HURRICANE PATRICIA

CHAMELA

Although Puerto Vallarta had completely hunkered down in preparation for the mega-hurricane Patricia, she never arrived here on Friday, October 23rd.   Instead, Patricia visited the very small and very poor communities approximately three hours south of Vallarta.  Impoverished inhabitants lost most of their meager possessions.  Many people lost everything, including their homes. Communities comprised of 50 or 60 families were left for days without food, water, electricity and the roofs of their humble houses.  Always poor, these people are now poorer.
CHAMELA
Tragedies, more than joyful occasions, seem to bind humanity together in the most noble and generous ways.   Goodness shines.   HSI responded immediately to the needs of the animals in the affected areas.
DONACIÓNES PARA LAS VÍCTIMAS DEL HURICÁN PATRICIA
Several organizations and individuals solicited donations of food, clothing and everything else a human or animal would need.  These items have been delivered in trucks and cars and will continue to be delivered for as long as it is deemed necessary.
Thank you to the following friends who so generously delivered the many boxes and bags of important supplies to my home this week:
Shannon Beston; Kathryn Garcia; Buri Grey; Larry Loyd and Nick Walker; Maca MacMarran; Heidi Padilla; and Ralph Osborne
Everything was driven down on Saturday to the areas in la Huerta (three hours south) most seriously affected by Patricia.  Thank you to Gaby Vaca for getting the supplies to the people who are in such desperate need.

I hesitated about driving to the clinic in San Vicente Thursday morning.  The AC in our car had gone out on Tuesday, couldn´t be fixed until Friday,  and I knew it would be a hot, 45-minute drive. But it was only a brief hesitation before heading north to Mezcales, the beach town in Nayarit about 10 minutes before Bucerias.  From there, one heads directly east, which is the beginning of the Valle de Banderas.  The area is full of ranches and full of saints.
The first saint is San Juan de Abajo,  the next one is San Vicente, and other pueblos named after other saints follow.  These are quiet, clean little towns - all with bandstands in a central plaza that faces a church. In the plaza, which is surrounded by food stands, small shops, and a small bazaar selling used western-style clothing, school children and adults were setting up "altars" for the celebration of " El Día de los Muertos" ("Day of the Dead").  Dating back centuries to Aztec rituals,  this day was originally observed at the beginning of summer.   The Day of the Dead was a day dedicated to remembering and honoring the dead, and supporting them on their spiritual journey.   After the arrival of the Spaniards in the 16th century, the time of year to observe el Dia de los Muertos was changed to October 31, November 1 and November 2, coinciding with the western celebrations of Allhallowtide (now Halloween), All Saints´ Eve, All Saints´ Day and All Souls´ Day.

The clinic in San Vicente, in the very nearby state of Nayarit,  took place in the salón de ejidos, a large empty, partially paved lot across from the plaza.  I was told by a volunteer that people with their pets had been lined up since 6:30 in the morning for the 9 AM start time.  Those who arrived later in the morning had to be turned away until Friday.  The same volunteer had brought in an utterly filthy, matted-haired, small Terrier for neutering.  She hoped to be able to take him him for a bath and a haircut.  If that is manged, this dog will look like a movie star.  He was so sweet and so friendly and one always wonders why these pets get thrown away.

No clinic took place on Saturday, as the ayutamiento needed the space PEACEAnimals had been given for this clinic.

Thank you to Sue Solorzano for organizing this event and thank you to Debra Brown from Canada, who paid the 3,000 pesos extra costs for driving time and gasoline for the vet team.

STERILIZATIONS AT SAN SEBASTIÁN/ SANTIAGO DE LOS PINOS CLINICS -  OCTOBER 21-24:  Male dogs:  10;  Female dogs:  33;
Male cats:  1; Female cats:  20  TOTAL:  64
SAN SEBASTIÁN DEL OESTE

Several factors conspired to make these numbers lower than our average of more than 100 animals per surgery week.  This was a first-time clinic in remote locations with small populations; a long tradition of non-sterilization owing both to a strong Catholic identity and the need for ranch dogs;  weather alert for Hurricane Patricia on Friday and the ensuing rains.  Note the large disparity between numbers of female versus male surgeries.

