DANCING IN THE RAIN

MI BAILADOR FAVORITO

Across the street from the church of Our Lady of Guadalupe where a mass was being held, one could hear the sounds of a different kind of music.  The city´s brass band was playing a sensual rumba in the plaza.  It was raining, but it was a very light rain, and people were enthusiastically dancing in it.  Young couples danced together and with their small children, women of all ages danced together and some people danced alone.
Older couples, the men dressed in starched cotton shirts and ranchero hats, danced with their wives,  who wore flirty skirts and high heels.   Impossible not to smile as the crowd shimmied and swayed and twirled to the music.

Last rainy Saturday was the first time that I hadn´t seen sixteen-piece band, always dressed impeccably in white,  playing in the bandstand.  Perhaps for more protection against the rain, they were playing in the outdoor and totally protected corridor of the former city hall. They were directly across from the bandstand, where a small crowd cheered them on.
If you like to dance or simply enjoy listening to wonderful Latin music, go to the plaza on a Tuesday or Saturday at six in the evening.  It is being part of the "Old México" that one doesn´t see enough of in Puerto Vallarta.
EL MALECÓN ATRÁS DE LA PLAZA
September and October, usually the two hottest and most humid months of the year, have been surprisingly pleasant.  The skies remain clear, the air moves, and rain continues to fall every few days.  Although temperatures and humidity are high, it doesn´t feel like a hot, wet blanket is hovering over the town.

MOJONERAS:  This neglected, dusty colonia is about a 30-minute drive northeast of centro.  One passes the airport, turns right at the Corona sign on the highway and heads towards the foothills.  In years past, a clinic in Mojoneras meant walking and driving around the neighborhood asking people to please accompany us back to the mobile clinic with their pets.
MOJONERAS
There was great resistance on the part of not only the men, who wanted their male dogs to be "intact," but also on the part of women, who wanted their female cats and dogs to have babies.  It´s very different now.  When I arrived at 9 AM on Saturday, there was a long line of people waiting with their pets.
MOJONERAS

At Poli´s request, cat and dog owners made separate lines.  Leslie registered cats and I registered dogs.  Cats are operated on first, as it takes them longer to come out of anesthesia.  Pet owners are told to come back at 1 for their dogs and at 2 for their cats.
LESLIE CON JUPHTAUPH, 9 AÑOS, QUIÉN  AYUDABA CADA DÍA DE LA CLÍNICA EN MOJONERAS

A nine-year old boy named Juphtauph de la Rosa was there every day to help put cats and dogs in kennels.  Teenager Samantha Angelica Sicciros Lopez was there on Saturday and asked me if she could watch surgeries.  She wants to be a vet.
ANGELICA OBSERVANDO CIRUGÍAS EN MOJONERAS.  QUIERE SER VETERINARIA.

As I was leaving the clinic, I saw the same man dressed in a red t-shirt and red baseball cap who had brought in his dog "Canela" 30 minutes before.   He was dragging a small brown and white dog down the street by a cord. This sweet and smiling man who was minus two front teeth said he had wrapped the yellow cord around the homeless dog´s muzzle to prevent her from biting.  Although Dr. Poli had cut off the registrations, he made an exception and asked Leslie to tranquilize the frightened dog and prepare her for surgery.
TRAENDO PERRITA DE LA CALLE PARA CIRUGÍA EN MOJONERAS
Only one pet was turned away on Saturday.  A nice couple brought in their tan Pit Bull mix that had given birth to a litter two weeks before.  The waiting time is always eight weeks, as the uterus is fragile until then and could rupture during surgery.  This not only spared a desperate future for the female dog and her puppies, but saved her from contacting TVT (transmissible venereal tumor), which would have killed her.

STERILIZATIONS in Mojoneras - October 7-10
Male Dogs - 17; Female dogs - 30; Male cats - 34; Female cats - 33
TOTAL:  114

All pet registration forms with signatures of owners or rescuers are submitted by Dr. Poli to the local department of health, with copies to PEACEAnimals.
