¡¡¡EXCITING FIRST LAUNCH OF NATIONAL SPAY/NEUTER CAMPAIGNS FOR MEXICO!!!

VIVERO DEL "QUINTO DEL SOL"  EN LAS JUNTAS Y LOS VERANOS - NURSERY

It was a short drive south, about thirty-five minutes, to buy some white ginger at Quinto del Sol nursery in las Juntas y los Veranos.
VIVERO QUINTO DEL SOL
Open only by appointment, it is two lots filled with mysterious and beautiful plants and vines.  Half-way there, I got out of the car to take a photograph of idyllic Mismaloya, where the beach scene in "Night of the Iguana" was filmed.
MISMALOYA

About a three-minute drive south of the village of las Juntas y los Veranos are the wonderful Vallarta botanical gardens, where we admired two large geese, a variety of orchids and watched the rushing Tomatlán river below us as we enjoyed lunch on the balcony.  The heat continues this week with temperatures still in the low 90´s and humidity at 77%. Every other evening torrential rains, usually accompanied by dramatic rumbling, grumbling thunder and crackling lightning shows, cool the air for several hours.   I am singing Cole Porter´s "It´s too darn hot."  https://search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?p=%22It%C2%B4s+too+darn+hot!%22&ei=UTF-8&hspart=mozilla&hsimp=yhs-001

LAUNCH OF FIRST NATIONAL SPAY/NEUTER CAMPAIGN IN MEXICO!!  Paulina Stettner, former director and vet tech for PEACEAnimals, has been working in Guadalajara for the past several months as director of Calle Cero (literal translation is "Zero Street."  It´s also a play on words, as the name sounds like "Callejero," which refers to a stray).  The foundation supervises and facilitates communications and actions between government and non profits, providing discounted supplies, human and financial resources, as well as veterinary training from experts in high-quality, high-volume spay/ neuter organizations.
CLÍNICA GRATIS DE PEACEANIMALS

Paulina hopes to be able to provide support in the future to PEACEAnimals.  We sterilize over 4,000 cats and dogs annually in the area of the Bay of Banderas, which includes the States of Jalisco and Nayarit.  Our costs are approximately $1,800 USD every surgery week.  PEACEAnimals needs donations to continue our important work.  Our mission is to help prevent the future suffering of animals.  IF DONATIONS COME IN THIS WEEK FOR PEACEANIMALS, THEY WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON AZTECA TV ON THURSDAY, RAISING VISIBILITY FOR PEACEANIMALS.     PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING: www.peaceanimals.org  We have 501(c)(3).

The Azteca TV publicity launch ( "Movimiento Azteca TV") for pet sterilization was made possible by the generous sponsorship of MARS/Pedigree, which pays for the production of the media campaign.
Pedigree has provided a team of consultants and is offering assistance with communications and has hired an agency to facilitate relationships with the government.

Calle Cero is receiving support from pharmaceutical companies and from the government.  A work agreement has been signed with the health departments of
CLÍNICA DE PEACEANIMALS
the state of Jalisco and the Federal District.  This partnership will allow Calle Cero to work in urban areas, as well as in conservancy areas to help prevent the decimation of wildlife due to feral cats and dogs.

Paulina and her team have been meeting with senators in D.F. and with the governor of Jalisco, and is working closely with the Mexican staff of HSI (Humane Society International),

Pedigree will supply a theatre group and puppet show.  Seventy vets will be operating, with an anticipated result of more than 600 surgeries in one day.

CLÍNICA DE PEACEANIMALS
The following campaign will be in D.F. on the Monumento a la Revolución.  The Department of Health will provide 50 vets and 25 mobile surgery units, with the expectation that 2,500 animals will be spayed and neutered in six days.  Simultaneously, there will be a small clinic in Ciudad Juárez.
CLÍNICA DE PEACEANIMALS.

GOAL of first sterilization campaign is to raise 2.5 million pesos.  Funds raised will be via donations to Banco Aztec or by dialing a 1-900 number that will charge donation to the next month´s phone bill.  Azteca is a national network and offers Azteca US for Latinos in the southern states.

Calle Cero has US tax-deductible status through FOMAW (Friends of Mexican Animal Welfare) and  also has Mexican donataria.