SAN SEBASTIÁN/SANTIAGO DE LOS PINOS

LA PLAZA DE SAN SEBASTIÁN DEL OESTE

San Sebastián del Oeste - From Wikipedia:

"San Sebastián was founded as a mining town in 1605, during the early Spanish colonial Viceroyalty of New Spain period. Gold, silver and lead were mined in the area. More than 25 mines and a number of foundries were established by 1785. The town was formally established as a city in 1812."
COMO MEDIA HORA DE SAN SEBASTIÁN Y DONDE NOS PARAMOS PARA ALMORZAR REGRESANDO
Today, The picturesque pueblo San Sebastián looks like a movie set for an old-style western.  It is always clean and currently is pleasantly cool, with daytime temperatures in the mid-60´s.
LLEGANDO A SAN SEBASTIÁN

Sitting outdoors at night at the plaza, one hears the clippity-clop of the hooves of horses and then sees a ranchero returning home in his straw hat, sometimes with a rope hitched on to another horse carrying a couple of small children.  At night, for the entire month of October, trumpeters playing music for rosarios walk through the quiet streets, followed by the towns people. Simple and beautiful and serene.

Originally scheduled by the presidencia of San Sebastián for the Casa de Cultura, the location for the clinics was changed last minute to the auditorium.  There was nothing in it other than a cement stage and three workmen applying cement to the far wall.  Twenty-three cats and dogs were sterilized on Wednesday, but the vet team had had time to do more.

UNA COCKER DEMASIADO ENFERMA PARA ESTERILIZAR
Wednesday and Thursday mornings,  I did what I used to do in Vallarta – walk and drive around a village or neighborhood asking if people would like their pets spayed and neutered for free, plus treated for ticks, fleas, parasites and mange. I collected a female cat at a small grocery store and a sweet, reddish- brown Cocker mama and her two black and white puppies from a muddy yard.  The owner of the dogs, a  tanned man with a broken tooth in a sweat-soaked cotton turquoise shirt said he wanted to breed the female German Shepherd that was living in a bird aviary.   Sadly, at the clinic the Cocker mama couldn´t be spayed as she had bloody diarrhea.  The vets gave her a shot of antibiotics and said she might have parvo and therefore a 50% chance of surviving.
SALIENDO DE LA CLÍNICA  DESPUÉS DE CIRUGÍA IN S.S.  NO QUERIÁ OPERAR A LA HERMANA DE SU PERRO.  OWNER LEAVING AFTER HIS FEMALE DOG WAS SPAYED.  DIDN´T WANT HER BROTHER NEUTERED.

I scooped up an adorable little blonde female Terrier mix on the street a block from the clinic.  Neighbors said she was homeless and that I should take her.  Hours later her owner came looking for the dog and was fortunately happy that her pet had been spayed.  The handsome silversmith from Guadalajara told me he would love to spay his female dog, but that he kept her at home because he was so afraid of her being poisoned in town.  He gave me a very large bag of unripe avocados, saying they would be eaten by squirrels if I didn´t take them.
VISTA DE UN RESTAURANTE EN LA PLAZA DE SAN SEBASTIÁN

A woman living in a long rectangular cement house where dogs were playing said the young, tan male dog with them was homeless.   She said none of the dogs were hers and that she “hated animals.”  The tan dog approached me with a wagging tail and what looked like a smile, as his lips were pulled back over his teeth in an amusing grin.
SAUL REGISTRANDO MASCOTA EN S.S.
We loaded him and two Black Labs and a Chihuahua belonging to the owners of la Quinta coffee factory into the truck and took them to the clinic.  That evening walking back to the home where we were staying, I heard the loud howling of a puppy.  The sounds were coming from the back of the house of the woman who "hated animals.I walked to the back part of the property and saw a grey puppy with long, floppy ears in a muddy pen surrounded by chickens.  There was the sound of mewing young kittens nearby.

MUCHACHA
INDECISIOSA CON SU PERRO TRANQUILIZADO
A policeman in a navy blue uniform strode purposefully into the auditorium to collect “Puma,” a blonde, tan Terrier-Doxie mix.  His wife had given us permission to neuter their dog, but her husband was against it, and Puma left intact.
CACHORROS HUSKY EN VENTA EN LA CALLE DE SAN SEBASTÍAN. SE QUEDARON TODO EL DÍA EN ESTA HAULA.  HUSKIES FOR SALE KEPT ALL DAY LIKE THIS IN SAN SEBASTIÁN.

A pretty teen-age girl, encouraged by her friends who called out “take him, take him,” brought her male German Shepherd after much hesitation and cried as she left him behind for surgery.

