SEMANA SANTA/SEMANA PASCUA

LA IGLESIA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE GUADALUPE

Semana Santa ("Holy Week") includes the last week of Lent, Good Friday and Palm Sunday.  The saleswoman at a bakery commented that a more appropriate name for  Semana Santa would be "Semana Cerveza" ("Beer Week").
EL RÍO CUALE - SEMANA SANTA
JARDÍNES BOTÁNICOS DE PUERTO VALLARTA
Although tourists and locals filled the beautiful beaches and low, slow flowing rivers, and beer was much in evidence, there were quiet places of beauty to visit - always the Botanical Gardens and the jungle walk from Boca de Tomatlán to las Ánimas.
SIESTA TIME AT THE BOTANICAL GARDENS

END OF THE HIGH SEASON - By the end of May, snow birds and part-time residents will have left Puerto Vallara and rains will begin in June. Next Saturday, April 29th, is the last Farmers/Handicraft Market until November.  The Biblioteca´s smaller, similar market will stay open until June.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF PEACEANMALS:  We are grateful and glad to announce two new members -Trisha Aljoe and Ofelia Osuna McHugh.   Both women are talented,  passionate, experienced and dedicated animal advocates and full-time residents of Puerto Vallarta.   http://www.peaceanimals.org/about/board_of_directors

LAILA - The extremely emaciated female Pit Bull rescued by Vicky Boyd and diagnosed with erlichia and anaplasma died Monday morning,April 10th,  at the Centro Medico Veterinario in Puerto Vallarta.   Vicky, who was in the U.S.,  gave  permission to have Laila cremated.  The hearts of many people had been touched by the photograph of a skelatal dog lying in the dirt at her owner´s home.  Laila died because her owners, out of ignorance, poverty and/or extreme disregard, didn´t take the necessary measures to save Laila.  It was a simple matter of removing ticks..   Laila´s suffering and death were completely unnecessary.
LAILA - RESCATADA PERO FUÉ DEMASIADO TARDE PARA SALVARLA.  SE MURIÓ DE ERLICHIA.

On April 17th, Vicky made the decision to pay all vet costs for Laila and requested funds raised be used for extreme dog rescue cases. Autopsy results confirmed Laila´s liver had been destroyed by erlichia.  Ninety percent of street dogs in Vallarta have this tick-transmitted disease, which  attacks the organs and cuases death unless treated..  The treatment is simple - a pill for 30 days.  PEACEAnimals is committed to help end the suffering of animals.   A mass spay/neuter program does the most good for the most animals.  Education is critical  PEACEAnimals provides both programs.

Total raised for Laila´s vet care:  $960 USD less PayPal transaction charges.
PayPal has a specific rate schedule set aside for verifed 501c3 charities of 2.2% plus 30 cents if your volume is up to $100,000/month; over that, the rate decreases to 1.9% plus 30 cents.
POR EL ARTISTA PIPO BROCKMANN (GALERÍA CONTEMPO)

The remaining funds have been placed in a "Laila" SOS account.  There are thousands of street animals in Vallarta.  They are born to suffer.  Cats and dogs starve, are injured,  maimed and killed by vehicles, are sick, abused and abandoned.   And they continue to breed.

BEACH DOG WITH 10 PUPPIES IN BOCA DE TOMATLÁN - Karla de la Pena, who had alerted the acopio to the mama dog in Boca,  went to see the pretty, young mama at the acopio.  She was told that eight of the ten puppies had died because their first-time mother didn´t know how to care for them.  The two remaining puppies are thriving.  All three canines are for adoption.  Call:  293-3690

MAMA PERRA RESCATADA DE BOCA CON SUS 10 BEBÉS.  SOLAMENTE 2 SOBREVIVIERON Y TODOS ESTÁN EN ADOPCIÓN EN EL CENTRO DE ACOPIO - 293 3690

PITILLAL CLINIC:  There were so many animals at a recent clinic in Pitillal that Dr. Poli scheduled two return visits.  Location was at the same - in the former large cement market for the municipality.

LA PERRITA DE GRACIE... VA A TENER TRATAMIENTO DE QUIMOTERAPÍA POR TVT- QUE ES CANCER.

