DRAMATIC RESCUE

After cool and drizzly, dove grey days when there had been an almost imperceptible difference in color between water and sky, the sun emerged on February 24th.  It was this day that we experience a close encounter with two whales.

We motor thirty minutes west towards the Marieta Islands before seeing our first whales.
Nearby,  a tour boat filled with passengers quietly watches three whales from a respectful distance of 60 meters, the required legal distance for a certified whale watching boat.  For non-certified boats, the required distance is 120 meters. Two adults and a juvenile engage in joyful tail and dorsal fin slapping and stay mostly on the surface of the water.
Leaving this scene, we motor further south, encountering approximately half-a-dozen more whales.  With an idling engine, we watch two adult whales on the surface for several moments before they submerge and disappear.  Then suddenly, with a great blast of air, the whales appear a panga´s length away from us.  Excited yelps continue as the curious whales follow our boat for a minute after we slowly motor away.

On land,  rocks tossed up by churning waves onto la Rosita beach inspires someone to stack them, creating a whimsical sight.  Pelicans perching on a solitary panga watch snowy white egrets wade on spindly black legs and yellow feet into receding surf to spear small fish with their long bills.  Beautiful Puerto Vallarta.

MORE WONDERFUL SIGHTS:  A favorite place to visit on Wednesday "Art Walks" in centro is the home studio of ceramist Froylán Hernández.  Originally from Guanajuato, he has worked in the U.S. with famous ceramist Michael Frimka,  in Canada at the Centre Culturel de Ville Mont-Royal and has been living and working in Vallarta for the past twenty years.  One of Froylán´s pieces is in the Museo Nacional de Arte Popular in Mexico City.  Organic and fanciful, Froylán is a master in technique and imagination.  Prices are more than fair.

Art Walks in Centro take place during high season every Wednesday from 6 PM-9 PM.  Because Froylán´s studio is in his home, one can usually find him there most days of the week. Visitors are welcome if the door is open.  Abasolo 238, Centro.   Tel. 322 121 0476

DRAMATIC RESCUE!  Driving south on Highway 200, PEACEAnimals board member, Ofelia Osuna McHugh,  spotted a dog she recognized as being one of Shakira´s (rescued redheaded Xolo) pups from an earlier litter than those rescued in December.
LOS 10 BEBÉS MÁS JÓVENES DE LA XOLO SHAKIRA
Ofelia followed carefully behind the brown dog for several kilometers as it ran frantically down the highway, narrowly missing being hit by several cars.  Reaching the Mirador de Mismaloya, the terrified dog ran down the cliff and plunged into the bay.  Ofelia watched it swim a long distance towards the rocky outcroppings of Los Arcos, where a panga filled with tourists spotted the dog and pulled it into the boat.  Ofelia, her brother Juan and his assistant Anabel rushed down to the beach, rented a panga and headed towards Los Arcos, where they located the panga with Shakirá´s pup.  Named "Juanito" after the Mexican Olympic swimmer, Juanito Veloz, the handsome, gentle dog is approximately one-year old and healthy.  His tic is evidence of having survived distemper.  All 12 dogs have been spoken for,  and after being spayed and neutered at a PEACEAnimals clinic, will go to their new homes.

COLONIA INFONAVIT, PUERTO VALLARTA - Fifteen minutes northeast from centro and just before crossing the Pitillal river,  the clinic took place in the police station across the road from a dusty park.  The small, one-story cement building is empty except for a couple of lockers, a white plastic table and chair and one very relaxed and friendly policeman. There were turn-aways on Wednesday because several people brought in multiple animals.  One woman arrived early with a mama dog and her ten silky puppies,  all pretty, all wearing blue or pink ribbon collars and all for adoption.
