WHAT ARE THE SONGS THE WHALES SING?

In the distance, we could see the very large, white flukes of a humpback whale rise out of the dark blue water and then crash down on the surface, causing an huge spray of white.  We were in an EcoTours Zodiac about 60 meters from a female humpback whale and her two-week old calf.  Several minutes later, the male joined the mother and baby.  The three of them curved up and down in the water, their white pectoral fins looking pale green just below the surface. After watching the mama and baby and the new escort, we sped off to another location in the bay where whales were reported as having been seen.  And though we didn´t see more whales, we heard them singing  and whooping far below us via a hydrophone dropped into the water.  And what do the songs say that whales sing?

The eight-year old boy walked across the dusty, narrow road in Ixtapa pulling a small female German Shepherd mix on a lasso.  His parents weren´t home so he didn´t want to have her spayed without their permission. He unloosed the dog, who immediately  skittered back into the cement house.  Francisco started twirling his lasso rodeo-style in the shade.  He said his name was Francisco and that his parents were both working, but his grandmother would be arriving soon.  I asked if he would help me find some dogs or cats for sterilization and off we went.  Many of the pets we saw had already sterilized by PEACE and there were promises to come to the clinic the next day.  I only had 60 centavos in my pants pocket and gave it to Francisco, thanking him for his help.   His smiling grandmother was standing in front of the open door when we arrived back at Francisco´s humble home.  Without saying anything, Francisco handed her the sixty centavos.  The grandmother was holding a plump, blue-eyed, golden-haired baby.  I asked if the baby´s parents were fair.  She said no, that the look was something the Spanish could take credit for.   After his grandmother signed the permission sheet, Francisco lassoed his dog and we walked across the street to the clinic, where he chose a donated used collar and leash for his timid dog.

Although this municipality on the road to San Sebastian was papered with 400 flyers, it was a low turn-out.  Although numbers are seldom below 90,  tt is always disappointing to the clinic team when their anticipated goal of 90-100 cats and dogs is not reached.  It will be some time before the clinic returns to Ixtapa.

John Brooks (who lives in Newfoundland) - $300 CA for animal rescue.  Part of this donation was spent on a vet bill for“Amelia,” who was rescued by Amelia Vega.  The dog was taken to Dr. Peña and treated for fractures to her hip and paw and is under treatment for erlichia and anaplasma.  Vet bill amounted to 1,710 pesos ($129 USD).

SOS:  A pretty, two-year old female dog that has lived all her life under cars in the parking lot of the regional hospital was spotted by Jorge Ceballos.  

"KIRA" RESCUED AND IN TREATMENT  RESCATADA EN EN TRATAMIENTO

Jorge,   who rescues dozens of dogs and finds good  homes for all of them,  took her to Dr. Peña for examination  and tests.  Kira is suffering from TVT (transmissible venereal tumor), the sexually transmitted disease that is widespread in Mexico. Kira has tumors on her genitals and a small tumor on one of her eyes.

She has had one session of chemotherapy, which was paid for by the SPCAPV.   Each session costs 200 pesos, which is very affordable compared to the U.S. and Canada. I delivered 200 pesos from John Brooks´ donation for Kira´s second session. Dr. Peña plans are for two or three sessions and if the tumors are reduced, treatment will be continued.  If not, Kira will be euthanized.  In the meantime, she is being lovingly cared for by Jorge in his home. Dogs and cats have no way of practicing safe sex or birth control.  It is up to humans to help them.   Kira is an innocent victim.  She was born to suffer, as are thousands of cats and dogs here in the area of Puerto Vallarta.  

Another SOS was sent out earlier this week by Friends of PV Animals advising that there were only two days left of food for the 25 cats and 40 dogs at the Acopio.  The Centro de Acopio was built several years ago for the express purpose of killing stray cats and dogs.  The government´s only legal requirement regarding the feeding of collected and turned-in animals was to give a two week supply of pet food for the entire year.  Under the new administration, the Acopio acts as a humane shelter rather than a pound.    If you care to donate:  www.friendsofpvanimals.com/donate.

A lo lejos, pudimos ver las enormes aletas de una ballena jorobada que se levantaban del agua de color pizarra y luego se las estrellaban sobre la superficie, causando un enorme chorro de blanco. Estábamos en una Zodiac de EcoTours unos 60 metros de una ballena jorobada y su bebé de dos semanas de edad.  Varios minutos más tarde, el macho se unió a la madre y el bebé. Los tres se curvaban  hacia arriba y abajo en el agua, sus aletas blancas que se parecían verde pálido justo debajo de la superficie. Después de ver la mamá y el bebé y el nuevo escolta, fuimos rápidamente a otra ubicación en la bahía, donde se reportaban visto varias ballenas.  Y aunque no vimos más ballenas, las escuchamos cantando debajo de nosotros por un hidrófono que se bajó en el agua. ¿Y qué quiren decir las canciones de las ballenas?