Serendipitous moment - I happened to be at the clinic when a worried looking woman with short, white hair and sweet face was standing with a very gentle black female Pit Bull whose teats showed that she had been a recent mother.  Gracie told me that the formerly abused dog had been given to her in January and soon gave birth to seven puppies - six females and one male.  The male died and Gracie took the mother and her six surviving puppies at eight weeks of age to be spayed and found homes for all pups, even though people complained that they didn´t want a sterilized puppy.  Our vets had just given Gracie the bad news that her rescue dog had TVT - transmissible venereal tumor.  The dog had vaginal bleeding and small tumors around her genitals.  TVT is malignant and fatal without treatment.  Gracie, who had driven at least 75 minutes from el Tuito where she lives, was concerned not only about the cost of chemotherapy, but the weekly expense of gasoline, which would be 400 pesos.
GRACIE CON SU PERRITA RESCATADA QUE TIENE TVT - CLÍNICA EN PITILLAL
I spoke with Dr. Poli, who said he could get the chemo meds at a wholesale price of 200 pesos each and that the dog would need five sessions.  Cure rate is very high.  Gracie wept tears of relief and joy.  A friend of hers will keep the dog for five weeks in Pitillal and the new PEACEAnimals "Laila" SOS fund will pay for the chemotherapy treatments, which will amount to approximately 1,000 pesos (current fluctuating exchange rate is about 19 pesos to the U.S. dollar).
BENJAMÍN DE CHIAPAS CON PERRITO RESCATADO QUE LLEVAMOS A LA CLÍNICA EN PITILLAL  NO REGRESÓ PARA EL DULCE PERRITO DE 8 MESES.  EL PERRITO MEZCLA LABRADOR NECESITA HOGAR.

Another good moment - Walking our dogs on the malecón early Friday morning I saw a young Mexican man with a very pretty, young Lab mix.  I asked him if he would like to have the dog neutered free.  Yes!  Benjamín is from Chiapas, the southernmost state in Mexico and the poorest.  He has found work here cleaning houses, but camps out on the beach at night.  Benjamin found the dog and has been caring for it, but hopes to find a real home for the dog.  We walked back to our home and I gave the three-month old dog and Benjamin a ride to the clinic in Pitillal and money for food and bus fare back to the beach.

Note:  On Sunday, there was a FB posting saying this dog had not been picked up by his "owner," who had given me a non-working phone number.  This rescued and then abandoned sweet eight-month old male puppy needs a solution.

DAY OF DOLPHINS

Ten minutes after leaving Boca de Tomatlán in a panga, we began to see dolphins.  It wasn´t possible to see them swimming below us because the water in Banderas Bay was a deep emerald green, but there were many shiny, sleek dark grey dolphins on top.  Some were swimming in close tandem with
their small calves, while other individuals were making graceful, curving leaps out of the water before gliding across the glittering bay.
We motored to los arcos ("the arches") national marine park, the rocky outcroppings where waves have carved out arches.  High above us, fluffy white pelican chicks were being fed in their nests.   Blue footed boobies and terns were making their own nests in close by.  The water surrounding los arcos is supposedly the deepest in the bay - 1,600 feet.
LOS ARCOS
More than a mile from the shore,  the water surface temperature was 71 degrees farenheit.   Deeper down, the water is much cooler,  but soon too warm for the humpback whales, who will begin swimming north.  They will have accomplished what they made the long journey south for - to breed and to give birth.

Back on the beach, a large Ridgeback/Shepherd-mix dog was nursing her ten multi-colored puppies. They had been born five days before on the sand underneath the Embarcadero restaurant.  Mama and babies were t brought two days after this photo was taken to the centro de acopio, the no-kill pound. They will all be sterilized, vaccinated and available for adoption in a few weeks.  Call:  293-3690

