BREEZY AND BALMY

The breezy weather means sweaters or wraps in the early mornings and in the evenings.  Temperatures rang from the mid- 70´s to the mid-80´s.  The seven rivers of Vallarta run low and slow, and the white foam of high waves splash over the malecón and knock swimmers down on the beaches.   Strong waves crash over the rocks on the beach next to the malecón and make a rumble as they roll back into the bay.  Las Gemelas beach, even on Sundays during the winter, is a quiet place and the white powdery sand is rock free.  The water is clear, clear clear and temperatures are in the mid-70´s.
PLAYA LAS GEMELAS ("THE TWINS" BEACH)

Bucerías, which means "place of divers," is a small beach resort town half-way between Puerto Vallarta and Sayulita, another popular beach resort.  The charming town has cobblestone streets, a central plaza, a small church and an eighteen-mile stretch of beach.  The area, known as the Riviera Nayarit, is home and part-time home to a number of northerners,

STERILIZATIONS in BUCERIAS JANUARY 13-16:  Female dogs:  72; Male dogs: 25; Female cats: 46; Male cats: 15  TOTAL:  158!!!
DR. POLI - CLÍNICA EN BUCERIAS

DONATIONS at clinic in Bucerias January 13-16:  Organizers of the event put up a separate donation box and have not yet reported monies received for PEACEAnimals clinics.  Dr. Poli, director of PEACEAnimals and Pets for Life, is the person regularly in charge of  donations and expenses for clinics every week to Amy Welch, treasurer, and to me. Amount of clinic donations will be reported in the next blog.

This clinic was sponsored by Ken Dahl´s family foundation, which gave a grant of $2,000 USD  to PEACEAnimals,  earmarked for Bucerias.  Sue Fornoff and her husband Harold Sokolove were the main organizers.  Monies they raised via GoFundMe (total not received, but last count was a bit more than $300 USD) paid for the three banners they had made, flyers and truck and driver making megaphone announcements.

Another clinic for Bucerias, sponsored by Lucy Muniz and Gil Gevins, will be scheduled for this summer.

All pet registration forms with signatures of owners or rescuers are submitted by Dr. Poli to the local department of health, with copies to PEACEAnimals.

ISLA CUALE PETS FOR LIFE ONE-DAY CLINIC SPONSORED BY SPCAPV ON 1/10:

STERILIZATIONS:  62 cats and dogs

DONATIONS:  1,710 PESOS

Unfortunately some pet owners had to be turned away.  After registrations were closed at the at 10 AM, a couple arrived with a feral female cat.  It had been difficult for them to trap and the people had driven an hour to get to the clinic.  The cat was accepted for surgery and will be released back where found.
SORAYA DE PURO GATO Y SU HIJO, DIEGO - CLÍNICA DE UN DÍA PAGADA POR LA SPCAPV EN LA ISLA CUALE -

A visiting vet from the U.S. helped at this clinic and made the suggestion that all cats arrive in kennels with two white towels wrapped around them and that a donation be mandatory.  Mexico has a poverty rate of 65-70%, which precludes the ability of most pet owners to purchase kennels.  The majority of felines arriving at PEACEAnimals clinics are brought to us in bird cages, cardboard boxes, food crates, backpacks,  purses, and wrapped up in towels.  Dogs are often brought to us with just a rope or chain link around their necks.  Tourists see the beaches, restaurants and shops.  They don´t see the impoverished neighborhoods and towns in which PEACEAnimals often holds mobile clinics.  We are grateful that pet owners are becoming more and more aware of the importance of spay/neuter.  People who who can afford to donate usually do, even the children.  As the people coming to clinics already own the animal and care enough to have it sterilized, we assume they place value on their pet.
PURO GATO EN ADOPCIÓN EN LA CLÍNICA DEL 9 DE ENERO EN LA ISLA CUALE - TODAVÍA ESTÁ EN ADOPCIÓN - CONTACTO:  PURO GATO POR FB

Pets for Life, a Mexican SC (business), is the vet team with which PEACEAnimals has a work arrangement.  We are guaranteed 30 surgery weeks (4 days) of  clinics annually.  Pets for Life is available for hire the remainder of the year.  To date, this has worked out to be 39 surgery weeks annually for PEACEAnimals and 9 surgery week clinics annually for Pets for Life, either in Oaxaca or in Nayarit.  The Isla Cuale project is a monthly one with a cost of 4,500 pesos for a thirty-animal clinic. If more than that are sterilized,  extra costs are added and can be confirmed by Pets for Life.

On Tuesday, Soraya of Puro Gato received a message saying there was a pretty pale grey cat by the Hortensia Hotel, which is located near the Isla Cuale.  She picked up the discarded cat that had been someone´s pet.   Dr. Manuel Peña of Mascota´s offered to spay the cat without charge, and the manager of the hotel was persuaded by Soraya to keep the cat.    Happy Ending for "Hortensia."

ESPERANDO CIRUGÍA EN BUCERIAS

Due to non-sterilization and a lack of education, there are thousands of homeless cats and dogs living on the streets in Puerto Vallarta.  There are many hundreds waiting to be adopted in foster homes,  sanctuaries and the Centro de Acopio.   If you can foster an animal, have found a cat or dog, or would like to adopt a cat or dog, Please check our website on the "resource" tab for names and contacts of refuges, vets, etc.

In kennels with two white towels...........TOO funny! What is wrong with beige towels I ask? Some of our volunteers want GAUZE for ear cleaning - this also horrifies me! I have become almost as frugal as Poli.
