We left Puerto Vallarta in a power boat the week-end before last, and headed in the direction of the Marieta Islands. It had only been thirty minutes out on the bay when we saw the first humid spouts in the distance. Motoring towards them, we stopped 200 yards away and watched the thrilling sight of three or four adult whales breaching and dorsal fin slapping.

At one point, the whales all submerged and disappeared and we assumed they had swum away. Then suddenly, there was an explosion of air and the head of one of the whales appeared not more than six feet from where I was sitting at the back of the boat. As I gave out a surprised yell and fumbled for my camera, the whale slowly sank beneath the water. In my excitement and astonishment, all I have of that unexpected and beautiful moment are photographs of my hand, the sky and the boat deck.
Our five hours on Banderas Bay included at least ten whales, curious dolphins that swam around the boat, others that ignored us, plus a couple of mating turtles. The anatomy of a male turtle was a surprise.
It was an utterly dazzling day.
ON THE MALECÓN the giant artificial Christmas tree is still standing and on the adjacent beach only one sand sculpture remains. High waves have taken down all the others and have tossed rocks and sand onto the lower walkways of the malecón.
POISONINGS: Silvia Álvarez, coordinator of the Animal Welfare offices of Vallarta, reported that on Tuesday morning, 14 dogs, 20 birds and a cat died of poisoning in the Campo Verde colonia.
This is an excruciating painful and slow death and doesn´t solve the enormous problem of overpopulation of cats and dogs in Mexico. The poison had been placed in the garbage, where owned and homeless animals search for food. Police collected and carried away the bagged bodies. It may take the death of a child for rat poison to be outlawed in towns and cities. Except for farm areas, cats and rat traps work very well re eliminating rats. Unfortunately, rat poison seems to be the most effective means to protect crops from vermin.

Los animales no necesitan tener una camada para completar su ciclo vital, puesto que no existe una relación consciente con la reproducción como parte necesaria de su bienestar emocional.
