BLUE SKIES

The skies are still blue in Puerto Vallarta and the air is still moving.  It is not oppressive October weather with its usual dense grey, steamroom skies.  After the 10 PM fireworks Friday night (if weather permits, we have fireworks nightly),  Vallarta enjoyed a drenching tropical rainstorm accompanied by grumbles of thunder and flashes of lightning.    Saturday was almost balmy (low 80´s), except for the 75% humidity.  Early mornings are always fresh and with beautiful cloud formations.   It´s a perfect time for beach swims.

In Hawaii, I didn´t see any wild dolphins, but as I swam in front of the Outrigger Club one overcast morning, a young monk seal made its way onto the small, empty beach and took a long, undisturbed siesta there. It came back to the same spot the following morning.

Saturday evening was the opening reception for the exhibit of Gil Garea, entitled "Al Astracto Ranchero Al Naquismo Mágico."  This is a very playful title.  The word "abstracto"  ("abstract") for people living in the country is prounced without the "b."  A "naco" ("naquismo" is a superlative, like "machismo") is someone, usually a country person, who has come into some money, but has no culture.  And so this is a playful, earthy exhibit and fun to see.  The opening party was filled with  attractive young Mexicans, with a sprinkling of northerners.  The outdoor space of OPC was tented, where drinks, including topped-off coconuts accompanied by straws, were served.

PALMAR DEL PROGRESO

I walked our dogs in the dark at 6:30 Saturday morning so I could get to el Progreso in time for pet registration.  At 7:30, as I drove past the stadium across the street from the Sheraton, the sun was almost ready to appear from behind the foothills of the Sierra Madres.

POBRE PERRA TAN FLACA CON SU DUEÑA - EL PROGRESO
It was about a 30-minute ride northeast to Palmar del Progreso, a semi-rural colonia with green areas, cinderblock homes and lots of dogs.  The clinic took place in the front part of a home owned by by a slim,  attractive dark-haired man in his late 30´s who showed me his four rescue dogs and one purchased Chihuahua.  He said he had offered his home because it makes him "feel bad" to see so many animals suffering on the streets.  One of the most emaciated dogs I have ever seen was not a street dog.  The female dog arrived in a metal cart with her owner, who said the dog had given birth two months ago and wasn´t eating.  I bought a bag of kibble at a small nearby store,  gave it to the woman and advised her that the dog would die if not fed.

I wasn´t at the clinic on Wednesday when the young female dog with a severe case of non-contagious manage and smelling of decay was found in one of our kennels.  She had come on her own and was  was extremely malnutritioned, dehydrated and covered with fleas and ticks.  And the dog knew that she needed help.  Brischa Borchgrevink, advisory board member of PEACEAnimals and co-owner of LADRA rescue and boarding with her husband Ted, was contacted and arrived immediately.  She named the sweet dog  "Waffles," as she resembled another dog they had rescued and had given that name to.  After a few days of treatment at Dr. Peña´s (224-0319), Waffles will go to a foster home and then for adoption via MexPup (FB) when she recovers.  She will be a very pretty and very grateful pet.
