TROPICAL CYCLONE

MEZCALITOS - This was only our second visit to the very small, attractive town 45-minutes driving time north from centro Vallarta.
Located off highway 200, it is next door to upscale Nuevo Vallarta, where many northerners live full or part-time.  Streets in Mezcalito are cobblestone, houses are mostly cement and well maintained and there are plenty of trees. There is even a small hotel. The clinic took place at Jardin Azul (Blue Garden), a lovely, private event location inside a white-walled compound with small playground, swimming pool and grassy picnic area.

On Wednesday, our first clinic-week day, Dr. Poli was the only vet and managed to spay and neuter twenty-five cats and dogs.  Pet owners included a man who brought in five of his ten young rescue cats.  One of them was apparently blind because the rescuer hadn´t had the money to treat an eye infection when it was a kitten.

Poli also consulted with Luis, a young man from el Tuito  (an hour´s drive north of Vallarta) who had brought in a dog his Belgian Shepherd had come home with.  The young, beautiful dog had an open, raw tumor on its chest and another  one under his healthy looking coat.

After an exam, Poli confirmed it was not TVT (transmissible venereal tumor) and recommended a biopsy.  If results are negative for cancer, Dr. Poli will donate surgical removal of the tumors. If positive, no surgery, as tumors will return.

IXTAPA:  PEACEAnimals has made multiple visits over the past six years to this large, clean and orderly municipality of Vallarta.

Thirty-five minutes drive northeast of centro, passing the large prison, the clinic took place next in an empty, white brick storage facility next to the local government offices (ayutamiento) at the main plaza.

Josef Kandoll, a favorite photographer in the Banderas Bay area, came with me on Friday.  He was shooting for our updated website, due to be launched this month.

When we arrived shortly after 9 AM, forty-five animals had been registered and the team wasn´t accepting more.

EZEKIEL Y 3 DE SUS 15 PERROS DEL RANCHO
Ezekiel, a foreman with a great smile from a nearby ranch, was there with three of his female dogs. He said the ranch now has fifteen dogs on it, but none of the males are neutered.  Reason:  Ranch isolated and no dogs living nearby.

His tall friend who had brought in three kittens said he had thirty cats at home and was keeping ten of the females unspayed because he "loves cats."

A man sporting a moustache and goatee and wearing a a green, red and white soccer shirt (Mexico´s colors) brought in his female Pit Bull.  She was two years old had had two litters of ten puppies each.

A small woman with no teeth walked up to me, saying, "I would like to talk to you about a problem I have."  She had brought in four dogs and has twenty more rescue dogs at her home.  The problem:  She leaves for Guadalajara the middle of the month, will be gone five days and has no one to feed her dogs.  I asked if some of her neighbors could help.  "No.  They all hate me because of the dogs."

TROPICAL CYCLONE/HURRICANE NARDA

The tropical cyclone resulted in another hurricane alert. All schools in Vallarta and other areas projected to be affected were ordered closed for September 30 and October 1.

Narda hit the Pacific coast of several states with torrential rains the night of September 30th, causing flooding in different neighborhoods of Puerto Vallarta and destroying the swinging bridge over the río Horcones in Boca de Tomatlán.

The río Cuale, which runs through the heart of town,  overflowed for the first time in fifty years.

Forty-eight hours later, the Cuale overflowed again. The beach under the bridge where we often take our dogs has completely disappeared.  At the water´s edge at la Rosita beach, I walked past the white skeleton of a large sheep or goat that had been carried down to the bay by the flooded Cuale river.
