AFTER THE RAIN

ARRIBA DEL MALECÓN EN CENTRO
AFTER THE RECENT RAINS, the skies are so beautifully blue, the jungles are intensely emerald green, the flora is gorgeous in the extreme and the air is fresh and breezy.  Many of the beaches are still covered with stones and the sand and rock sculptures off the malecón will be missing until the storms end.   Temperature of the rippling bay now ranges between 82 and 84 degrees, almost matching air temperature.

Multi-colored sunsets are spectacular.  The buzz of male cicadas, newly emerged after a thirteen or seventeen-year underground cycle
feeding on the juice of roots, is heard every night.  The choruses of mating calls signal the beginning of not only their love fests, but the rainy season. More rain and thrilling thunderstorms are anticipated for next week.

June 19, 2013 was the first surgery week for PEACEAnimals.  In two years, we have sterilized more than 8,000 cats and dogs, preventing the future suffering of many thousands of animals.  Towns and neighborhoods are cleaner, safer and quieter and wildlife is at less risk for decimation with the reduction of unwanted pets.  PEACEAnimals needs financial support to continue this important work.

WINNERS!!!!!  Pets for Life, our independent contractors,  competed against 21 vet teams at the Consulta Internaciónal in Manzanillo in the state of Colima the week of June 3rd. Pets for Life placed first.   PEACEAnimals has a fantastic team.  **************************************************************

Villas del Puerto is a middle-class neighborhood with no villas in sight, but not far from the port.   It´s about a twenty-minute drive from centro, just northeast of Sam´s and Walmart, which are located across the busy intersection from the cruise ships docks.  The clinic took place in an empty rental house on a quiet, tree-lined street a few blocks away from a small Catholic church.
CLÍNICA EN VILLAS DEL PUERTO
At the clinics, cats and kittens are normally sterilized first, as they take the longest to wake up from anesthesia.  On Thursday, a very aggressive male German Shepherd was tranquilized and anesthetized right away  so his owner could come back for him as early as possible.  Volunteer Frank Ohly was extra cautious monitoring the Shepherd at the recovery table, not wanting the dog to suddenly wake up and bite and/or bolt before it could be put into a kennel.  Angelica of AngeliCAT was there with four rescue kittens for sterilization.   She often comes to more than one clinic a week,  as there is a never-ending supply of rescued cats and kittens.  AngeliCAT has approximately 70 cats and kittens for adoption at any given moment and will deliver a variety to your home to choose from.  If interested, contact AngeliCAT via FB.

EDUCATION PROGRAM:  Leslie Caratachea presented to 224 young people at Secundaria Foránea Número 60 in colonia la Aurora.  She says that parents of children who were part of presentations continue to bring in pets.

DONATIONS TO PEACEANIMALS:  Secretary of Health - Puerto Vallarta - Zoletil- enough to anesthetize 200 cats and dogs.  This was donated to Pets for Life, our independent contractors.  As the health department here requires that the medicine be used in Puerto Vallarta, Pets for Life has passed the donation on to PEACEAnimals for our clinics.  Pets for Life clinics take place outside of Vallarta.

PASTOR BELGA RESCATADO Y NECESITA HOGAR
Paulina Stettner, former director of PEACEAnimals, says there is an epidemic of abandoned Belgian Shepherds and that it will probably get worse after the release of the film "Max," which features one of these beautiful and intelligent dogs.

Brischa and Ted Borchgrevink, advisory board member of PEACEAnimals and owners of LADRA dog boarding and refuge, have recently taken in nine very young puppies found in a dumpster and twelve other abandoned puppies.  The twenty-one puppies are at their home, and all the rescued adult dogs at the LADRA ranch.  The Borchgrevinks need help with fosters and adoptions!  Please contact LADRA via FB.

NEEDS HOME:   Gabriela Maravilla has been feeding a pregnant white dog in colonia Lomas de Coapinole.  I happened to see the photo of this dog on FB Friday morning and responded. The person was at work so couldn´t collect the dog Friday to take to the PEACEAnimals clinic for termination of the pregnancy.  Dr. Poli said he thought it was Gabriela brought the dog in Saturday and who will foster her for three days.   If you can give this dog a temporary or permanent home, please contact Gabriela via FB. The dog will have to be put back on the street if no solution found.  Homeless dogs  and cats tearing apart garbage bags searching for food are usual sights here.

SAFELY BACK HOME:  "Canela," the dog wandering around the PEACEAnimals clinic in Volcanes that was in heat.
"CANELA" REGRESADA A SU CASA DESPUÉS DE ESTAR OPERADA Y EN CASA PUENTE 2 SEMANAS DESPÚES POR ESTAR EN CELO Y SUELTA EN LA CALLE IN VOLCANES.
Her family agreed to have her spayed and taken to Soraya for a two-week stay afterwards.  As mentioned in a previous blog, the scent of estrus lingers for two weeks and Canela, an unsupervised dog running loose,  would have been mounted and probably injured in colonia Volcanes..
