BEAUTIFUL BEACHES

The beach where most tourists go is los muertos ("the dead ones").  There may have been a cemetery nearby long ago, or perhaps it was named after some drownings.   It is a fairly long and narrow beach,  with many restaurants, umbrellas and licensed beach vendors dressed in white selling pareos, clothing, bedspreads, baskets and jewelry.   During high season, los muertos is very crowded, and on week-ends throughout the year, locals flock to the part of the beach that is closest to the very modern pier.   Like California beaches,  the water is never very clear, and the waves, although sometimes big, break too close to shore to be able to ride them.

3 FOTOS DE CONCHAS CHINAS - UNA DE MIS PLAYAS FAVORITAS

There are beautiful beaches for snorkeling and bodysurfing just outside town to the south.  My favorites beaches - Punta Negra, Conchas Chinas and Las Gemelas - are all "blue" beaches, which means they are cleaned daily and no dogs off leash allowed.  Punta Negra does allow dogs off leash on the north side of the black rocks.   Take an umbrella and food or water to these three beaches.  There is little or no shade, hardly ever a beach vendor - but the water is beautiful and the beaches never many people except on Saturday afternoons and Sundays when the locals aren´t at work.

LAS GEMELAS ("THE TWINS")  NOMBRADO PORQUE HAY UNA PLAYA APARECIDA AL OTRO LADO DE LAS ROCAS.  NAMED BECAUSE THERE IS A SIMILAR BEACH ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LARGE ROCKS.

Pitillal, although part of the municipality of Vallarta, and only a 20-25 minute drive from centro, seems like its own town.   There may be more people living there than in Vallarta proper, and it´s a very busy place. A pretty church built in the colonial style faces the main plaza, and the side streets are filled with shops and restaurants.
CORN TORTILLA FACTORY CLOSE TO CLINIC IN EL PITILLAL - TORTILLERÍA EN EL PITILLAL
The clinic took place four blocks off of the main plaza in a bodega that is normally rented by its owner as a party location.  The space was donated to PEACEAnimals.   On Wednesday, our first clinic day every week, I brought a donated kennel and some of the thousand educational coloring books for children that bring in pets for spay/neuter.   Thirty-one cats and dogs arrived, including four  kittens and a feral cat
rescued from the isla Cuale by Puro Gato.   The adult grey cat will be returned to the isla and hopefully homes found soon for the pretty orange and white kittens.  Last week Puro Gato brought ten rescue kittens to the clinic in Mojoneras.

I took half-a-dozen to the five and six-year old boys who play every day after school in the río cuale under the hanging bridge closest to the beach.  They are there every afternoon after school and stay until their mothers finish work at the nearby mercado artenasía.   The river is extremely shallow now and will remain so until the rains.

Although there is a large trash can on the sidewalk above the river bank, a lot of trash is either left or  thrown out by the river.  I was happily surprised and appreciative to see a young man collecting bags of it one later afternoon.

ENCONTRADA EN EL MALECÓN, RESCATADA Y YA ESTÁ EN LA SPCAPV
RESCUED:  I had seen a small, black male Terrier mix in my neighborhood.  He was filthy and his long hair was very matted.  I could approach him, but as I was always with my three dogs, he ran away when I got very close.  I thought I had seen him on the malecón one day, and was concerned that he would be hit by a car when he tried to cross the street. I sent a photo to the SPCAPV, who responded that they would take him.  Two days later I saw the little black dog again on the malecón. It looked different that I remembered, but I picked the dog up and brought it home.  It was a female dog, and not the one I had originally been searching for.  After being fed and given water, her tail was no longer tucked between her legs and she was licking my face.   The little dog is adorable and now safe at the SPCAPV.  Am still hoping to find the male look-alike.

KITTENS AND CATS:   PEACEAnimals has spayed and neutered hundreds that have been rescued by AngeliCAT, Paraiso Felino and Puro Gato.  These volunteer organizations are unable to donate. PEACEAnimals makes it less expensive for organizations and individuals to rescue animals.  Cats and dogs are not only sterilized for free, they are all treated for ticks, fleas, parasites and mange, if it is present.  Consulations are free, as is uncomplicated treatment.  Donations to PEACEAnimals will help us continue to relieve the expenses of rescuers.

From Shannon Beston, who has been feeding and rescuing kittens and cats on and around the isla Cuale for years:

"...We are working at PREVENTING NEW BIRTHS.   Last week we took 2 pregnant stray cats for surgery to the Peace clinic preventing 4+2 new births. By having those female cats fixed,  it potentially prevented hundreds of unwanted kittens."

DIFFERENT KINDS OF BEAUTY

PESCANDO EN PUNTA NEGRA

At dawn at Punta Negra, the only people there were casting nets for small fish.   Our three dogs ran back and forth on the beach while I swam in the warm, pale peridot-colored water.  Overhead, frigates (called"tijeras" by locals, which means "scissors"  for their split tail feathers) made wide circles, swooping down frequently to scoop up fish.

TIJERAS EN PUNTA NEGRA PESCANDO.   PUNTA NEGRA ESTÁ NOMBRA PARA LA PUNTA DE PIEDRAS NEGRAS.  FRIGATES CIRCLING OVERHEAD.  THE BEACH IS NAMED FOR THE BLACK, ROCKY POINT.

A thirty-minute fast drive south to another kind of beauty - a private nursery specializing in fruit trees and the most extensive collection of the heliconia species in all of Mexico.
CARMEN DE ALBA CON YAKA EN UN VIVERO PRIVADO AL SUR DE VALLARTA-JACKFRUIT PLANT.
My friend Carmen de Alba and I spent an hour touring the gardens with the owner, sampling the few fruits that had fruited and learning the proper names of the many exotic plants.  I brought home white ginger, an extremely fragrant jasmine, and have ordered seeds for a cocoa tree and a few other beautiful plants.

