OUR BEAUTIFUL BUBBLE

MANGOS - PLAYA CONCHAS CHINAS - PUERTO VALLARTA

On 9/11, we understood that our lives would be different.  With the coronavirus, the world recognizes that life on this planet has been forever changed.  In Puerto Vallarta, we are inside a beautiful bubble that we hope won´t burst.
TODAS LAS FOTOS DE LOS ANIMALITOS Y SUS DUEÑOS SON DE LA CLÍNICA EN IXTAPA.

IXTAPA- This municipality is a 35-minute drive northeast of Vallarta.  Our clinics have made multiple visits to this location, and there are always many animals brought to it.  Hand soap and sanitizing wipes available for all visitors and volunteers.
7 CACHORRITOS PARA ESTERILIZAR.  SUS 5 HERMANITOS FUERON PUESTO EN ADOPCIÓN SIN OPERARLOS.

When I arrived at 8 AM on Thursday, 46 cats and dogs had already been registered.
The pretty pre-teen wearing a blue print cotton dress and black leggings offered to help bag dog kibble for giveaway. She said she was "glad there were no classes." A smooth-faced woman with some broken front teeth asked for ten bags of kibble. She had just rescued five street dogs and was grateful for the help.  A tired looking woman and her plump teen-age daughter arrived after 9 AM with a large green plastic storage box filled with seven mostly tan-colored puppies.  The mama dog had been brought for spaying the day before, but there had been no space for the pups.  Five of the original litter of twelve had already been given away, unsterilized.  The mother and daughter had driven a long distance, so Dr. Poli didn´t turn them away.  Others were.

RECENT RESCUES/ADOPTIONS AT CLINICS:

4 street dogs - March 4-7 - Colonia del Mar

The tan and white female dog that I immediately fell in love with and posted in blog  - adopted by new clinic volunteer, Jordan Harris; a male Chihuahua mix now named "Latte" is being fostered by Karen Puerini-Razza of San Pancho Animales and will fly soon to his new home in Minnesota;  two white Terrier mixes - siblings that have been named  "Tito" and "Mija, " are in a MexPup foster home.  Thank you to Angela Kelleher, volunteer coordinator and advisory board member,  for contacting MexPup and San Pancho Animales to ask for help and to those two fine organizations who did.

PANGA SUNDAYS:  Far from the undulating green foothills that tumble down to the rocky shore, the sky was filled with birds. So many birds always means fish,  and fish can mean dolphins.

WATER COLOR BY JOYCE HARTVIGSON

As we approached, the silvery silence of the bay was broken by the loud squawks and quacks of blue footed boobies and seagulls. In the roiling, transparent water was a mega pod of dolphins competing with birds for sardines.
8 DE MARZO - FOTOS DE DELFINES Y BALLENAS -  KARLA DE LA PEÑA (BOCA DIVERS)
8 DE MARZO
We stayed in the area for an hour before motoring off to encounter whales who almost immediately showed their flukes before disappearing beneath the mirror-like water. A week later, we encountered another large pod of dolphins after motoring west for almost an hour.  Soon afterwards we found ourselves in close proximity to four nonplussed humpback whales, who leisurely lolled about on the surface.
BALLENAS - 15 DE MARZO
We stayed with them at the required distance of 60 yards and for the time limit of 30 minutes.  Sunday, March 22nd is the last legal whale watching day.  After that, no lingering allowed.  By the end of April, the whales will have all started their long journey north, females either with their calves or pregnant.

EDUCATION PROGRAM: In addition to Easter vacation, as a precautionary measure against coronavirus, schools closed until April 20th.  No education program until then.

INFORMACIÓN DE LAS CLÍNICAS EN ESPAÑOL:

In 2019, PEACEAnimals sterilized 5,892 cats and dogs.
(Unfortunately, this dog with 10 puppies was not one of the dogs).

LA MAMÁ DE 10 CACHORRITOS Y EL DUEÑO DEMASIADO ENFERMO CUIDARLOS.
RESCATADA CON 8 BEBÉS
A slightly mysterious dog story:  The mama dog has an owner who is too ill and too poor to care for the German Shepherd/Pit Bull puppies.  He posted a "free puppies" sign, and on March 15, someone described as a "gringo" picked up two of them. The puppies were 19 days old.  Then the mother and eight puppies disappeared.  After two days of phone calls and emails trying to find out what had happened to the dogs, the mama and her eight puppies showed up at Mascotas vet clinic.

