In Puerto Vallarta, the first Twelve Days of Christmas are observed with evening "pilgrimages" along cobbled Juarez street, a main artery into centro. The processions end at the church of Our Lady of Guadalupe with the great ringing of bells. The celebrations are a combination of religion and carnival. Candle-holding worshipers singing the not very melodic"la Guadalupana," brass marching bands and folkloric and Aztec costumed dancers. Street food is sold on all sides of every corner - tacos, tostadas, tamales, enchiladas, quesadillas, hamburgers, hot dogs and an enormous variety of desserts, many of them homemade. Families sit on sidewalks watching the show while children laugh as they chase bubbles being blown by vendors.

ELUSIVE REDHEAD: The red-headed Xoloscuintle
(Mexican Hairless dog) had been named "Shakira" by her owner. She was beaten and left on the highway near Playas Gemalas after killing one of the man´s chickens. For several years, a few individuals had tried to capture the elusive and beautiful Xolo. At least one male dog found her during some of her heats. It´s very possible the Xolo had given birth to dozens of puppies over the years.
A year-and-a-half ago, Juanito Osuna began feeding and giving water to the Xolo. He hired Anabel to help him build a sheltered corral in the hills where the Xolo and her pups of different ages could eat and sleep. Weeks ago Juanito noticed that Shakira was pregnant again and made the decision to begin an emergency capture/rescue.
"SHAKIRA" EL 6 DE DICIEMBRE |
Ofelia Osuna McHugh, PEACEanimamls board member and her brother Juanito employed a cousin, Fernando Holschneider, a wildlife management expert, to capture Shakira. A 4´x 6´trap was built, with the hope that the Xolo would go into it before giving birth. But on December 8th, Shakira was discovered in full labor next to the corral. Eight puppies were born on the hill. Peacefully taken to MASCOTAS vet clinic, the mama Xolo gave birth to four more there.
Brischa and Ted Borchgrevink, owners of LADRA rescue refuge and advisory board members of PEACEAnimals, agreed to take the family of thirteen the following day. Hopefully Shakira, who will get a new name, will be socialized during the three-month wait for the puppies to get their first vaccines and be sterilized. Shakira´s romeo, a handsome, black retriever-mix, will be neutered this week.
Ongoing efforts are underway to trap and sterilize the four older siblings of the new puppies. If unable to be socialized, they will be released where found. As of this writing, the older pups have been avoid the trap. The only animal caught after the mama was taken from the hill was a tlacuache.

MANDARINAS EN EL MERCADO DE IXTAPA |
I was at the clinic Wednesday, which is always the weekly outdoor market surrounding the main plaza. Fragrant tangerines from Vera Cruz were being sold at 25 pesos for three kilos. With tender memories of Christmas stockings filled with tangerines, chocolates and small treasures, I bought nine kilos of tangerines,