En Ixtapa, el niño de ocho años de edad cruzó la polvorienta carretera estrecha tirando con un lazo una pequeña mezcla pastor alemán.  Sus padres no estaban en casa para que él no quería tenerla  esterilizada sin su permiso. Él desatados el perro, que inmediatamente se deslizó de nuevo en la casa de ladrillo blanco. El niño comenzó a girar su lazo al estilo rodeo en la sombra. Dijo que su nombre era Francisco y que sus padres estaban trabajando , pero que su abuela iba a llegar pronto. Le pregunté si él me ayudaría en encontrar algunos perros o gatos para esterilización y los  comenzamos a buscar.  Muchos de los animales que vimos ya habían esterilizado por PEACE y habián promesas por venir a la clínica al día siguiente. Yo tenía sólo 60 centavos en mi  bolsillo del y los dí  Francisco, dándole las gracias por su ayuda. Su abuela sonriente estaba de pie delante de la puerta abierta cuando llegamos al humilde casa de Francisco. Sin decir nada , Francisco le entregó los sesenta centavos. La abuela estaba sosteniendo a un bebé regordete  de ojos azules y pelo dorado . Le pregunté si los padres del bebé fueron  claros.  Ella dijo que no, que era algo para que el conquistadores podrían responsabilidad.  Después de que su abuela firmó la hoja de permiso, Francisco lazó su perrita timida y caminamos por la calle hasta la clínica, donde eligió un collar y una correa utilizados que nos habían donados.

ESTERILIZACIONES EN IXTAPA el 12 hasta el 15 de febrero:

perros - 8 ; perras - 28 ; gatos: 14 ; gatas – 14  Total: 64 

Además embarazos terminados para 2 gatas con 4 fetos cada uno y 1 gata con 3 fetos.

Aunque este municipio en la carretera a San Sebastián estaba empapelada con 400 flyers, fue una baja participación . Siempre es disilusionante para el equipo de la clínica cuando no se alcanza la meta prevista de 90 a 100 perros y gatos. Pasará algún tiempo antes de que la clínica vuelva a Ixtapa.

SOS : Una perra de dos años de edad que estaba viviendo bajo los coches en el estacionamiento del hospital regional fue visto por Jorge Ceballos. Jorge , que rescata a docenas de perros y encuentra buenos hogares para todos ellos , la llevó al Dr. Peña para un examen y pruebas. Kira está sufriendo de TVT (tumor venéreo transmisible ) , la enfermedad de transmisión sexual que  existe mucho en México. Kira tiene tumores en sus genitales y un pequeño tumor en uno de sus ojos. Ella ha tenido una sesión de quimioterapia, la cual fue pagada por la SPCAPV . Cada sesión cuesta 200 pesos , que es muy asequible en comparación con los tratamientos en los EE.UU. y en Canadá. Entregué 200 pesos de la donación de John Brooks para el segundo tratamiento para Kira . El plane del Dr. Peña es para dos o tres sesiones y si los tumores se reducen , se continuará con el tratamiento. Si no, Kira esterá sacrificada. Mientras tanto , ella se está amorosamente cuidada por Jorge en su casa. Por favor, ayuda con donaciones para sus tratamientos médicos y una dieta especial. Los fondos pueden ser llevados al Dr. Peña - Mascotas - Melchor Ocampo 109 - a una cuadra al sur del centro de Plaza Caracol - 335 – 0319.

Los perros y gatos no tienen manera de practicar el sexo seguro ni control de la natalidad . Toca a los humanos ayudarlos. Kira es una víctima inocente. Ella nació para sufrir, al igual que miles de gatos y perros aquí en el área de Puerto Vallarta.

Otra SOS fue enviado a los principios de esta semana por Amigos de PV Animales advirtiendo que sólo había dos días que quedaban de  alimento para los 25 gatos y 40 perros en el Acopio . El Centro de Acopio fue construido hace varios años con el propósito expreso de matar a los gatos y perros callejeros .  El único requisito legal del gobierno con respecto a la alimentación para los animales recogidos y traídos es donar dos semanas de alimento el año para las mascotas.
