HURRICANE WEATHER

morning swimmers social distancing - Playa Rosita - nadones cada mañana haciendo distancia social

:
COLONIA BUENOS AIRES:  It´s the first small neighborhood just off the libramiento (tunnel road), next to the Cuale river.  It´s a mix of humble homes and much newer, nicer ones that sit up on the jungled hillside.  PEACEAnimals had not visited this area for a couple of years because of low turn-out, even though there one sees in the streets. The clinic took place next to the river at "Salon Beto," a large, open-air, rental location with a red brick floor and tin roof.  Located on the main road in the middle of the colonia and close to the local school, visibility and accessibility are great.

VALLE DORADO, NAYARIT:  Colonia Valle Dorado is just off the freeway across from affluent Nuevo Vallarta in the neighboring state of Nayarit.  There is poverty and always a surplus of cats and dogs.  I was in San Francisco visiting family that week.  Dr. Poli said a pet owner had arrived at 1 AM the first day.  By 6 AM every day, clinics were full, which disappointed several pet owners. A decision was made to return soon.

Mercado - todos los miércoles - Ixtapa - market day

IXTAPA is the large municipality 30 minutes north east of Puerto Vallarta on the road to San Sebastián.  PEACEAnimals has made multiple visits to this location over the years due to large number of animals in an area with many ranch communities.  The government building across from the main plaza is almost always available. Wednesday, our first clinic day of the week, is also market day at the plaza.  Fruit, plants and used clothing, etc. for sale.  Not many in attendance this week.

EDUCATION PROGRAM:  Due to coronavirus, on hold until regular classes resume.

COVID-19:  For all Mexico, televised classes in time blocks by grade begin next week.  Not every Mexican owns a television, but more own tv´s than computers.  College and university classes will be held via computer.  Hotel occupancy for July has risen from 0% to 24%.  Some villa owners and managers say this is their best summer rental ever. Sheltering-in can be very pleasant here.  Small city, beaches, rivers, jungle and open-air restaurants provide more than adequate social distancing.

These are strange and difficult times.  Norma Kafer, board member, recently sent me an email saying, "Yesterday seemed the same as Thursday, seemed the same as last week, last month... I¨ve described this era as a run-on sentence without punctuation."
El Libramiento  (Tunnel Road)driving south to the turn-off to colonia Buenos Aires

It is ongoing, this feeling of being slightly off balance, suspended in time, dangling in mid-air, waiting for life to be what we once knew, and knowing that it will be different.

Sad News:   Ralph Osborne, one of our founding board members, died on August 18th of COVID-19 in Puerto Vallarta. He was 81. Ralph was a full-time resident and had lived here since 2005.  Ralph loved animals and all things beautiful.  Originally from New York, at the age of eight he was sent to boarding school in Arizona because of his asthma. Surrounded by dogs and horses, he learned how to ride. Later, as a young man, he missed the equestrian riding team for the U.S. Olympics by just one person.  After graduating from Northern Arizona University, Ralph moved to New York City, where he served as president of the International Institute of New Jersey, an organization that resettles refugees.  He recently retired as president of C.S. Osborne & Co., an international manufacturing firm, family owned and operated since the Civil War.  Ralph enjoyed adventures in 150 countries and had plans for more.  He was an active and supportive member of the local Episcopal church.  Ralph was also a board member and great supporter of the Puerto Vallarta Botanical Gardens, where all four of his rescue dogs are buried.  If visiting the gardens, you can see the land he purchased and donated across the Horcones river.  It will remain wild and beautiful and where his ashes will be scattered.  Ralph Osborne was an extraordinary person - kind and good, generous and curious, modest and joyful, loving and very lovable.  So many people have lost a wonderful friend.

Playa Rosita, Puerto Vallarta - mirando a la lluvia sobre el valle de banderas - looking north at rain over banderas valley

It´s hurricane season, which brings blurred,  grey watercolor skies, breezes, cooler weather and often drenching rains. On August 18th, the weather report was that Hurricane Gevieve had reached category 4 west-southwest of the neighboring state of Colima.  Intense rains were predicted for Vallarta.  They didn´t arrive, but high, white-crested waves did.  Surfers were spotted in the bay in front of the disappeared beach under the bridge spanning the río Cuale.