In the opposite direction, MOJONERAS is a colonia thirty minutes northeast of Vallarta by car and sixty minutes by bus.  It is dusty place with very little beauty.
PLAZA DE MOJONERAS
There is a cement park with very small grassy area, some trees and a bandstand.  A very drunk man with a grey moustache and very few front teeth asks me to take his picture next to two shaggy dogs seeking shade.  He tells me they are not his dogs, but that they´re "very nice."

PERROS BUSCANDO SOMBRA EN EN EL PARQUE DE MONJONERAS.  ESTE SEÑOR DIJO QUE NO ERAN LOS SUYOS PER QUE ERAN MUY NOBLES.

Two women wearing cotton print dresses walk by,  holding up black umbrellas to protect them from the burning sun.  I see a small black and tan unaltered dog near the vegetable and fruit stand across from the bandstand and ask if there is an owner.  No.  Two young boys approach and I give them 20 pesos to have them walk the dog a block to the clinic.  Yellow-shirted young children stand in line in the schoolyard waiting for a turn in the jumpy house.  I take a photo and a smiling, plump woman approaches the fence and apologetically tells me photographs are not allowed.
LIMPIO (CLEAN) PARQUE EN MOJONERAS

The clinic was held in a government building around the corner from the primary school.  There were two new fans this week, purchased  because the heat and humidity  (temperatures in the high 80´s with over 70% humidty) were causing cats in the recovery area to pant while still sedated.  Also there, a very large dark grey and white Pit Bull that looked exactly like the photograph of one in an SOS post for an abandoned Pittie from another colonia.  The dog at the clinic was in fact a rescue and had been brought in from another neighborhood.
PIT BULL RESCATADO EN OTRA COLONIA Y FUÉ TRAIDO POR SU RESCATADORA A LA CLÍNICA EN MOJONERAS
Josué, a sweet, round-faced ten-year old, was there every day to volunteer.  I remembered him from last year, when he also helped daily at the clinic.  The pet registration form has questions to answer, including,  "Did your pet eat this morning?"  The small black street dog vomited a couple of times after being tranquilized, which gave the answer to the of the food question.  When I asked Josué to please clean up after the dog, he looked very surprised and asked, "why me?"   Leslie, our vet tech, replied that it was part of a day at a clinic.

JOSUÉ CON EL PERRITO NEGRO DE LA CALLE QUE FUÉ ESTERILIZADO

Although the neighborhood was very quiet, with very few people out on the streets, Dr. Poli said that Mojoneras is a "very rough" area.    He mentioned that at night there are gang members, mostly from southern Mexico, who come out with guns and machetes.  Our housekeeper is from Mojoneras and says that she never goes out after dark.

MAY MARKS THE  THIRD YEAR OF PEACEANIMALS MOBILE FREE SPAY/NEUTER CLINICS.  DURING THESE PASTTHREE YEARS, OUR EXCELLENT  VET TEAM HAS STERILIZED MORE THAN 12,000 CATS AND DOGS.  OUR MISSION IS TO HELP PREVENT THE FUTURE SUFFERING OF ANIMALS.  THESE CLINICS DO THAT.  THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THIS IMPORTANT ENDEAVOR.

CAT NEWS:  Puro Gato reports at least fifteen new cats and kittens have been abandoned on the isla cuale this past week.  There are mamas with babies and babies by themselves.  Shannon Beston, who feeds the island cats daily, has more than 20 rescued kittens from the island in her office now.

OTRO RESCATADO Y PARA ADOPCIÓN - CONTACTO:  shannon@bestonproperties.com

Kittens are almost always easier to find homes for than adult cats.  I have been feeding four homeless cats for a couple of years that stay two blocks from our home.  I have known the scruffy white and grey cat for the ten years I have lived here.  For the first few years, I called him the "devil cat" because  he was very wild and frequently climbed over our walls to fight with our seven cats.  With time and by feeding him, he became tame (and rather plump) and I was able to take him to a PEACEAnimals clinic for neutering.  He found shelter in an abandoned house with a male tabby, a black male with a white stripe down its nose and a long-haired, black female cat.  I took them all for spay and neuter to our clinics and fed them.  Anna Laurita, owner and teacher at the wonderful DavannaYoga, made sure they were fed when I was away.  The abandoned house has now been boarded up and is being convered into a restaurant.
VIVIENDO EN LA CALLE 10 AÑOS.  CARIÑOSO Y NECESITA HOGAR.  CONTACTO:  gretchen@peaceanimals.org

Last week, after having fed all of the cats in the morning, I found the black female lying dead on the sidewalk near their feeding place in the late afternoon.  There was no foam near her mouth, which would indicate a poisoning - just a small amount of blood next to her body.  I believe it was "Paco," a dog that I had taken to be neutered, who had killed her.  Although he apparently has an owner, Paco is always on the streets and I had seen him viciously attack two streets cats in the past.  They were able to escape.  The little black cat apparently had no place no run to in time. She was sweet and she was confident and I feel very sad about this.
MANCITOS, AMOROSOS, ESTERILIZADOS - 2-3 AÑOS DE EDAD - NECESITAN HOGARES - gretchen@peaceanimals.org

The scruffy cat is about ten years old and has become an angel.  He´s the one who seems  more interested in receiving pats and rubs than eating.   The other two males are two or three years old.  They would all make great pets.  The only shelter from the sun and from the rains that will soon arrive,  is under cars parked on Aldama street between Guadalupe Sanchez Miramar in centro  They need homes.  I will be happy to deliver one or all to you.  Please contact me.
