OJOS DE DIOS - GOD´S EYES

SAYULITA Y SUS MILES Y MILES DE OJOS DE DIOS

COLONIA MARIANO OTERO: It was PEACEAnimals´first visit to this colonia on the south side of the Libramiento,  the tunnel road.
CLÍNICA EN MARIANO OTERO

The clinic took place in an empty store front, soon to become a laundry. The boy registering his pets in the photo on the left had brought in his family´s five rescue dogs and nine rescue cats.  He said there were more animals at home, but they had all been fixed and almost all had been abandoned in front of their house.

Amongst the volunteers at the clinic:  Ross McNab, owner of Metro Pet Market in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada -and two of his employees.

CLÍNICA EN MARIANO OTERO

Cindy and Morris Kline brought four cats and kittens, the last of the unsterilized felines from the fish market on the malecón.  The Klines feed the kittens and cats there every morning about 7:30 and watched a couple of kittens taken home by locals and one put in a carrier that was scheduled to fly to the U.S.
CLÍNICA EN COLONIA MARIANO OTERO

Livia Hevi, Angelica and Dr. Giuliani were the organizers for this clinic to help the reduce the extreme overpopulation of cats and dogs up the hill from the clinic.  The area is called "cartonlandia," which means "carton land" or "cardboard land."
CARTONLANDIA

The paved road from the clinic dead ends after a mile at a hill where the only way to continue is up a narrow dirt path. At the foot of the hill is a skeleton of a car and a squalid home put together with wooden boards and corrugated tin. The house has dirt floors and no windows or real door. There are apparently about sixty homes like this at the top of the forlorn-looking hill.  Because the people living there are squatters, they have no access to electricity, running water or garbage collection.

A young man sitting on a plastic chair in front of the house was holding a small baby.  His pregnant dog was tied up nearby on a very short rope.  A neighbor passing by said the dog gives birth to two litters a year and that there are always nine puppies per litter.

SOS:  If you would like to help these people, I´m collecting clothing, bedding, food, etc.and will be delivering Tuesday at noon with Livia.

"OJOS DE DIOS" ("GOD´S EYES") These historically spiritual and votive objects are made by weaving a colorful design out of yarn on a wooden cross.  To some of Mexico´s indigenous people,  the eyes represent a confidence in an all-seeing Providence.
2 " OJOS DE DIOS"

SAYULITA
Thousands of "eyes of god" were strung for blocks and blocks above the narrow streets of Sayulita for Day of the Dead and have not been taken down. They dangle and sway in the ocean breezes and give a festive, whimsical feeling to the pretty, former fisherman´s village.  The town of Sayulita continues to grow, with probably more shops than can be supported by the tourists who fill the crowded beach.

Fifteen minutes away is the small town of Litibu, which doesn´t have shops or fancy restaurants.  But its gorgeous long, powdery beach lined with palms is always almost empty and the body surfing can be great.

DISAPPEARING AND REAPPEARING BEACH

PERRA EN PASO ANCHO

THANK YOU to the donors and volunteers who supported PEACEAnimals in 2019.  It was because of you that we were able to sterilize 5,892 cats and dogs last year.  This is 100 animals more than PEACEAnimals sterilized in 2018.

LESLIE PREPARANDO PERROS PARA CIRUGÍA - IXTAPA

TIANGIS LOS MIÉRCOLES- IXTAPA
IXTAPA - PEACEAnimals visits this large municipality of Puerto Vallarta approximately four times annually because of the very high numbers of unsterilized cats and dogs. Wednesday was market day with rows of used clothing and fresh fruit and plant stands.  It was also the day of someone´s funeral.
A garland of white and yellow daises hung over the entrance of the church at the plaza.  Inside, a singer with guitar sang a sweet, mournful song.

The clinic almost always takes place in the local government building across from the main plaza.  If you have looked at our website lately, our home page photo plus a few others were taken there at the Ixtapa location by excellent and popular photographer, Josef Kandoll.  www.peaceanimals.org
DR. POLI Y VOLUNTARIA  LARA FRANKEL  ESTUDIANTE DE UN COLEGIO VETERINARIO
EN INGLATERRA - CLÍNICA EN IXTAPA

Lara Frankel, a fourth year vet school student in England, was at the Ixtapa clinic every day this past week. She was carefully supervised putting in sutures and her work was perfect.  Lara sent me the following message:

"I had such an amazing experience working with the talented and passionate team of PEACEAnimals.
LARA FRANKEL - IXTAPA
I have been able to greatly expand on my skills in surgery, which will help me in the future. Everyone was so warm and welcoming and I am looking forward to coming back in the future. What this organization is doing is not only great for the animals of Mexico but also for the community as a whole!”

There are always thin and emaciated dogs and animals    brought in by their owners.  We would like to be able to give a couple of cups of kibble to all owners of underfed dogs so they have a small boost after surgery.  Please consider donating kibble to our clinics.

DONDE HABÍA UNA PLAYA (CON BASTANTE BASURA) YA REGRESÓ EL RÍO CUALE DESPUÉS DE LA LLUVIA EL PRIMER DÍA DEL AÑO..  RÍO CUALE HAS COVERED ALMOST THE ENTIRE SANDY BEACH AT THE BRIDGE.

Weather has been unseasonably cool the first week of January, with morning temperatures in the high 50´s.
In December, the beach next to the Cuale river was gradually returning after having disappeared completely due to torrential rains in October. On New Year´s Day, a 24-hour heavy rainfall caused the beach to disappear again.
The pluses - no litter below the bridge and a new, small sandy beach at the south end of the malecón.  One can  usually see a fisherman or two there in the early morning.

Sky lanterns, also known as "Chinese lanterns" and made in China and Thailand, started a fire at a Germany zoo the first few minutes of 2020, killing at least 30 animals housed in its Great Ape House. It was the same New Year´s Eve that we were watching fireworks bursting and sky lanterns burning over Banderas Bay.  It was a beautiful sight.
BARN OWL TRAPPED BY SKY LANTERN ..  BUJO ATRAPADO

But sky lanterns kill and maim wild animals and livestock. They are potential serious dangers to airplanes if sucked into an engine. The lanterns are not only fire hazards, they are flying litter, always landing someplace, either on land or in water. Slow to decompose, when eaten by animals the sharp points can tear and puncture animals´ throats and internal organs. Wire rims can strangle.  Entangled in sky lanterns, animals suffer injury and stress in their attempts to escape and die of starvation if unable to break free.
FUEGOS ARTIFICIALES - HERMOSOS Y PELIGROSOS PARA ANIMALES Y EL AMBIENTE.  PUERTO VALLARTA

Fireworks are thrilling,  but the noise can terrorize pets and livestock.  Fireworks cause extensive air pollution, depositing metal particles, toxins, chemicals and smoke into the air.   Some toxins, which end up not only on land, but in bodies of water, never completely disintegrate or decompose.
ARTISTA PIPO BROCKMANN- GALERIA CONTEMPO

DON´T MISS!  Artist Pipo Brockmann´s show at Contempo Gallery at 252 Basilio Badillo.  Around the corner is recently opened (August) Bonito Cafe, a very attractive Asian restaurant with great food and indoor and outdoor seating.  Open for lunches Tuesday-Saturday.