A small, three-year old boy wearing a black mask stands on the bridge with his smiling young mother.  From Leon, Mexico, the little boy has never seen the ocean before. He stands very still, extends his right arm,  points at the bay and in a soft, serious voice, says,  "Agua."
Olas altas - frente del río cuale

On August 19th, at approximately the same time the pirate ship sent off its celebratory display of fireworks over the blackened bay, my seventh grandchild, an 8 lb. 1 oz. girl, was born in San Francisco.  She joins two brothers and a sister that I frolicked with last week at a beach during the heat wave.  The new baby´s sister, age eleven, told me, "I´ve cried before, but it was always when I was sad.  This is the first time I´ve cried tears of joy!"

SHELTERING IN GREEN

"THE GREEN BLANKET" COVERING THE FOOTHILLS OF THE SIERRA MADRES DURING RAINY SEASON
"LA MANTA VERDE" CUBRIENDO LAS COLINAS DURANTE EL TIEMPO DE LAS LLUVIAS - PUERTO VALLARTA
TOMATLÁN, CABO CORRIENTES is a small inland town about  two hours south of Puerto Vallarta.  Tomatlán, meaning "Tomato Land" or "Place of Tomatoes," has been described as a town "one doesn´t need to see."  Because of that and the distance, have never been.
DR. PACHECO - TOMATLÁN, CABO CORRIENTES
PEACEAnimals
visits Tomatlán twice a year, with clinics always taking place at the local community center. Locals, who are very appreciative, raise the required extra costs for driving time and gas  outside Vallarta.

Female cats: 41; Male cats: 11;  Female dogs: 94; Male dogs: 21

TOTAL:  167!  PLUS  pregnancies terminated for 1 dog with 12 fetuses; 1 dog with 9 fetuses; 1 dog with 8 fetuses; 1 dog with 6 fetuses; 1 cat with 2 fetuses = 37 animals not born to suffer

VOLUNTARIAS - TOMATLÁN, CABO CORRIENTES -  todas fotos de Tomatlán-:  Dr. Poli
COAPINOLE, a municipality of Puerto Vallarta, was founded in 1937 with an original ejido land endowment of 1,414 hectares that now include the municipality of Pitillal.

"Demonio Blanco" ("White Demon"), the area of Coapinole where the clinic took place, is named after a famous Mexican wrestler who founded a gym and arena in the neighborhood and put his name on them. They no longer exist, but Manuel Lopez Coronado, aka "The White Demon," lives with his family on the same street as Julie Bunker, who donated the use of her lovely lavender  home for this clinic.
COAPINOLE

sAt 8:30 AM on Wednesday, the clinic was full,  with pet owners still waiting in line.  Those turned away were registered as the first to be served Thursday morning.  Cats were much more in attendance than dogs, and although our guidelines specify dogs in kennels or on leashes and cats in kennels, boxes, bags, etc., several were simply carried to the clinic in the owner´s arms.  Risky.

SHELTERING IN GREEN
LA MANTA VERDE - FOOTHILLS OF THE SIERRA MADRES - PUERTO VALLARTA

"The green blanket" is what my friend Marlee calls the lush,
rain-fed growth of jungle covering the hills above Banderas Bay.  This wild beauty, with a few restaurants tucked away next to a river (there are seven flowing into the bay), is minutes away from town and seems very far away from a pandemic.
SHELTERING IN GREEN - BOCA DE TOMATLÁN

The water in the bay is now peridot green, utterly transparent and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Reflections of ripples in the water are mirrored on the sandy bottom below, resembling brightly lit, oversize spider webs.  Curious small fish swim around us, and we stay in the water for an hour at a time, sheltering in green.

AGUA MUY TRANSPARENTE,  COLOR PERIDOTE VERDE - PLAYA CONCHAS CHINAS

Early one dog walking morning on playa Rosita, a longboarder suddenly stopped paddling.  Large, large black triangular fins were swirling around him. Wing-like, pectoral fins of two enormous mantas gracefully and noisily slapped the water as they swam back and forth in front of the beach, feeding. Diet for mantas is zooplankton - fish eggs, crab larva, mollusk larvae, etc.. Alas, I was too excited to get a good photo.
TEMPRANO EN LA MAÑANA - PLAYA ROSITA - PUERTO VALLARTA

DOS HERMOSAS Y ENORMES MANTAS NADANDO CERCA DE LA ORILLA - PLAYA LA ROSITA

"Sheltering in," the request made by the local government, is not very difficult here.  Beaches, bay, ocean, rivers and jungle offer beauty and bliss. Many restaurants have stayed open and many are open-air.  Gyms have reopened. Stadium remains closed and is very grassy. Stores open and require masks. Illogically, sections of the northern half of malecón, the bay promenade, are still taped off and masks required. Bars and clubs closed again, resulting in a 400-person protest.