Thank you to Claudia Gallegos, rescuer, for picking up the dog family and taking them the vet; to Barb Drucker and her husband Louis Drake for pledging 5,000 pesos for their vet care;  and to Ada Goldberg for offering a foster home.  Adoption information will be posted in this blog in approximately one month.

TONANTZINTLA & TLACHIHUALTEPETL

SANTA MARIA TONANTZINTLA EN CHOLULA

COLONIA DEL MAR is high up in the hills with dirt and rutted  roads and lots of homeless dogs.  The clinic took place in the donated garage space of the Chilpansingo restaurant.  Thank you to owner Rocio Ochoa,  to the volunteers who collected homeless animals and brought them to our clinic and to the two high school students who bagged donated dog kibble for distribution.
BOLSITAS DE CROQUETAS PARA LOS PERROS QUE NECESITAN - COLONIA DEL MAR

One of the street dogs, a brown and white Pittie mix described as having had "many litters," was especially appealing.  After giving her several pats and strokes,  she stood up on her hind legs, gently put her front legs on my shoulders and began to lick my face.  The woman who feeds her hopes to find a home for this very loving dog.  She will be a great and grateful pet. Email contact below photo if interested.

There was a sad sight of the beautiful, white male Shepherd mix tied to our trailer.  He was suffering from TVT (malignant venereal tumors) and would be euthanized.  There is still no chemo for animals in Vallarta.

A VISIT TO CHOLULA AND PUEBLA:  On our drive from Mexico City to Puebla, we stopped in the town of Cholula to visit la Iglesia de Santa María Tonanzintla.   Named for the Mother Goddess Tonantzin,  the Spaniards replaced her with the Virgin Mary.
STA. MARÍA DE TONANTZINTLA - CHOLULA

Puebla, founded by the Spaniards in 1531 in order to secure the trade route between Mexico City and the port of Vera Cruz, requested that the indigenous people to build a church.  The word and the structure were unknown to the inhabitants of the New World, as were the required angels and lions.

Construction of the church in nearby Cholula began in 1594, with the intricate stucco work beginning at the end of the 17th century and final completion of the church at the end of the 20th century. Santa María Tonantzintla is the only indigenous baroque style church not destroyed by the Spaniards.

Bedazzled.  Entering the church, I immediately got goosebumps. It felt like being inside an enormous, fantastically beautiful and elaborately adorned Fabergé egg. The interior is a kaleidoscopic riot of intensely bright colors, with gilded figures of animals, flowers, birds and headdresses.  Saints are both dark skinned with dark hair and dark eyes, or pale skinned with blue eyes and blonde hair.  Angels are portrayed as wide-eyed babies and children with eagle wings. There are absolutely no empty spaces here.

Our driver said that even though he had visited this church many times, it was his first time inside.  He was visibly moved when he told me "this makes me feel very proud of my heritage."

LA IGLESIA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LOS REMEDIOS - SOBRE EL GRAN PIRÁMIDE DE CHOLULA

Eight miles from Cholula and four miles outside the city of Puebla is the Great Pyramid of Cholula, also known as "Tlachihualtepetl,"  "made-by-hand mountain" in the Nahuatl language.  Approaching a large hill, one sees the the very pretty terra cotta and yellow painted Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios perched on top.  It is the usual way of how the Spaniards in Mexico did things - build what was sacred to themselves on top of what was sacred to others.

EL GRAN PIRÁMIDE DE CHOLULA

Inside the grass covered hill are six super mound structures that were begun in the 3rd century AD. and completed in the 9th century AD.  The pyramid was dedicated to the god Quetzalcoatl and per volume, is the largest pyramid in the world and also the largest monument in the world.  The base measures 1,480 feet by 1,480 feet, with a height of 217 feet and a total volume of 16 billion cubic feet. Covered with grass for centuries,  the adventure is to go inside the pyramid, where a series of tunnels criss-cross the middle of it.  At one location, one can gaze down to the first platform built in the third century AD, and from another, gaze high up to the most recently built ninth platform - completed twelve centuries ago.