AZUL TURQUESA is not a town.  It´s the name of a very new and mostly empty development consisting of a cluster of small, white cement houses in the Valle de Banderas ("Valley of Flags").
AZUL TURQUESA - ATRÁS DE LA CLÍNICA
Azul Turquesa is an hour´s drive southeast of Vallarta, reached after winding through small towns and patches of empty fields and fields planted with mango trees and corn. There is nothing turquoise-blue in sight.  The clinic was requested, organized and staffed with volunteers by the same individuals that organized the clinic in San Juan de Abajo, which is a bit further east.  The small group of animal advocates also paid the vet team for the extra driving time and gasoline and provided lunches.  The operating room was in the communal "salon," and kept cool with several fans blowing.  On the small, green front lawn in front of the building, a long recovery table was set up for post-surgery procedures.   One of the dog owners, a woman in her forties with a fluffy, highlighted pony tail, attentively massaged and caressed her blonde Cocker Spaniel, repeating over and over, "O, mi amor, mi angel," as the dog slept away.
DUEÑA  ACARESIANDO Y HACIENDO MASAJE A SU PERRITA  DESPUÉS DE ESTERILIZACIÓN- AZUL TURQUESA

As I was leaving the clinic, I saw Vicky Boyd, who lives part time in Mezcales and is a very active dog rescuer.  She had brought Marta, a Mexican neighbor,  and her two dogs to have them sterilized. Vicky showed me the below photograph and asked if I knew who could help.  She had seen the emaciated dog a few days earlier at a mechanic´s shop in San Vicente.  When she asked if she could help "Laila," the owner´s main concern was apparently for himself, asking if he was "in trouble."

"LAILA," RESCATADA POR DE SU DUEÑO EN MASCOTA.  NECESITA CASA PUENTE A AYUDA CON LOS COSTOS DEL VETERINARIO.  ES HEMBRA PIT BULL DE 4 AÑOS.  TIENE ERLICHIA Y ANAPLASMA.

Vicky took Laila to a local vet, where she was diagnosed with anaplasma and erlichia.  Erlichia is transmitted by the brown tick, attacks the animals´s organs and is usually fatal if not treated.  These diseases can be avoided by simply removing ticks or treating the dog for ticks.   The vet recommended euthanasia.  Vicky took her to a second vet, who felt Laila had a chance to live, but would need help.  Laila is currently at Centro Medico Veterinario in Mezcales, where Vicky has been paying 700 pesos a day for treatment and boarding since last Saturday.  On Thursday, she paid for an additional five nights of care.
VICKY BOYD WITH PHOTO OF LAILA AND CARMEN
The four-year old female Pit Bull is eating well and being dosed via IV with meds.  Laila is fighting for her life and needs to continue this fight in a safe and nurturing environment.
If you can help with medical expenses, please contact Vicky - 650/548-1757; 044 322 199 3129; vickyLboyd@yahoo.com, or take donations to Centro Medico Veterinario either in Mezcales or to their clinic in Puerto Vallarta (Call for addresses and directions of clinics -  178 0130) or-- make a donation via PayPal to PEACEAnimals earmarked for "Laila."

To date, the following donations have been received for Laila:

Malka Sekey and Steve Oseas - $100 USD (via PayPal to PEACEAnimals)
Shelly Walden -$25 USD (via PayPal to PEACEAnimals)
Linda Thompson for Reika´s Angels - $25 USD
Julie Anne Montagano - $35 USD (via PayPal to PEACEAnimals)
Elizabeth Brousseau ´- $35 USD (via PayPal to PEACEAnimals)
Louise Munro - $75 USD (via PayPal to PEACEAnimals)
Lourdes Tovar - $115 USD (via PayPal to Colina Clinic)
SI PUEDE DONAR DINERO PARA LOS GASTOS VETERINARIOS,  DAR CASA PUENTE OR ADOPTAR-   CONTACTOS ARRIBA.

I have seen other street dogs and photos of street dogs that have had almost the same heartbreaking looks as Laila has.  I´ve never seen an owned dog that has looked this tragic.  The vets at Centro Paraiso told Vicky this is the worst case they´ve ever encountered. On April 8th, Laila´s condition was stable,  with lab reports pending.

IF ANY FUNDS ARE REMAINING AFTER LAILA COMPLETES HER TREATMENT, THEY WILL BE USED FOR FUTURE SOS CASES LIKE LAILA´S.  THESE ANIMALS AND THE COST OF THEIR TREATMENTS WILL BE  REPORTED IN THE BLOG.  COST OF LAILA´S CARE WILL BE REPORTED IN THIS BLOG.
