SHELTERING IN GREEN

"THE GREEN BLANKET" COVERING THE FOOTHILLS OF THE SIERRA MADRES DURING RAINY SEASON
"LA MANTA VERDE" CUBRIENDO LAS COLINAS DURANTE EL TIEMPO DE LAS LLUVIAS - PUERTO VALLARTA
TOMATLÁN, CABO CORRIENTES is a small inland town about  two hours south of Puerto Vallarta.  Tomatlán, meaning "Tomato Land" or "Place of Tomatoes," has been described as a town "one doesn´t need to see."  Because of that and the distance, have never been.
DR. PACHECO - TOMATLÁN, CABO CORRIENTES
PEACEAnimals
visits Tomatlán twice a year, with clinics always taking place at the local community center. Locals, who are very appreciative, raise the required extra costs for driving time and gas  outside Vallarta.

COAPINOLE, a municipality of Puerto Vallarta, was founded in 1937 with an original ejido land endowment of 1,414 hectares that now include the municipality of Pitillal.

"Demonio Blanco" ("White Demon"), the area of Coapinole where the clinic took place, is named after a famous Mexican wrestler who founded a gym and arena in the neighborhood and put his name on them. They no longer exist, but Manuel Lopez Coronado, aka "The White Demon," lives with his family on the same street as Julie Bunker, who donated the use of her lovely lavender  home for this clinic.
COAPINOLE

sAt 8:30 AM on Wednesday, the clinic was full,  with pet owners still waiting in line.  Those turned away were registered as the first to be served Thursday morning.  Cats were much more in attendance than dogs, and although our guidelines specify dogs in kennels or on leashes and cats in kennels, boxes, bags, etc., several were simply carried to the clinic in the owner´s arms.  Risky.

SHELTERING IN GREEN
LA MANTA VERDE - FOOTHILLS OF THE SIERRA MADRES - PUERTO VALLARTA

"The green blanket" is what my friend Marlee calls the lush,
rain-fed growth of jungle covering the hills above Banderas Bay.  This wild beauty, with a few restaurants tucked away next to a river (there are seven flowing into the bay), is minutes away from town and seems very far away from a pandemic.
SHELTERING IN GREEN - BOCA DE TOMATLÁN

The water in the bay is now peridot green, utterly transparent and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Reflections of ripples in the water are mirrored on the sandy bottom below, resembling brightly lit, oversize spider webs.  Curious small fish swim around us, and we stay in the water for an hour at a time, sheltering in green.

AGUA MUY TRANSPARENTE,  COLOR PERIDOTE VERDE - PLAYA CONCHAS CHINAS

Early one dog walking morning on playa Rosita, a longboarder suddenly stopped paddling.  Large, large black triangular fins were swirling around him. Wing-like, pectoral fins of two enormous mantas gracefully and noisily slapped the water as they swam back and forth in front of the beach, feeding. Diet for mantas is zooplankton - fish eggs, crab larva, mollusk larvae, etc.. Alas, I was too excited to get a good photo.
TEMPRANO EN LA MAÑANA - PLAYA ROSITA - PUERTO VALLARTA

DOS HERMOSAS Y ENORMES MANTAS NADANDO CERCA DE LA ORILLA - PLAYA LA ROSITA

"Sheltering in," the request made by the local government, is not very difficult here.  Beaches, bay, ocean, rivers and jungle offer beauty and bliss. Many restaurants have stayed open and many are open-air.  Gyms have reopened. Stadium remains closed and is very grassy. Stores open and require masks. Illogically, sections of the northern half of malecón, the bay promenade, are still taped off and masks required. Bars and clubs closed again, resulting in a 400-person protest.

PRESERVATION OF BEAUTY

CANTERA HILLS - PLAYA GRANDE - CERROS DE CANTERA

SANTA FE, NAYARIT is 18 km. northeast of Vallarta, a 45-minute drive.  Turning east at Mezcales, the first saintly town in the municipality of the Valle de Banderas is San
Clemente, followed by el Porvenir ("future"), San Vicente,  San Jose, Santa Fe and finally San Juan.  This was our first visit to Santa Fe.

Thank you to Janina Erban, owner
of Paraiso Felino (cat shelter with 320 kitties) in San Juan, for
securing location and volunteers and paying the extra gasoline and driving time costs for a clinic outside Vallarta. The clinic took place in an empty, very small cement house in a modest residential area.

CLÍNICA EN SANTE FE, NAYARIT

Heading back to Vallarta on the one-way road just a few kilometers west of Santa Fe, I passed a junkyard where a tan, very pregnant Pit
Bull mix, teats heavy with milk, was standing in front of it.  There
were three small bags of kibble in my car, so stopped and brought the food to the fence. On the other side was a thin, barking male dog
.

and an underweight, sad looking female Boxer/Pit Bull mix with one blue eye.  She had been sitting quietly under the shade of a car´s skeleton before coming over to eat.  A fourth dog was barking at the back of the lot. No humans around.

ON THE ROAD WEST TO SAN JOSÉ FROM SANTA FE.  - HEMBRA MUY SOCIABLE VIVIENDO PARA SER GUARDIÁN DE UN CAMBALACHE PARA VEHÍCULOS
The dogs exist to guard the junkyard.  Puppies will be born on gravel or mud. Those that survive will be given away unsterilized, ultimately adding to hundreds of homeless dogs born to suffer.

PERRA MUY MUY PREÑADA VIVIENDO EN UN CAMBALACHE DE VEHÍCULOS  CERCA DE SANTA FE.

Postscript:  Claudia Gallegos,  generous dog rescuer, made a trip to the junkyard, advising owner she would take the pregnant Pittie home with her, find homes for pups at 8 weeks and return the mother.  The man´s reply was that none of the dogs were pregnant and he didn´t need any help.

