NIGHT RAINS

LAS ÁNIMAS
Sailing back to Puerto Vallarta after a a dazzling blue swim and picnic day, we could see the church of Our Lady of Guadalupe nestled beneath the "V" in the foothills of the Sierra Madres is the center of town.    As we passed this spot, my good friend Gabriela Garcia told me that the area beyond the foothills has always been called "the cloud factory."

RETURNING TO THE MARINA IN VALLARTA - REGRESANDO A LA MARINA

As if on celestial schedule, big rains, almost always accompanied by winds and thrilling thunder and lightning, have been arriving at night on a very regular basis.  They break the heat and humidity, giving Vallarta a feeling of freshness in the mornings.  Also arriving are toads, which are their most active in hot, humid months.  Our inclined street is below an arroyo, and when it rains, water plunges down over a stair system to the cobbled, grass-tufted street below and after a few blocks,  into the bay.
VENENOSO SAPO - HAY MUCHOS EN EL TIEMPO DE HUMEDAD Y CALOR - Y PELIGROSOS PARA PERROS.
This week, I found an enormous lumpy,  brown toad in one of the dog´s food dishes, which was completely filled with rain water from the night before.  It sat very still in the water, and with its blinking yellow eyes,  the toad looked perfect for a horror film.  More toads continue to arrive and without touching them, are caught and taken to the arroyo.  Some toads are highly poisonous, the biggest danger being to dogs, who either lick them, eat them, or simply drink from the water dish where the frog has been.

In front of the church of Our Lady of Guadalupe is EL CAMPANARIO, a good place for lunch.  It´s the only restaurant I´ve been to in town that provide straws, the world´s number number one plastic contaminant, unless asked.  Wednesdays are my favorite days because soup of the day is  tortilla soup ("sopa azteca").  The entree, and there is a nice selection,  is accompanied by small servings of salade, rice, beans and tortillas,  plus a fresh fruit drink and custard dessert.  Price:  65 pesos.

A few blocks north is RO´WO, a wonderful new shop that opened a month ago.  For sale: art, handicrafts, accessories, textiles and some furniture. Almost everything is from Chiapas, the southernmost state in México,  and its next-door neighbor, Guatemala.  If you´re not currently in town, you might want to make a note to visit when you are:  Hidalgo 424- Centro. Tel.   223-5476

Continuing north about ten blocks is HEALING HANDS - excellent for a very professional massage (300 pesos for an hour), mani/pedi, etc.  Address is 240 Pipila in centro, catty-corner from Pipi´s, the popular tourist restaurant.  Phone for massage, etc. appointment:  222-8441

RO´WO GALERIA - NUEVA HERMOSA TIENDA EN CENTRO VALLARTA - TEL.  223-5476

Because the foothills of the Sierra Madres to the east of Puerto Vallarta delay sunrise,  skies are still dark at seven in the morning.  I´ve been taking our dogs to the beach at Conchas Chinas at this time, hoping to see dolphins at dawn.  Our gardener swears he sees them regularly at 7:30 most mornings.  To date, I haven´t seen any, but the view of seemingly motionless pale pink, puffy clouds on the horizon at the beginning of sunrise and the long train of grey clouds clinging to the southern curve of the green, jungled hills above the bay is spectacular.

EN BUSCA DE DELFINES EN PLAYA CONCHAS CHINAS - CASI MADRUGADA - ALMOST DAWN

SEEING RED:  SEPTEMBER 1 is the annual international JAPAN DOLPHINS DAY, which begins the horrific capturing and slaughtering of hundreds of dolphins, and lasts until March.  Also killed in the dolphin drive will be porpoises and pilot whales.  This date is observed with peaceful protests in many parts of the world.  In Vallarta on a very hot afternoon (90 degrees farenheit with 70% humidity), protestors at the stoplight at Avenida México and Fluvial wore red, evocative of the cove in Taiji, which will soon be turned from blue to bright red from the blood of these intelligent and peaceful cetaceans.

MANIFESTACIÓN FRENTE DEL SEMÁFORO DE CALLES MÉXICO Y FLUVIAL

RELATED:  Good news:   The World Conservation Congress has passed with overwhelming support a motion denouncing the killing of whales under the guise of science.  Better news would be supporting a motion against all killing of cetaceans.

Shockingly, Norway kills more whales than Japan and Iceland combined.  Per Animal Welfare Alerts,  the Norwegian government is funding projects to promote domestic sales of whale products and the development of alternative commercial products derived from whales, including dietary supplements, medicines, and cosmetics. In 2015, the Myklebust Hvalprodukter company announced the launch of a series of new products derived from whale oil, including skin cream.

CALLE VERA CRUZ - LA FLORESTA  EL HOGAR FÚE UNA CASA VACÍA.  CLINIC TOOK PLACE IN AN EMPTY CEMENT HOUSE ON VERA CRUZ STREET.

LA FLORESTA - Is an inland colonia driving northeast for approximately 25 minutes, passing through Pitillal. The first thing I saw driving up the cobbled street was a tired looking brown Pit Bull mix whose teats indicated that she had given birth to more than one litter.  I followed her into a large, muddy yard with ducks, chickens, kittens and cats and more dogs.  A thin, older woman with a wrinkled and tanned face said the only dog she wanted sterilized was the dog I had followed.  She didn´t want to have the kittens sterilized, because she "loved kittens and wanted to keep having more kittens born."  I explained that there were hundreds of kittens already born and in refuges and homes that needed adopting.  The woman relented, but didn´t want the adult cats or other dogs spayed and neutered.   There were a lot of Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes living on calle Vera Cruz, and none of the owners I spoke with wanted them sterilized.  Other Pit Bulls did arrive to be spayed and neutered.  At the Centro de Acopio, there are 21 Pit Bulls waiting for adoption out of a total of 55 dogs.   293-3690 if interested in adopting a wonderful dog or cat.

HABÍAN MUCHOS PIT BULLS EN LA CALLE VERA CRUZ, PERO LOS DUEÑOS NO QUERÍAN ESTERILIZARLOS.
Frank Ohly, our regular two-day volunteer, arrived on his motorcycle with rescue kittens and puppy from Puro Gato.  Angelica of AngeliCAT smiled when she said she had brought us six "presents" - kittens for surgery.
