NIGHT OF THE IGUANA

MISMALOYA - A word that comes from the Nahuatl word, "michmaloyan," meaning "place where they grab fish with their hands."  In the early 60´s, Puerto Vallarta was a small fisherman´s town of 15,000 inhabitants.  Mismaloya, a municipality of Vallarta, was a village located 12.4 miles south of Vallarta, only reachable by boat or by hacking through the jungle.
"NOCHE DE LA IGUANA" - MISMALOYA

In 1963, Puerto Vallarta became famous, thanks to the filming of Tennessee Williams´ "Night of the Iguana."   With approximately 2,000 now people living in Mismaloya, it is still a small village, and there is poverty. Most of the nicest homes are on the hill overlooking the cove where Ava Gardener danced barefoot on the sand.

The clinic took place in the village kindergarden, which provided a large space and open air.  Unfortunately, our banners had been stolen at a recent clinic, so we had no signage and no way for people to see the clinic walking or driving by the school.  Our first day, usually our slowest, was our busiest. Thirty-eight cats and dogs were brought in from Boca, el Nogalito and Mismaloya. On my way there again on Friday morning, I saw a small, grey Terrier, tongue hanging out, running rapidly down the two-lane, curvy coastal "highway." Afraid it would be hit, I drove slightly ahead of the frantic dog, stopped the car, jumped out and tried to grab it.  I tried this several times without success, so followed the exhausted dog two miles into Mismaloya.

Next to the highway, I was able to edge the little dog into the trash collection area, where it lay down next to the overflowing dumpster and a small, black and white dog. I immediately went to the clinic and asked for help. Dave Wright, volunteer and local resident, drove back to the site with me and coaxed and caught the scared dog by putting a cup of water next to it.  After being neutered and treated for fleas, ticks and parasites, a phone call was made to the SPCAPV, photo emailed, dog accepted and delivered to their vet for tests.  This is a very pretty and very sweet, three-year old dog.

Friday was very slow.  Only thirteen animals were brought in, which is always a concern for following days. On Saturday, I stopped off in el Nogalito and collected two female dogs from a man walking with them on the road. After delivering them to clinic, I drove up and down the Mismaloya road and was able to collect seven more. Volunteers brought in dogs from the beach and el Nogalito.
PERRO ATTROPEADO EN LA CARRETERA DE MISMALOYA - SUERTE - NO FRACTURA.

I was flagged down on the highway by a grey-haired, pony-tailed, ornately tattooed man. He said his German Shepherd-mix dog had had been hit by a car three days before and had difficulty walking.  Driving back to the clinic with the dog, the husky-voiced man told me he was a musician from Spain and had moved to Mexico six years ago because he "loved the music here."  Dr. Anthony confirmed there were no fractures and gave the owner pain meds for the gentle dog. Neutering not possible for at least another week because of injury.

On Sunday, Karla de la Peña returned from Boca with her friend Cynthia  with four dogs for sterilization. They were intent on catching three very large, feral female dogs that live next to the highway.  Karla had given them bits of hot dogs the day before,  in order to gain the dogs´ confidence. On Sunday, Dr. Poli spiked several hot dogs with tranquilizers and Karla and Cynthia drove to the shack off the highway where the dogs spend time.  The three dogs with pendulous teats were there. Karla sat down and slowly tossed pieces of the hot dogs to each individual dog.  After an hour of waiting, the skittish dogs were still alert and impossible to lasso. They will continue to have two litters a year until they can be socialized,  caught and spayed.

Karla told me there was an old, bearded man living close to the zoo who owned about fifteen dogs.  He had brought seven in on our first day, but hadn´t returned.  I drove to the very poor home and thirteen large, friendly dogs ran out in a pack to greet me. Also outside the shack were a very fat, tied-up pig, a tethered burro and a small, sick-looking puppy.

The amiable owner, wearing a torn straw hat, said he had been unable to catch the other dogs.  His grandson grabbed a young, brown dog and handed me the puppy.  The dog was neutered at the clinic, but the puppy was too sick for surgery,  so was only given meds for parasites.  The remaining seven dogs will continue to breed.

Among the volunteers at the Mismaloya clinic was Angela Kelleher (with her friend Jessica Gunn), who stayed in Vallarta an extra week so she could participate.  Angela and her husband, Dave Mcintyre,  arrived in Vallarta from Vancouver for the first time in December. Since then,  Angela has been

volunteering twice at week at our clinics, once or twice a week at the Acopio as a dog walker, and once or twice a week with Rubbish Rebels collecting trash near playa los muertos and the río cuale.  She and Dave will return in December because they have "fallen in love with Puerto Vallarta."

Another great volunteer who left town is Ian Duncanson, a 15-year old high school student from Mill Valley, California. Ian volunteered twice a week at clinics and twice a week at an orphanage for over a month.  He told his parents that volunteering here had been a "life-changing experience."

EDUCATION PROGRAM- SUMMER VACATION.  SCHOOLS CLOSED.

All vacation weeks in Vallarta mean more trash. Walking dogs on the beach early mornings means encountering plastic bags, bottles, bottle caps, straws, broken-up styrofoam etc.  Even though there are trash containers regularly placed at the edge of the sand, partiers and picnickers often leave their rubbish where they have been sitting or lying.  Much of it is carried out into the bay and then into the Pacific.  So... if you are going on any beach or river walks, please consider taking an oversize garbage bag with you to help this part of the planet.
