A gorgeous 40-minute coastal drive south to the Botanical Gardens means cooler, breezier weather. The Gardens continue to expand, adding more and more beauty to the property. There are several shaded up and down trails, with the names of exotic trees and plants clearly marked. And there is a path down to the Tomatlán river.

Late summer is my favorite time of year in Vallarta. The skies in early evenings often turn steely grey, winds begin to blow, followed by fantastic tropical storms electrifying the night, clearing and cooling the air. Rivers run faster and deeper, children are back in school, there are less tourists, restaurants don´t require a reservation, beaches are deserted and the very busy high season is still two months away. These are quiet, beautiful times.
PITILLAL is the lively municipality twenty minutes north of centro Vallarta. The clinic took place in an empty cement storefront underneath a rather large cement chicken "farm," where roosters were still crowing at 9 AM. Across the street on another rooftop, two large, brown dogs raced back and forth, barking at whomever called up to them. Rooftop dogs are very common sights in Mexico. If they´re lucky, they have some kind of protection from sun and rain.

The turnout at the Pitillal clinic was slightly lower than usual,due to heavy rain on the first day. Leslie, our vet tech, said it was also because of some laziness on the part of the locals. She said that a couple who brought in their dog told her they were glad that the clinic was in their neighborhood because they wouldn´t have wanted to walk more than a few blocks to get it sterilized. A middle-aged woman passing by told Leslie that she lived two blocks away, but couldn´t manage to bring her four dogs to be fixed. Leslie suggested she bring one dog at a time each day, but the woman wasn´t interested.

TUVIMOS LA CLÍNICA - LOS SAUCES PARK IN COLONIA LAS ARALIAS.
This colonia, several blocks east of Costo, is a central location for many pet owners who have vehicles. Sofi Gonzalez, animal advocate, has donated her bodega across from los Sauces park many times during the past few years. The park is green and clean and a shady place for dog walking and playing with children.
There are many other neighborhoods where there are no grassy parks and no vets. These are the disenfranchised areas where torn shower curtains are the front doors to houses with dirt floors. These are the places without street lights and where raw sewage runs down pitted, trash-strewn dirt roads. This is where cats and dogs are everywhere. Very few of the residents in these places have a way to transport their pets to the free clinics. PEACEAnimals is attempting to find locations for our clinics in these poorest of neighborhoods. We have been to some, including Basurero and Volcanes, and we need to go to more.

VALLARTA ADVENTURES ADOPTIONS: On an earlier Vallarta Adventures promenade, Frida´s
photo was included in this blog. Mario Perez and his daughter Genesis met with seven-month old
Frida and her rescuer, Mónica Díaz. The following day, the lovely family adopted the very sweet and pretty puppy, who looks like a Belgian Shepherd. All of Mónica´s rescues are vaccinated, sterilized and treated for fleas, ticks and worms before they go to their new homes.

People interested in adopting were given orange slips of paper with names, telephone numbers and emails. After being contacted, an at-home interview with the specific dog will take place.

It will be observed in Puerto Vallarta with a peaceful protest in front of the stoplight at Francisco Medina Ascencio Ave and Fluvial from 2:30-4:30 PM on Thursday, September 1. Participants are asked to wear red, color of the blood of many hundreds of dolphins that will be slaughtered at this utterly savage and unnecessary hunt. The dolphin drive is against life and beauty and all that is good.
