipated and hoped for.  Nevertheless, the number of sterilizations will have serious impact on the unwanted pet population in Talpa.

PALMS, DOLPHINS AND A RIVER

PALMAS - EL DOMINGO ANTES DE PASCUA - LA IGLEASIA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE GUADALUPE
The ringing of church bells began in the early morning on Palm Sunday.  Churches were bedecked inside and out with palms, and on steps and sidewalks outside the churches, a large variety of decorative woven palms were being sold.

The Sunday before was our normal panga excursion from Boca de Tomatlán.
BAHÍA DE BANDERAS - AVES Y DELFINES COMIENDO CAMARONES
Observing a large flock of seabirds after an hour of navigating towards the Marietas islands, captain Daniel approached and idled the engine. In the water were large numbers of tiny orange shrimp.  Devouring them were terns and boobies and a mega pod of dolphins.  Curious, some of the dolphins swam next to and under the panga.  Because they continued to stay near us, we slid into the water,  where could hear their squeaks and clicks and know we were being beamed by dolphins.

BOCA DE TOMATLAN:

This small village has been the site this last week for a peaceful protest
against plans to dam the Horcones ("Forks") river and build a hydroelectric plant for a real estate development.  This is the beautiful river that wends its way down 6,000 feet from the Sierras, runs through the beautiful Botanical Gardens and empties into Boca.  For an excellent report written for Banderas News:  http://www.banderasnews.com/1902/nb-vallarta-rio-horcones-canyon-endangered.htm
RÍO HORCONES

RÍO HORCONES - JARDÍNES BOTÁNICOS DE PUERTO VALLARTA

SAN JOSÉ DEL VALLE, NAYARIT:  This is a ranch and agricultural valley with three towns named after saints.  After driving north and turning east at Mezcales, the first town is San Vicente, followed by San Jose del Valle (created from six large haciendas) and then San Juan de Abajo.  PEACEAnimals visits these areas regularly due to the enormous need for spay/neuter.

The drive from Vallarta, depending on which saint one is visiting, takes 45-60 minutes.  There was a long line of pet owners waiting with their cats and dogs when I arrived at 8 AM on Wednesday, March 27th.  The location was at the end of a very long driveway next to a private home.  A tent had been set up to provide shade.  A very pleasant, middle-age woman with long, loose black hair and dark red lipstick brought in five, two-month old abandoned kittens and four homeless cats.  She hopes to find homes for all of them, as her neighbors are poisoning cats.
