FIRST SUMMER RAIN

PLAYA LOS MUERTOS - NUESTROS TRES PERROS RESCATADOS - OUR THREE RESCUE DOGS

I often walk our dogs early in the mornings and evenings south on the malecón to the pedestrian bridge that leads to the western tip of the isla Cuale.  The beach next to the bridge used to be filled with rubbish, but lately it has been very clean.   A few enterprising individuals have gotten permission to set up white tablecloth-covered tables where they sell oysters and non-alcoholic drinks. The river, just before it empties into the bay, is filled now with splashing children and their families who prefer to escape the heat here rather than in the bay.  Unfortunately, some of these happy vacationers are leaving their trash behind, which is easier that taking it up to the malecón, where there are trash cans. This is not a "blue beach," which means dogs are allowed off leash and the government does not do any cleaning.

The first rain of the summer arrived on Tuesday night, June 14th, accompanied by the electronic buzz of cicadas, signalling the beginning of their mating season and the summer rains.  Several rains followed, some accompanied by thrilling lightning and window-rattling thunderstorms.
EL MALECÓN
DESPUÉS DE LA LLUVIA
The cicadas, who have lived underground as nymphs for 14-17 years, living off the juice of roots, provide food for birds and also for some humans.  I have read that two billion people eat insects, including the prune-size cicada.   If you would like to get it a try:  http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2013/04/130515-cicadas-recipes-food-cooking-bugs-nation-animals/

EL PITILLAL -  The clinic was in the same bodega as it was a few weeks ago. Wednesday, the first day of our clinic week, is usually the slowest day.  On Wednesday, forty-four cats and dogs had been registered.  Eduardo, a ten-year old student at the Emiliano Zapata school where Leslie presented on Tuesday morning, arrived with his dog and received the great PEACEAnimals t-shirt. His mother Monica was a volunteer all day at the clinic.  Before I left the clinic, I went across the street to buy a large packet of fresh corn tortillas for the vet team.  When I asked the pretty, young woman working there if she had a pet that needed sterilizing, she gave me a big smile and proudly showed me a photo on her phone of her dog that had given birth to four puppies that morning.

BUCERIAS, NAYARIT - A pretty beach town about a 40-minute drive between  Puerto Vallarta and Sayulita.   There are lovely homes, condos, nice restaurants, small hotels and shops on the west side of the highway and pockets of poverty on the east side.  The presence of northerners, whether tourists, part-time or full-time residents,  is always visible near the long, powdery beach.
