GRINGO GULCH

CUAHTEMOC NEIGHBOR WITH BENEDICTE LAUR´S RESCUE DOG (photo credit:  Miles Merritt)

The area in colonia Centro called Gringo Gulch was apparently given this name in 1963 when Tennessee William´s play, “Night of the Iguana” was being filmed.  Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton bought two houses on calle Cuauhtemoc and built an arched pink Venetian-style bridge joining the two residences as a way to avoid the paparazzi.  The bridge is still there and the houses are currently being converted into a hotel and restaurant.

BENEDICTE LAUR AND DR.POLI

This week´s clinic took place in the garage belonging to Benedicte Laur,  a vivacious young French woman who recently purchased a beautiful home a few doors away from the famous pink bridge landmark.  Benedicte, who owns five rescue cats and a rescue dog (by
KITTENS BORN IN GARAGE
Paulina),  is a frequent volunteer at the clinics and very generously underwrote this one. Benedicte has one rescue dog and five rescue cats.  She said she was "donating this clinic to all the street cats."

Calle Cuauhtemoc, perched above the río Cuale, is narrow, winding and cobbled.  The charming street with views of the jungle and the river, is lined with very pretty homes as well as some humbles ones belonging to the long-term, non-gringo residents.  Cuauhtemoc ("Landing Eagle¨") has dozens of homeless cats that give birth in garages, nearby restaurants and empty spaces.   Cat lovers feed them.

WOUNDED AND ADOPTED BLACK CAT AT CLINIC

At the clinic on Wednesday, one of the tame street cats was brought in.  She was a black cat and Paulina said she smelled like a dead animal, the result of infected wounds.  Much of her body was shaved, as hair helps the spread of infection.  The sad  cat was covered with dog bite scars and and fresh dog bites.  After being spayed and treated for fleas, parasites and with  antibiotics, Paulina took the cat home with her.

As we had room for more pets on our first day, I drove down Cuauhtemoc to the very nearby colonia Caloso.   After parking my car,  I knocked on the metal door of a small, one-story cinder block house.  The door was opened by an attractive, plumpish woman wearing a smile, bright red lipstick, black eyeliner and a floral sundress.  She said she had just found a kitten and invited me inside.
ANESTHETIZED AND EYES LUBRATED PRE-SURGERY AT GRINGO GULCH CLINIC (photo credit:  Miles Merritt)
In the middle of a filthy room cluttered with trash and dirty clothing was a very small  tuxedo kitten with a chunk of flesh missing from its back.
I put the female kitten in my kennel and was crossing the street when I saw a young teen-age boy walking with two medium-size female dogs.   He said they had both given birth to litters three months ago.  The kitten, the boy and his two dogs and I drove back to the clinic.  Paulina told me at the end of the day that both dogs had already been spayed and that it was impossible that they had had given birth that recently.

"SPIRIT" BEING EXAMINED AT DR. PEÑA´S CLINIC

WHERE "SPIRIT" WAS FOUND
"Spirit" is the name of the broken dog picked up in colonia el Progreso (east of Pitillal) by PEACEAnimals board member,  Brischa Borchgrevink.  Neighbors who had been giving the dog food and water said he had been lying there for four days.    Brischa said that he was so filthy that he "smelled as if he were already dead." She picked the dog up in a blanket and took him to Dr. Peña´s clinic, where he was diagnosed with TVT, erlichia, a broken leg and tail and an eye infection.  Because the dog exhibited  a very strong will to live, the decision was made to try to save him.  After being bathed, Brischa said the dog looked like a Cocker mix and is very, very sweet.  Donations are needed for Spirit´s vet care.

SPRING! ¡PRIMAVERA!

EXUBERANT YELLOW BLOSSOMS ON THE PRIMAVERA ("SPRING") TREE

The vernal equinox took place on March 20, marking the first day of spring.   “Equinox,” a word I hope to be able to play one day in Scrabble,  means the “time or date when the sun crosses the celestial equator.”  The tilt of the earth´s axis is neither inclined towards nor away from the sun, making the hours of the day and the night equal in time.  Daylight hours will now get longer until the third week of September, when the autumnal equinox occurs.

It seemed fitting,  though it wasn´t quite yet spring, to be driving to Rancho Primavera in el Tuito this week to deliver Bella to her new home.  After finding the beautiful year-old Weimaraner and after Matt Messner and Neil Sechan fostered and fattened her up for two weeks, we all wanted to see where Bella would be living.

I wasn´t prepared for so much beauty...  two hundred acres of meadows, streams, orchards, papaya, mango and banana trees,  blooming plants and vines, riding and walking trails in all directions,  and a small lake with a boat. Twenty horses roam free and follow one around for pats and nuzzles. A small green parrot flew onto my shoulder and stayed there for half-an-hour while I wandered along trails with Bella.  Shy with the six other rescue dogs who followed, Bella loped gracefully over green fields, jumped up on dark boulders, surprised when she stepped into a pond, ran fast circles around me when I sat down and rolled blissfully on her back in the grass.  After living hungry and homeless on dusty streets, Bella is where she belongs.

PETS FOR LIFE is the vet team PEACEAnimals employs for its free mobile spay/neuter clinics.  PFL has its own separate business and plans to secure approximately 19 funded clinics a year in the states of Nayarit and Oaxaca.  PEACEAnimals clinics will now only need to find funding for approximately 30 clinics annually, almost exclusively in the area of Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco.

CATHEDRAL IN TEPIC

This week PFL was in city of Tepic and the town of San Blás in the state of Nayarit.   Located on the banks of the Mololoa and Tepic rivers, Tepic is the capital and largest city in Nayarit.  The vet team always complains of the abundance of mosquitoes there.  San Blás is a small port town and tourist destination.  As in almost all parts of Mexico, there is an extreme overpopulation of pets in  both places.
