MEZCALITOS - This was only our second visit to the very small, attractive town 45-minutes driving time north from centro Vallarta.
Located off highway 200, it is next door to upscale Nuevo Vallarta, where many northerners live full or part-time. Streets in Mezcalito are cobblestone, houses are mostly cement and well maintained and there are plenty of trees. There is even a small hotel. The clinic took place at Jardin Azul (Blue Garden), a lovely, private event location inside a white-walled compound with small playground, swimming pool and grassy picnic area.

On Wednesday, our first clinic-week day, Dr. Poli was the only vet and managed to spay and neuter twenty-five cats and dogs. Pet owners included a man who brought in five of his ten young rescue cats. One of them was apparently blind because the rescuer hadn´t had the money to treat an eye infection when it was a kitten.

Poli also consulted with Luis, a young man from el Tuito (an hour´s drive north of Vallarta) who had brought in a dog his Belgian Shepherd had come home with. The young, beautiful dog had an open, raw tumor on its chest and another one under his healthy looking coat.

After an exam, Poli confirmed it was not TVT (transmissible venereal tumor) and recommended a biopsy. If results are negative for cancer, Dr. Poli will donate surgical removal of the tumors. If positive, no surgery, as tumors will return.

A small woman with no teeth walked up to me, saying, "I would like to talk to you about a problem I have." She had brought in four dogs and has twenty more rescue dogs at her home. The problem: She leaves for Guadalajara the middle of the month, will be gone five days and has no one to feed her dogs. I asked if some of her neighbors could help. "No. They all hate me because of the dogs."