STERILIZATIONS AT SANTE FE, NAYARIT - July 8-11

Female dogs - 44; Male dogs - 17; Female cats - 67; Male cats - 40

TOTAL:  168  PLUS

Pregnancies terminated for 1 dog with 8 fetuses; 1 cat with 6 fetuses; 1 cat with 4 fetuses; 1 cat with 3 fetuses; 1 cat with 2 fetuses = 23 animals not born to suffer

CLÍNICA EN UNA BODEGA EN EL PORVENIR

The clinic took place in an airy, long rectangular cement bodega.  A block away at the immaculate and tree-filled plaza, three happy male dogs rollicked and rolled in the lawn´s muddy puddles.  Hot, humid days are broken by occasional evening thunderstorms.

ESPERANDO SU TURNO Y HACIENDO SU DISTANCIA - SANTA FE, NAY.

EDUCATION PROGRAM:  Due to coronavirus, on hold until classes resume.

COVID-19 UPDATE: Mexicans are very sociable. We are missing the embraces and kisses on the cheek.

Shop owners required to wear masks.  Not to comply can result in a 5,000 peso fine.  Hospital occupancy currently at 27%. If at 50%, Vallarta goes into 14-day lockdown.  W Hotel at the long, powdery white sandy beach at Destiladeras beach in Nayarit is open.  Pool open.  Beach closed. All beaches in Nayarit, with the inexplicable exception of Sayulita, are closed.  A pity, as there is so much space and never necessary to cluster.  Vallarta beaches and those to the south open.

WHITE KITTEN:  Loud kitten meows from our patio.  A tiny white kitten, not more than a couple of days old, was crawling very slowly and blindly across the tiles.
GATITO CUANDO LO ENCONTRÉ
EN NUESTRO PATIO.
Two stressful hours later I had found an experienced foster home with Suzanna Persa, who named him "Angelito." She thinks he is male.

"ANGELITO" CON SUZANNA PERSA - FOTO - SUZANNA
Keeping it alive meant bottle feeding the little kitten every three hours.  Suzanna was also bottle feeding three other older kittens every four hours.  After being neutered, Angelito will be for adoption in a couple of months.  The kitten´s arrival at our home remains a mystery.

WHITE CATS:  Those born with non-blue eyes are 17-22% deaf; 40% deaf if born with one blue eye; and 65-85% deaf if both eyes blue.

BROWN PUPPY:  As quickly as its little legs would go, the tiny brown puppy was trotting down the dusty road in Paso Guayabitos. Stopped the car, picked it up and drove home.  She had sweet puppy breath and was full of worms.  The vet said she was not more than five weeks old.  I called her "Petunia."  She spent a week with us before A Dogs New Life shelter found a foster home for Petunia in Bucerias.  After a very short stay, the adorable puppy was adopted.  www.adogsnewlife.org

CACHORRITA DE 5 SEMANAS  QUE ENCONTRÉ EN LA CALLE DEPASO GUAYABITOS.  EL REFUGIO DE
"A DOGS NEW LIFE"  EN BUCERIAS ENCONTRÓ BUENA FAMILIA PARA ELLA.  ADOPTIVE FAMILY.

:JAGUARS:  Two beautiful jaguars were found poisoned high up in the hills above Puerto Vallarta in Sierra de Vallejo, where there are large cattle ranches.  One of the suspected killers posted a photo of himself holding the head of a jaguar, sparking outrage and an investigation that bore no results.
DOS JAGUARES HERMOSOS ENVENADOS EN SIERRA DE VALLEJO.  UNO DE LOS ASASINOS SACÓ UNA FOTO DE ÉL CON LA CABEZA DE UNO DE LOS JAGUARES.  HAY MUCHOS RANCHOS  EN ESAs PARTES.  HAY SEGURIDAD NACIÓNAL PARA TODOS LOS RANCHEROS CON VERIFICACIÓN DE SU MUERTOS DE GANADO.  SIN EDUCACIÓN, EL JAGUAR, QUE ESTÁ EN PELIGRO DE EXTINCIÓN, NO VA A SOBREVIVIR.
Neither Jalisco nor Nayarit have state programs to support ranchers who live amongst predators. However, the National Confederation of Livestock Organizations has a fund that provides insurance covering all reported, verifiable losses. It´s a nationwide compensation payment to which all cattle ranchers are entitled. Educating ranchers is critical to the survival of the endangered Mexican jaguar. For more information and how to help:   www.alianzajaguar.org

PLAYA GRANDE:  To escape from a multitude of masks,  we take our dogs to Playa Grande, a 25-minute drive from centro.  The small village, only reachable by a dirt road, had been closed to outsiders for two months. Behind the village are more than 2,000 hectares of ejido land.  No fishing or hunting allowed.
PLAYA GRANDE  - EL RÍO DE PITIALLA Y SUS COLINAS DE CANTERA Y GRANITO

Playa Grande is not a "big beach." The río Cuale runs through the canyon, and on its banks are a few small, sandy beaches.  The river is bordered on both sides by pink cantera and grey granite cliffs covered in dense, emerald green jungle. There is a great gash on one of the cantera hills from strip mining, which gives the community a source of income.

Next to the river, cool breezes waft down from the foothills of the Sierra Madres. Clouds of dark butterflies cluster on the damp earth, drinking minerals they need to survive. Other than a few young boys in a swimming hole where water is brown from recent torrential rains, we are alone in the natural world.

PRESERVATION OF BEAUTY:   My cousin Eric Overton´s film, "Collodion," concerning the preservation of beauty, was selected as one of the documentaries to be shown at the D.C. Film Festival.  It is now free on Amazon Prime - otherwise for rent or purchase on Amazon.  I think it is very good and dazzlingly beautiful.  Trailer on link below photo:
