A DOLPHINARIUM FOR PUERTO VALLARTA?

Puerto Vallarta is not the most beautiful of cities.  There is no colonial architecture, roads are in need of repair, telephone wires remain overhead, and the building of generic condos continues.  What is absolutely beautiful are the jungled foothills of the Sierra Madres,  the winding rivers, the rocky coastline, the deep, horseshoe-shaped Bay of Banderas, the small islands inhabited by pelicans and blue footed boobies, and beyond the bay,  the gleaming Pacific.  The bay is where the humpback whales come to breed and to birth.  It is thrilling to see see their powerful breaches and to hear their great exhalations of air as they surface.  It is not rare to see breaching mantas and sleek, shiny dolphins gliding through the water and leaping for what seems to be pure joy.

DELFINES EN EL MALECÓN EN PUERTO VALLARTA

GICSA,  a real estate development company headquartered in Mexico City, has plans to construct a shopping mall called La Isla. The complex is located a golf ball hit away from the bay, where dolpins enjoy their freedom and where they can often be seen swimming.  Gicsa´s business proposal includes a dolphinarium , and it´s very possible the city will approve this plan.  It will ultimately be the decision of Gicsa whether to go ahead with its plan for a dolphinarium, or find another amusement to lure shoppers to their location.  This is about money, and there is competition from several other large malls in Vallarta.  It should be simmple - build an attractive environment and offer exceptional service and merchandise. There are excellent entertainment alternatives to"interactive" dolphin exhibits. 

LA ISLA - ARTIST´S  RENDERING-

Mexico recently outlawed animals with circuses.  To open up new dolphinariums is on the wrong side of history.  It is against nature and it is crass commercialism. Because of the many news stories and the documentaries, "Blackfish" and "The Cove," there is now excellent information available on what capturing and training dolphins means regarding this highly intelligent (second only to the human) marine mammal.

LAS JUNTAS

PEACEAnimals has been several visits to colonia in the past.  It is a 35 minute drive north, turning east at the stoplight right after Home Depot.  A sign lists the population as 9,305 inhabitants.  It is a dusty colonia filled with small cinderblock and cement houses,  a central plaza (empty every time I´ve been there) with a bandstand that faces the church to the west.

  The delegación is on the northside of the plaza,and our clinics always take place there.  Around the corner is a tortilla factory selling only corn tortillas. As they came out on a conveyer belt, I thought of the episode in "I Love Lucy" of Lucille Ball gobbling chocolates as they sped past her on the same kind of conveyer belt.  I bought a package containing about a dozen-and-a-half,  still warm tortillas for 17 pesos, which equals about $1.00 USD.

 Leslie, our vet tech, said that on Wednesday there were only six animals brought it, which is very disappointing.  When I was there on Friday morning, the clinic was filled with cats and dogs.  One woman brought in twelve pretty tan puppies and their two mamas to be sterilized.  All rescues, they were only six weeks old and none could be sterilized.  The lovely Miriam Rodriguez, formerly from Guadalajara, needs to find homes for them in two weeks after they´ve all been spayed and neutered.  For photos:  mir.i.mimi@hotmail.com or 3314086928

Due to non-sterilization and a lack of education, there are thousands of homeless cats and dogs living on the streets in Puerto Vallarta.  There are many hundreds waiting to be adopted in foster homes,  sanctuaries and the Centro de Acopio.   If you can foster an animal, have found a cat or dog, or would like to adopt a cat or dog, Please check our website on the "resource" tab for names and contacts of refuges, vets, etc. 
  

ADORABLES - MAMÁ Y SU BEBÉ ESPERANDO ESTERILIZACION - LAS JUNTAS - WAITING TO BE SPAYED.

EDUCATION PROGRAM:  This week, Leslie Caratachea, vet tech and education director, made a presentation to 123 students at the 21 de Marzo school in las Juntas.  Leslie he reported that the school was in a very poor neighborhood with a lot of resistance to spay/neuter.  A PEACEAnimals t-shirts specially designed for students was on display, with the promise of one to the first three to arrive at the clinic with a pet on Wednesday and on Saturday.  On Saturday afternoon, Leslie reported that although children came in with pets, none from the 21 de Marzo school did.

En recientes fechas se anunció la construcción del centro comercial La Isla en la Ciudad de Puerto Vallarta, que es un concepto comercial con sucursales en Cancún y Acapulco. Desgraciadamente su propuesta comercial incluye un delfinario construido y manejado por la empresa Vallarta Adventures.
Como miembro de la sociedad vallartense y haciendo eco del sentir general respecto a los espectáculos con cetáceos  (delfines), se invita a la sociedad civil para solicitarle al Municipio de Puerto Vallarta que no autorice la construcción y operación de dicho delfinario.
Documentales como “Blackfish” o “The Cove” han dado a conocer la terrible situación de estrés y sufrimiento que este tipo de instalaciones ocasiona a los cetáceos (delfines y orcas), y es la razón principal por la que sitios como Sea World están en el ojo del huracán respecto a este tema. Se ha demostrado ampliamente que los delfines tienen una inteligencia superior, y es cruel someterlos al cautiverio para diversión de los turistas.
 Algunos datos de vida silvestre de los cetáceos:
·         Viven en familia.
·         Se reúnen en grupos mayores con fines de convivencia, para fortalecer los lazos, como protección, y para reproducirse.
·         Tienen cultura. Los adultos les transmiten conocimientos a sus crías, como la cacería en grupo.
·         Usan y crean herramientas para lograr sus objetivos de caza.
·         Se reconocen como individuos.
·         Protegen a los miembros de su manada.
·         Se comunican con un lenguaje complejo.

Estos son sólo unos ejemplos de cuán estructurada está su sociedad. La vida social sólo se presenta en grupos animales con demostrada inteligencia, como los primates no humanos de los que evolucionó el hombre, que también se cataloga como un animal social.
Puerto Vallarta es un lugar privilegiado por la exuberancia de naturaleza que lo rodea. Siendo éste su principal atractivo, debería ser un destino turístico enfocado en la admiración y el cuidado de la misma, donde se conviva en armonía con ella. Es fácil ver delfines en libertad en nuestra bahía. ¡No hay necesidad de restringir su observación a un tanque de agua!
La Declaración Universal de los Derechos de los Animales de la ONU y la UNESCO establecen, entre otros, que todo animal tiene derecho al respeto, y que toda privación de libertad, incluso aquélla que tenga fines educativos, es contraria a este derecho. Los tanques con delfines quebrantan los derechos de los animales.
Por otro lado, la Ley de Protección y Cuidado de los Animales en el Estado de Jalisco contempla, en su Artículo 30, que está prohibido realizar los siguientes  actos:
XIX: La posesión o venta de animales cuya especie esté considerada en peligro de extinción o bajo protección especial, de acuerdo a los ordenamientos en la materia.
La especie más utilizada en los delfinarios está catalogada bajo Protección Especial por la NOM Ecol 059 2010: Delphinidae (Tursiops truncatus), delfín nariz de botella o tursión o tonina. Pr (Protección especial)  no endémica
XXV. Todo hecho, acto u omisión que pueda causar dolor, sufrimiento, poner en peligro la vida del animal o que afecte su bienestar.
El daño físico y emocional que ocasiona el cautiverio a estas especies ha sido documentado ampliamente (documentales como “The Cove” y “Blackfish”).
¡Somos privilegiados de poder convivir día a día con los delfines en libertad, y es nuestro derecho y nuestra obligación protegerlos!
Invitamos a todos aquellos que respeten la vida silvestre a unirse a esta causa. Caminemos hacia delante, junto con los países más sensibles y educados, para resolver esta problemática. Huatulco actualmente está luchando contra un delfinario, y ahora le toca también a Puerto Vallarta.
¡No permitamos más delfines en cautiverio!
