INCUBATION NURSERY

VIVERO DE INCUBACIÓN:  At the northern end of the malecón on the beach next to a busy open-air restaurant and the adjacent, good fish market, is an "incubation nursery." Inside this oversize cage-like, locked "corral" are a few thousand Olive Ridley ("Tortuga Golfina") turtle eggs.  The original sandy nests on beaches north and south of this location were reported to 911, attention "green patrol" ("patrulla verde"). Nests are dug up by authorized personnel as soon as possible after the female crawls slowly back into the bay.  The removal of eggs is to protect nests from humans and dogs. Eggs in each nest are carefully counted and transported to the nursery for reburying.

Above each nest is a white marker noting when eggs were laid, how many, and estimated date of hatching.  Average number of eggs per nest - 100.  Incubation period is approximately 6 weeks, at which time hatchlings will be released at dusk, reducing chances of being eaten by seabirds.  Fish learn to anticipate, so release location changes whenever possible. If you check birth days on the markers at the nursery, you might consider a visit on that date.

Turtle gender is determined after fertilization and dependent on temperature of incubation.  If turtle eggs incubate below 81.86, the hatchlings will be male. If above 87.8, hatchlings will be female. If temperatures fluctuate between those two temperatures, it should produce an almost even mix of sexes.  Ninety percent of hatchlings will not survive predators.  Only 1% of the sea turtles will reach sexual maturity.  Owing to the wonder of earth´s magnetic field, females will return to the place where they were hatched.  Males will never touch land again.

The Olive Ridley sea turtle is at risk for extinction.  Enemies are sharks, pollution, global warming,  and humans.  On our regular panga outings, we have seen several dead Olive Ridleys with deep gashes in their shells, all caused by boats.

RAIN!  After a mostly rain-free June, always the beginning of the rainy season, Vallarta has enjoyed five or six torrential rains in July,
accompanied by the always thrilling rumbling and booming of thunder and brilliant bursts of lightning.  The air is refreshed, temperatures are lower and the foothills of the Sierra Madres are green and glorious again.

LA FLORESTA ("The Forest") - A 25-minute drive southeast from centro to a quiet, cobbled neighborhood with several grassy, unkempt parks.  No forest.  The clinic took place in the very large bodega of Jurgen Payr, originally from Munich, Germany.  As the location is a bit hidden, it was difficult for several people to find.

After registering the first arrivals Wednesday morning, two volunteers and I drove around looking for cats and dogs,  with some success.  When we asked a young teen-age girl standing in the doorway of her home if she had a cat of a dog she would like to have sterilized for free, she replied that she didn´t own a cat or a dog, but she did have a duck.

CALLE EASY - CONCHAS CHINAS
EASY STREET (Calle Easy),  in lower Conchas Chinas,  a few miles south of town, is the cobbled road with a stone retaining wall.  The road curves down from the two-lane "highway" 200 and leads to a very pretty beach with sand castle-like rock formations and small coves.   During summer months, the main main part of Conchas Chinas beach is sprinkled with colorful, rented umbrellas.

Early mornings, when the sun is sending its first, soft light to earth, and late in the day when the sun begins to disappear, are perfect times for a swim. The beach is almost empty and the temperature of the water is a bit cooler than the 84 degrees at other hours.

There are been grey-clouded teases of rain in late afternoons.  Cicadas send their electric buzzes out into dark night and the air in our garden is dense with the fragrance of night blooming jasmine.
But it doesn´t rain.  Rains for June are more than 50% less than the amount of rain received in Puerto Vallarta last June.  Weather forecasts for July are upwards of 50% less rain than July 2018.  Water reserves are low and there is no more taking it for granted.

WATER:  If you live here, you are no doubt aware of the situation regarding the Horcones river.  This beautiful river forks down from the pine-topped Sierra Madres and empties into the fishing village of Boca de Tomatlán.  The plan made by an individual or business entity was to build a hydroelectric plant at the Horcones.
Dynamiting took place without legal permits, causing damage to the environment and killing scores of fish and shrimp.  Protests have been organized and two temporary stop work orders have been put in place.  There are rumors about who or what is in charge of this project, but no confirmation to date.  The great singer and songwriter, Lila Downs, has spoken out against damming the río Horcones.   http://aguaparatodos.org.mx/video-defensa-del-rio-los-horcones-puerto-vallarta-jalisco-mexico-por-lila-downs/

PEACEANIMALS ADVISORY BOARD:  Angela Kelleher,  tireless and enthusiastic volunteer from Canada, has been unanimously voted on to the advisory board.  She has been great at securing and organizing needed volunteers for the clinics and has agreed to be volunteer coordinator.  Angela is a three-quarter time resident of Puerto Vallarta.

ADORABLE YOUNG VOLUNTEER WHO PLANS TO BE A VET

IXTAPA is a busy municipality northeast of centro Vallarta, just off the 544 road to San Sebastián.  Approaching Ixtapa, one passes  a large prison on the right.  There are booths across the street from the prison that rent hats, purses and clothing so visitors can look their best.

VOLUNTARIAS- IXTAPA
PEACEAnimals has visited Ixtapa several times, always using the location in the empty government space across from the main plaza.  This time we were in a large cluster of small, cement houses.  In one of them, donated by the very gracious owner,  the vet team operated inside an empty downstairs room.  Volunteers, and there were several, monitored pets post surgery in the adjoining cement patio. On Wednesday, our first clinic day and with only two vets, 43 cats and dogs were sterilized.  This would not have been possible without the several volunteers who assisted.  Angela Kelleher played no small part in this very successful clinic.

LAS VARAS, NAYARIT is a 2-2.5 hour drive south from Vallarta.  Because of the distance, I didn´t attend this clinic.  The internet describes las Varas as a former  hacienda (estate) that became a pueblo in 1935.  It is as a small, traditional Mexican town with poverty, about 12 km from the popular beach resort of Chacala.

BILL ADOPTÓ UNA MEZCLA SALCHICHA DE 10 AÑOS EN EL ALBERGUE (ACOPIO) - CON DRA. NAYELI

My friend Bill Goodloe wanted to adopt an older dog that didn´t have much chance of finding a home.  At the Acopio/Albergue (no-kill city shelter), he chose "Sandy," a ten-year old female Doxie-mix.  She had arrived at the shelter with broken ribs after having been hit by a car. Sandy is now happily at home with "Corky," the small female dog Bill adopted at the Acopio/Albergue two years ago.

"Chapo" ("Shorty"),  a Pit Bull who had lived in a cage at the Acopio for four years, was recently adopted by César, who  renamed his new pet "Guapo" ("Handsome").    César, who volunteers at the Acopio almost daily, said Guapo was the first dog he had walked there, and changed apartments so he could give this great dog a home.

There are more than 60 dogs and a couple of dozen kittens and cats waiting for adoption at the Albergue (Acopio).  Approximately one-third of the dogs are Pit Bulls.  All dogs will have been vaccinated against parvo and distemper, tested for disease and sterilized before going to new homes.  Cats are tested for leukemia and AIDS and given the triplicate vaccine. Adoption fee for small dogs and cats is 263 pesos.  For dogs that weigh over 10 kilos - 473 pesos.
