FAVORITE WALK

LEAVING BOCA DE TOMÁTLAN

My favorite walk here is from the village of Boca de Tomatlán, where the river runs down from the foothills of the Sierra Madres into the Bay of Banderas, to las Ánimas (“the spirits”) , a restaurant-lined beach.  Boca, in a Gaugin-like setting,

LOOKING AT BOCA DE TOMATLÁN FROM THE TRAIL

is about 30-minutes driving time from Puerto Vallarta.  The walk is at times a strenuous uphill climb on steps carved out of rock.  When there aren´t stony climbs, the trail is a gorgeous, winding trail on a dirt or stone path overlooking the bay or next to the bay, through the jungle with screetching parrots overhead,  a descent to gorgeous Colomitos beach

COLOMITOS BEACH - HALF-WAY TO LAS ÁNIMAS FROM BOCA

for a heavenly swim, crossing small beaches and before arriving at  “el caballo,”a deserted long,   coconut tree- lined beach.  After el caballo, there is a short walk on a public access cement pathway that runs through the Hotelito Mio property.

As Mexico is a very polite society, I was surprised last Sunday when an employee standing on the path wouldn´t answer our “buenos diás” called out twice as we approached.  When I asked the man if he had heard me say hello,  he pointed south to las Ánimas, a five-minute walk away, saying that “the beach is there.”  Walking away with our three dogs, he shouted after us to “put the dogs on leashes.”   This is not a requirement on any of the beaches from Boca to las Ánimas, but there are four beaches in Puerto Vallarta where dogs are not allowed off leash.  After a delicious ceviche lunch on the beach at las Ánimas, we took a water taxi back to Boca, passing the dazzlingly beautiful route we had taken a few hours before.

YOUNG OWNER WITH "PIRATA"  AT LA FLORESTA CLINIC

A sweet Boxer-mix female dog brought to the clinic was suffering from TVT (transmissible venereal tumor), which can be cured if the owner has funds for chemotherapy.  We gave him the name of the vet who gives discount rates for rescues.  His cost per chemo treatment is 200 pesos.   Two dogs at the clinic were in heat,  a surprise to their owners, who hadn´t noticed the physical changes.

DR. POLI AT LA FLORESTA CLINIC

NEEDS HOME:  “Cabezon”  ("Big Head"), the young, handsome, homeless, hound dog in el Tuito.  When I saw him two weeks at the clinic two weeks ago, he was limping and unable to put full weight on one of his front legs.  I was told this week that he had been sleeping next to a car, which ran over his paw when it drove off.   Cabezon is at risk for being hurt again.  One of his ears has been cut off, probably someone´s idea of entertainment.  Hound dogs are intelligent, affectionate, sensitive animals.  Cabezon is a noble  dog that has suffered.  He needs a home.  From Kai Doyle, part-time resident of el Tuito:

"CABEZON" IS A STREET DOG LIVING IN EL TUITO.  NECESITA HOGAR.
“Cabezon is quite the character. When I left my house yesterday…  there he was, lying in front…I petted him & he whimpered a bit & then´howled´ in appreciation. He followed me to the plaza,  but I lost him when he got distracted by people eating outdoors at the Mariachi restaurant. He is SO smart. He totally recognizes all of us locals who dealt with him at the clinic. We all stop by to visit him at the papeleria where he hangs out. What a great dog!”

If you would like to adopt Cabezon, I will happily drive to el Tuito and bring him back.  Please let me know if you would like to meet Cabezon, or contact Saashi, who lives in el Tuito and knows admire him:   cell number is 322-133-9317

NEED RESCUING:  Thousands of cats and dogs living on the streets and  dozens of cats and dogs at the Acopio, the no-kill pound.  The Centro de Acopio is open Monday-Saturday from 8 AM-2 PM.  Telephone number is 293-3690.  For shelters,  please check PEACEAnimals website.  Website also contains information on recommended vets, adoptions, etc.  www.peaceanimals.org

CONTINUES TO IMPROVE:  "Kira," the sweet dog living in a parking lot and rescued by Jorge Ceballos.  Kira is being treated for TVT (transmissible veneral tumor) with chemotherapy.  Jorge reports that she is the tumors are shrinking, she is eating well and has gained 8 kilos since he has been caring for her.  Thank you to those who have taken funds to Dr. Peña for her vet care.  Kira still needs more financial help and will need a home.