VINO DE LA ESTANCIA CON SUS MASCOTA

Although a volunteer went to the pueblo of la Estancia on Wednesday and got a count of sixteen dogs to pick up Thursday morning.  The volunteer arrived at 8:30 AM at la Estancia , but only one owner was there with his dog.  A tall, polite ranchero did drive in from la Estancia with his attractive wife and two very pretty teen-age daughters to have their little blond female Terrier spayed.  A good looking retired airline employee from Mascota drove 45 minutes to have our vets spay his German Shepherd.  The man had had a bad experience with a vet where he lives, and our vets came highly recommended.

AVISO EN EL PUEBLO DE SANTIAGO DE LOS PINOS -NOTICE IN SANTIAGO REGARDING THE NEAR EXTINCTION OF THE JAGUAR.
As there were only sixteen surgeries on Thursday, with the approval of the clinic sponsors,  Sharon Tognietti and her husband Martin Weber,  the vet team drove to Santiago de los Pinos on Thursday afternoon to set up for clinics there on Friday and Saturday.  The 30-minute winding, green drive there Friday morning was very beautiful.
MAIZ EN LAS COLINAS MUY INCLINADAS FUERA DE SANTIAGO DE LOS PINOS
I had never before seen very steep, high hills covered in corn.  This is difficult work in the planting and harvesting.
SANTIAGO DE LOS PINOS - 30 MINUTES EN COCHE DE SAN SEBASTIÁN
Like San Sebastián, Santiago has a stream running through it.  It also has many pine trees, only one restaurant, which has long communal tables, one small convenience store,  lots of rancheros and lots of dogs.  At the “Panadería” (“bakery”) restaurant, I asked if anyone would like a dog or cat fixed.  NO.  A road worker from Guadalajara sitting next to me said that ranchers feel if they sterilize their dogs, the dogs will get lazy and refuse to work.

SANTIAGO DE LOS PINOS

The population of San Sebastián is five-hundred persons.   Santiago de los Pinos has a population of one thousand.  The most prevalent responses from women and men in both places regarding free clinics were "Why?  He is a male."  Or "No, I want her (or him) to have babies."
UNA HEMBRA QUE HABÍA DADO LA LUZ HACE UN MES - AFUERA DE LA PANADERÍA EN SANTIAGO DE LOS PINOS.  FEMALE DOG THAT HAD GIVEN BIRTH 4 WEEKS AGO OUTSIDE THE PANADERÍA IN SANTIAGO.
Considering these are ranch areas with small populations that have never been exposed to a spay/neuter campaign, we are all glad for what was accomplished.  Next year will be better.

LOS TRAJE A LA CLÍNICA EN SANTIAGO PERO COMO FUERON MACHOS, EL PAPÁ VINO PARA ELLOS ANTES DE SU CIRUGÍA Y LOS REGRESO A CASA.  PERO LO BUENO ES QUE REGRESÓ PARA ESTERILIZAR A LAS HEMBRAS.  THE FATHER RETRIEVED THE PUPPIES BEFORE THEY WERE FIXED IN SANTIAGO, BUT RETURNED WITH HIS FEMALE DOGS FOR SPAYING.

THANK YOU to board members Sharon Tognietti and her husband Martin Weber for sponsoring this clinic, for letting us stay in their wonderful home, for putting up posters and for asking the village priest to make announcements for the clinic; to Margarita, owner of el Fortin for treating the team to lunch on Wednesday; to Coco and Walter, owners of Monte Bello

ARBOL VIEJO EN LA ENRADA DE SAN SEBASTIÁN EN UN DÍA NUBLADO.

As my husband and I got back into our car to drive back to Vallarta about noon, Dr. Anthony called out that there was a “category 5” hurricane heading towards town.   Sitting high up on a hill next to the road having lunch, we saw truck after truck loaded with army personnel heading west.   Driving towards town, almost all the cars were headed away from Vallarta.  Passing the airport, no planes in sight.   No traffic.  In town, nothing open.   Glass windows taped or boarded up and all doors closed to everything.  We looked at the news - "biggest tropical storm ever recorded," and began battening and hunkering down, expecting at the minimum, 70 mile an hour winds.  We moved to the downstairs bedroom where the windows are shuttered and have no glass,  and left the door open for the animals to join us.  In the middle of the night I reached over for my husband, but instead of finding Ned, who had quietly moved back to the upstairs bedroom for the AC, I was lying next to Buster, our 90- pound,  slightly addled and very loving Pit Bull/Labrador.  It was his first time on a bed and Buster was a very happy dog.  It was a night of light rain and no wind at all.  Having never experienced a hurricane, I admit to having missed the excitement of gale winds.  We are now on daylight savings time and it is a beautiful week-end in paradise.
