SUMMER! ¡VERANO!

HOT!  Temperatures in the low 90´s with humidity at 81%.  The drizzles of rain are slowly turning the jungled hillsides green, but still no big showers.  Days alternate between grey and blue skies. A real rainfall on Saturday morning broke the week´s heat and humidity.

To cool off, my husband and I go south with our two dogs from Boca de Tomatlán to a quiet village on a long, white sandy beach. Depending on whose panga it is,  price for a ride ranges from free to 25 pesos per dog.  It is always 50 pesos per person.  Our dogs love to trot through the palm forest, where slender, sinewy young men climb shirtless to the tops of the high coco palms.
LOWERING  COCONUTS TO THE GROUND BELOW.  BAJANDO COCOS HASTA EL SUELO ABAJO.
Hacking off the green fruit, large, stiff fronds fall to the soft earth while coconuts are tied to a rope and swifly lowered down to a friend waiting below.

Arriving at the quiet beach,  dogs and I sit down immediately in the clear, shallow water of the bay, watching horses gallops through the still dry arroyo.

SOMETHING COOL - SUMMER TEA at CHOCO MUSEO -
TERCER PISO DEL CHOCO MUSEO - THIRD FLOOR OF CHOCO MUSEO
A cool, new spot is on the third floor of the new Choco Museo, around the corner from Banorte and across from the malecón.
Great views,  AC (or sit outside on a balcony), Wi-Fi, and most importantly, delicious quiche, sweets and non-alcoholic drinks.

On Thursday, the second longest day of the year, friends and I enjoyed mango and strawberry iced teas, cacao iced tea and chocolate frappés,  accompanied by wonderful pastries. Owners of the new chocolate store/tea room/museum are a charming French couple, Marie- Hélene and Jens Collette.

RETURN VISIT TO PASO ANCHO

The short, tan man wearing a white undershirt and grey shorts was missing all his front teeth.  He stepped out of his very humble cement one-story home close to the river to tell me "someone had thrown some liquid" into the dog´s encrusted face.  It was the dog I had been looking for, and she was standing behind a short bush next to his house.

When we had the clinic colonia Buenos Aires several weeks ago,  I had driven up the river to look for dogs.  I brought back nine, including a homeless brown female Pit Bull mix and her homeless black Lab-mix male companion. After being spayed and neutered, I returned the two dogs to the dirt road where I had found them sitting in front of a little market.  A friend told me a week later that she had seen the brown dog, and that it had looked as if there had been mucous coming out of its nose.  I  began looking for her.
"JUANITA" TIENE 11 MESES Y ESTÁ ESTERILIZADA Y VACUNADA.  TIENE HORRIBLE INFECCIÓN BACTERIAL DEL PIEL QUE SE VA A CURAR EN 3 SEMANAS.  ELLA´ESTÁ EN ADOPCIÓN.

June 21st, the first day of summer, was the day I saw the thin, sad-looking brown dog. With food and coaxing, I was able to take her immediately to our vet, Dr. Juan Tamayo, who diagnosed a severe bacterial skin infection, kennel cough and conjunctivitis.  After being vaccinated for distemper and receiving an injection for ticks and fleas, I brought "Juanita" (named after Dr. Tamayo) home with a supply of meds for 21 days of treatments.  She is small/medium (18 kilos), sweet, quiet and will make a very good and grateful companion.   Contact me, please, if you can foster or would like to adopt her.

DR. JUAN TAMAYO WITH ASSISTANT AND "JUANITA" - 11 MESES DE EDAD Y PESA 18 KILOS.  OPERADA Y VACUNADA.
The secretary of health reported to Dr. Poli that in 2016 there were appximately 70,000 homeless cats and dogs in Puerto Vallarta, 60% of which are dogs=42,000.  The radio of male pups to female pups born is 50-50.   Half of the homeless female dogs in 2016 totaled 21,000.   If they had all produced one litter with an average number of five,  105,000 puppies could have been born. With two litters annually, that number would have doubled.

PEACEAnimals sterilized 5,403 cats and dogs in 2016.  Half of these animals were dogs=2,700.   Per accepted statistics, half of these dogs were female dogs=1,350.  Using the guidelines of two litters with an average of five puppies per litter,  and without factoring in terminated pregnancies,  PEACEAnimals prevented the birth of 13,500 puppies in Puerto Vallarta in 2016.  Cut number if half if only one litter per female dog in 2016.

For cats, based on numbers in the above pyramid, with 1,350 female cats sterilized,  PEACEAnimals prevented the birth of 7,860 kittens in 2016.

FREE CLINICS ARE CRITICAL.  MEXICO IS RANKED NUMBER ONE IN THE WORLD FOR OVERPOPULATION OF CATS AND DOGS.

PLEASE SUPPORT PEACEANIMALS.

RESCUED AND ADOPTED: Friends called to report an abandoned puppy in the romantic zone. I picked up the very pretty, 10-week old Border Collie/Lab mix and took her to Dr. Tamayo´s for tests and vaccines.  With the exception of skin infections due to flea bites, she was 100% healthy.  She was probably discarded because the owner couldn´t afford to take her to a vet.
PROBABLAMENTE POR UNA INFECCION DE LA PIEL, FUE ABANDONADA.
Although I was prepared to foster her, Brischa Borchgrevink (PEACEAnimals advisory board member and owner with her husband Ted of LADRA, boarding facility/dog rescue) advised that Chris Holloway and his family, visiting from England, had seen the puppy on the sidewalk and wanted to adopt her.  The family had met Brischa and her husband Ted on a previous visit and got in touch via FB.  The Borchgrevinks will foster this very lucky puppy until August, when she accompanies a LADRA volunteer on a flight back to England.

ABANDONADA, RESCATADA, ADOPTADA Y VA A VOLER A LONDRES EN AGOSTO CON UNA VOLUNTARIA DE LADRA.
