SAN JUAN, NAYARIT - PEACEAnimals visits this quiet, immaculate town northeast about 50 minutes driving time from Vallarta in the neighboring state of Nayarit. Close to the foothills of the Sierra Madres and surrounded by green, San Juan is an agricultural area where corn, watermelon, beans, tomatoes and tobacco are grown.

The trailer donated by Corinne and Michael Eastham was driven by Amy Welch, PEACEAnimals treasurer, to the clinic on Wednesday.
Thirty-two cats and dogs had been registered, including an emaciated little black dog covered in mange and whose teats were partially filled with milk. Volunteers brought her in for spaying, along with her eight-week old bridle puppy. The same volunteers would be bringing her other six puppies on Thursday.

The first twelve days of Christmas: No turtle doves or partridges, but newly hatched baby turtles on beaches slowly moving across the sand to the bay, and humpback whales breaching, birthing and courting.
Last week-énd on a panga outing with Karla de la Peña of Boca Divers, one of her friends from Mexico City handed out small pearls to toss into the ocean as a blessing. A few seconds after Carmen de Alba threw her pearl into the water, three female whales, a male and a calf rose to the surface sixty meters away. It had been only been fifteen minutes after motoring out from Boca de Tomatán.
Continuing further out into the bay, we could see the pale white plumes of warm air exhaled by humpbacks as they swam close to the jungled shoreline. Later in the day while we snorkeled in a small cove, a solitary whale showed its tail and then disappeared beneath the clear Mediterranean-blue water.
Midnight on December 12th was the culmination of the "pilgrimages" to the Church of our Lady of Guadalupe. A combination of festival and religion, many thousands of celebrants had been participating in the processions on Juarez street in centro for the first twelve days of Christmas.
Vendors at temporary stands were selling tacos, tamales, burritos, sopes, mole, pies, cakes, crepes, coffees, fresh fruit juices, atole and stacks of tangerines. Bands marched with pounding drums, blasting horns and bleating tubas, charro-dressed singing mariachis strummed guitars and played trumpets, "Aztecs" costumed in headdresses, feathers and sequins danced down the street, and large groups of candle-carrying "pilgrims, many of whom had walked for miles, sang "la Guadalupana" ("Lady of Guadalupe"). The church bells of Our Lady of Guadalupe clanged joyously as crowds entered the church with offerings of food and flowers.
