ALMOST SWIMMING WITH DOLPHINS IN BANDERAS BAY

LA MARINA DE PUERTO VALLARTA

SWIMMING WITH DOLPHINS IN BANDERAS BAY: We left the marina in the late morning and sped northwest towards the the northern tip of the horseshoe-shaped bay in search of dolphins.  We had been promised that we would see them, but whether we would actually swim with them would be completely up to the dolphins.  The boat slowed down as we reached the area where the Ameca river
empties into the bay after its long trip from the mountains.  The water there was densely brown with   sediment and topsoil that were washed down the river from heavy rains.  Sardines and other small fish are also washed down into the bay, and it was there that we saw several dolphins on the surface, including two adults with a baby.
DELFINES EN LA BAHÍA DE BANDERAS
We motored on to the northernmost tip of the bay in hopes of seeing more dolphins in clear waters, and though the ride was gorgeous, we didn´t until we returned to the same area two hours later.  The dolphins were still feeding, but when they dove, they appeared as dark, blurred blobs below the surface.  Nevertheless, we swam there, taking some pleasure in knowing we were sharing space in the bay with dolphins.
BUSCANDO DELFINES EN LA BAHÍA DE BANDERAS

Eduard Lugo, owner of Wildlife Connection Vallarta with his wife Eugenia ("Maru")Rodríguez Vázquez, a marine biologist, has been tracking one of the three pods (approximately 100 in each pod) of bottleneck dolphins for sixteen years.   For information/reservations:   www.wildlifeconnection.com

COLONIA SAN JOSE DEL VALLE :  Born out of six large estates, San Jose del Valle is a small town located in the agrarian municipality of the Bay of Banderas and very close to upscale Nuevo Vallarta.  Because of family visiting and the serious traffic slowdown due to road construction on highway 200 going north, I made the decision to skip San Jose del Valle.  Volunteer Frank Ohly took the photograph for this clinic.

PETS FOR LIFE ONE-DAY CLINIC ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 7-  Thirty-nine cats and dogs were sterilized at this clinic sponsored by the SPCAPV.  Normally more can be done if the sponsor is willing to pay the extra costs.  Unfortunately,  Dr. Poli was not there, so there were two vets instead of three.  Dr. Poli was in the hospital after an emergency apendectomy on Saturday and will not be  returning to work for several weeks.  Dr. Poli is the director of Pets for Life, a Mexican SC (business) and the director of PEACEAnimals.  We will be missing him and hoping for an easy and fast recovery.

DEFINES - CIENTOS MATANZOS CON MUCHA CRUELIDAD PARA COMER Y CIENTOS CAPTURADOS PARA VENDER A LOS DELFINARIOS - CADA AÑO A PARTIR DEL PRIMER DÍA DE SEPTIEMBRE HASTA MARZO -  TAIIJI, JAPON

For me, the word "Japan" has an immediate association with the annual dolphin drive at Taiiji and the cruel slaughter of hundreds of dolphins for human consumption and the capture of hundreds of others for sale to to aquariums and swim with dolphin programs all over the world.  Regarding health reasons for eating these highly intelligent and socialable mammals, it is not advised because of their high mercury level.  Regarding the sale of wild dolphins, prices can be as high as $150,000 per animal.  The dolphin drive in Taiiji begins September 1 and lasts until March.  Brava to Caroline Kennedy, ambassador from the U.S. to Japan, for her politcal tweet that the dolphin herding is "inhumane."

If you are against this slaughter, please protest to the Japanese embassy in your country.  One could mention that Japanese businesses and products will be boycotted.

LA BELLEZA VERDE DE SAN ESTEBAN  -  GREEN BEAUTY

Back to the business of cats and dogs. The PEACEAnimals clinic took place in a small cement community building between a miniature grassy playground and a basketball court.  A two-minute walk from the community center on a muddy dirt road is an astonishly beautiful green area next to the Pitillal river, which flows down from a small village high up in the mountains.

SAN ESTEBAN - POBRESA Y BELLEZA - POVERTY AND BEAUTY

When I arrived at 8:45 AM on Thursday, thirty-one cats and dogs had already been registered.  A friendly couple soon arrived with a small white dog and a crate holding four small kittens, all for sterilization.  Soon afterwards,  a volunteer appropriately named "Angelica" from the nearby neighborhood of Coapinole, arrived in a truck with four dogs in PEACE kennels.  She had borrowed them to go door-to-door offering to drive people´s pets to the clinic.  Angelica smiled broadly as she told me she had brought ten dogs on Wednesday, including a beautiful homeless female Pit Bull with TVT (transmissible veneral tumor).  She will try to raise the funds for her chemotherapy, because  "this is a very noble dog and will fight to live."  Angelica brought six more dogs on Friday.

A young man with bleached blonde hair standing on the side of the road in the green area with his two seven-month old puppies said he didn´t want them to be neutered, but would bring his female dog to the clinic.  He told me she was very sick and bleeding, which meant she undoubtedly was suffering from TVT.   I told him he could bring the dog to the clinic to be euthanized.   When I asked two other men if they would like to come to the clinic with their dogs to have them sterilized, they both asked the same question, "Why, if my dog is a male?"
