SPRING AND SOMERSAULTING CYCLISTS

My favorite place for lunch is Paraiso Moro, a rustic, open-air restaurant on the banks of the Río Cuale in Ejido Jorullo.  One can eat under the palapa roof or sit at a table on the grass right next to the river.  During Semana Santa and Semana Pascua, school children were using the long-roped swing to make high jumps into the water.  Before the summer rains,  rivers are low, and in some places, completely dry.

Next to Paraiso Moro are the offices of the Ejido Jorullo.  I went there after lunch  to advise of the May 10-13 PEACEAnimals clinic a mile or two down the road towards town. An "ejido" is an area of communal land used for agriculture and/or livestock.  Community members farm designated parcels and maintain communal holdings.  During the colonial era and later in the 19th century under President Porfirio Díaz, the expansion of haciendas became a cause of discontent and was one of the main reasons for the 1910 Revolution.  "Tierra y Libertad" ("Land and Liberty") was a slogan used by revolutionary peasants led by Morelos and Zapata.  Finally, in 1934 under President Lázaro Cárdenas, large of amounts of land began to be distributed,  easing the landlessness of Mexican peasants. The "ejido" is a critcal component of the agrarian land reform in Mexico.

In 1992, President Carlos Salinas was responsible for pushing legislation through congress allowing for privatization and sale of ejidal land.  These changes have not shown to have had any benefits for the Mexican people.  Production of land has not increased, but rural proverty has. It is estimated that more than thirty million Mexicans live in misery, not just poverty.   And Mexico, where the cultivation of maize originated, has become a net-importer of maize and other food.

After leaving the ejido offices, I stopped the car when I saw a young girl and boy wearing their school shirts walking along the road.  They were with a medium size,  tan Shepherd-mix whose swaying teats were heavy with milk.  I got out of the car and asked how many puppies the dog had given birth to.  The smiling girl immediately answered, "Seven very pretty ones,   do you want one?"  I gave her a PEACEAnimals card and asked her to come to the clinic scheduled in the nearby colonia of  Buenos Aires the second week of May.   The girl said she would be there.  Volunteers are posting flyers from this colonia all the way up to the popular zip line.

NEW ADDITION IN CENTRO:  Owned by a French couple, "Choco,"  is a chocolate museum above a wonderful chocolate shop.  Chocolates (truffles, candies, bars, teas, etc.) made with organic Criollo and Trinitario beans from Chaipas are made on location and in full view of visitors.  One can also learn how to make chocolate there - from bean to bar.  Also for sale - bath and beauty products made from cacao.    Calle Josef Ortiz de Domínguez 128, directly across from the malecón, next to Bannorte and across the street from the new and very nice artensal store, Macaria.  www.ChocoMuseo.com

PITILLAL - PEACEAnimals clinics returned to this municipality for the second week in a row because of the great demand for free spay/neuter.   (Benjamin, the young man from Chiapas that I had met on the malecón and taken to the first Pitillal clinic with his rescue dog, eventually did return for it).  I wasn´t at the clinic in Pitillal on Thursday when one of the regular animals rescuers brought in five puppies, all of which had their ears and their paws infested with engorged ticks.  The brown tick transmits erlichia,  which brings death by destroying the internal organs. Frank Ohly, star volunteer, doused all infested areas with ectoline, which causes ticks to all fall of within days.

COLONIA VILLAS DEL PUERTO:  We have been to this colonia ("Villas of the Port")  in the past.  It is located near Walmart, about 15 blocks southeast of the the port where luxury cruise ships dock.  This is a modern, lower-income colonia, with drab four-story apartment buildings and small, cement houses.  No villas - but there is a large leafy green, unattended park and small playground.
PARQUE EN COLONIA VILLAS DEL PUERTO

The clinic took place in an empty rental home on a quiet street.  Thank you to Jhovanee Monge for donating the space.  On Wednesday, I delivered 6 lunches from Cheeky Monkey and a suitcase full of vet meds and supplies.  Twenty-nine animals had been registered, which is a strong showing for the first day of a clinic week.  Nine of the animals were young black, white,  and black and white puppies belonging to a small, black dog that had given birth to eleven.  Two puppies were unfortunately adopted before the owner brought the canine family to the clinic for sterilization.  A small brown Chihuahua-mix with a bulging left eye was on the surgery table for sterilization and for removal of its destroyed eye. The vets have been great about extra help without charge (including amputations)  to animals brought to the clinics for spay/neuter.

DENTRO EL TRAILER DE PEACEANIMALS EN EL ESTADIO - DIÁ ESPECIAL EL 30 DE ABRIL

Two PEACEAnimals vets operated out of our red (horse) trailer, while 26 cats and 5 dogs were prepped before surgery and monitored afterwards on tables under a canvas tent.  Leslie playfully marked long strips of tape with open eyes and long lashes to put over the cats´eyes closed eyes while in recovery.  Cats´eyes stay open when anesthetized, so in order to protect the eyes from drying out, either vaseline has to be applied or eyes taped.  Dogs´eyes close.
Our limit had been 30, and happily no one else arrived with a pet after the 31st animal was registered.  Three 8-week old female "Siamese" kittens brought in for spaying were adopted.   Friends of PV Animals was there with four dogs from the Acopio, and two were adopted while I was there.  The Department of Health offered free rabies vaccines for cats and dogs as costumed folkloric dancers performed on a temporary stage.  The lively and well-attended event was sponsored by Capital Pirata 105.9 FM.

SOMERSAULTING CYCLISTS!  EXCITING BMX SPEED RACE COMPETITION:   An estimated 25,000 people gathered in centro in the late afternoon on the same day for the international BMX "speed race" competition.  The 900 meter race, taking about 2 minutes, was composed of three different categories:  downhill; slope style and free style.   The race began at the landmark cross on the very top of el cerro ("the hill"), winding and curving down the very steep hill and stair system.  I live in centro and know the route of the this race very well.  Sections of the path seem almost vertical and the views are spectacular.  It is a climb I used to make with my dogs a couple of times a week, until one of them could do no longer do it because of hip dysplasia.

The thrilling finale to the downhill race was a series of dirt-covered ramps from which bicyclists propelled themselves into what seemed to be impoossibly high jumps, combined with twists, turns and somersaults. Sometimes there were even two bicyclists in the air at the same time.  The cheers for the aerial acrobatics and disappointed groans when a jump was missed were heard blocks away.  The race ended at the malecón in front of the blue and shimmering Bay of Banderas. Winner of the race was a competitor from Czechoslavika and I haven´t seen the name or prize money announced.

UN HOMBRE PROBABLAMENTE  BORRACHO O QUIZÁS SIMPLEMENTE INSENSIBLE SUBIENDO LAS ESCALERAS DE LA CARRERA.  LA MULTITUDE IMMEDIATAMENTE COMENZO A ABUCHEAR Y TIRAR LATAS VACÍAS DE CERVEZA A ÉL.

An apparently inebriated,  grey-haired man in a blue t-shirt walked slowly up the stair system on which the bicyclists were racing down, causing one rider to stop.  The crowd immediately began to boo and throw empty beer cans at him, which had to be picked up before the following rider began his ascent.

Unfortuantely, there was a casualty.  Franz Grossman, a competitor from Austria, crashed into an overhanging ledge of a balcony and was knocked unconscious.   News the following day was that he had suffered serious head injuries and was in an induced medical coma to reduce swelling of the brain.