"FLOWER" ADOPTADA POR KELLY PEYTON Y VA A VIVIR EN NEVADA
For Kelly, this means flying home to Portland and then driving to Reno.  About five years ago, I saw this small cat with three little kittens next to a waterless stone fountain at the bottom of the steps to Matamoros.    I took the family to be sterilized, brought them home with me, found homes for the kittens, one of which lives with us.  Flower jumped over a terrace and went back to her spot by the fountain and the flower box,  where she is fed twice a day.   This sweet cat is now in a loving home and safe from the poisonings that take place in so many neighborhoods.

I stopped by the Centro de Acopio adoptions at the ex-presidencia (former city hall) on Saturday morning and was happy to see two puppies being adopted.  Hopefully more cats and dogs found homes that day.   There are approximately 70 dogs and 40 cats at the acopio that need homes.  293-3690

GATOS EN LA ISLA CUALE:
At’n  MVZ Ma. Guadalupe Dávalos

DIRECTORA DEL CENTRO DE ACOPIO ANIMAL DE PUERTO VALLARTA

Estimada Doctora,

MEDUSAS AND PIGS

LOS ARCOS VISTOS DE MISMALOYA

With the car windows rolled up and the AC on, if the days are cloudy and grey, it looks like winter outside.  Temperatures drop to the low 80´s on these kinds of days and rise to the low 90´s when the sun is out.
Humidity is in the 70´s and the water in the bay at 82 degrees is perfect for long swims.  The medusas, which are the third and last stage of the life cycle of jellyfish, have been visiting for the past few weeks.

HERMOSAS MEDUSAS

I´ve bumped up against several of the opaque, gelatinous creatures in the bay,  but wasn´t stung.  As a friend of mine and I swam quickly away from a cluster of medusas, we wondered if a horror movie had been made about them.

On my way to the clinic on Thursday, I drove up Allende street,  which climbs up from centro and then down to the libramiento.  This back road in and out of town is called it the "tunnel road"  because it goes through two tunnels.
Half-way down  the hill on Allende appeared the wonderful and unexpected sight of large group of pigs and piglets on the side of the cobbled road.  They were oinking and squealing and wiggling their tails as they rooted through the grass and brush and some trash.  There were no humans in sight.
COLONIA LOPEZ MATEOS:

That same day, a dog trying to cross the busy libramiento was hit and killed under the PEACEAnimals banner that gave notice of a free clinic three blocks away.  The dog´s body was still there Friday morning.  A sign had been posted next to it in Spanish saying "This is what can happen when you don´t sterilize your dog."
EL LIBRAMIENTO ATRÁS DE COLONIA LOPEZ MATEOS

STERILIZATIONS in Colonia Lopez Mateos - July 15-18

Male Dogs:  15; Female Dogs: 39; Male Cats: 28; Female Cats: 40
TOTAL:  112

Plus one euthanasia of a female dog with TVT (transmissible venereal tumor) and one pregnancy terminated for a cat with 4 fetuses.

All pet registration forms with signatures of owners or rescuers are submitted by Dr. Poli to the local department of health, with copies to PEACEAnimals.

DONATIONS AT CLINIC: 980 pesos

Shannon Beston sent over large garbage bags, disinfectant swipes, Coca Cola, bottled water, granola bars, coffee (which Soraya makes every morning for them) and enough beer for each member of the team to drink one after each long, hot day of work.

Thank you to Soraya and Almendra of Puro Gato for securing the bodega location for the clinic and for putting up posters.

DONATIONS TO PEACEANIMALS:  Debra Pender - 500 pesos
Maré Hansen - $1,000 USD
Anonymous - 500 pesos

EDUCATION PROGRAM:  On hiatus while schools are closed for a month of summer vacation  This poster board is one used in classrooms to demonstrate the exponential growth in births of unsterilized cats.

(El número arriba no está correcto.  Es 044 - 322 134- 0942)

ADOPTIONS:  As I walked our three rescue dogs on the isla Cuale, I passed a boy who looked about eight-years old squatting on the grass with one of the island´s gardeners.  On my way back to that same location near the swinging wooden bridge the was holding a black plastic vegetable crate with a top.  Inside the crate was a long-haired black and white female kitten.  It was one of several that Soraya nd her sister Almendra of Puro Gato had caught on the island, taken to a clinic for sterilization and returned where they were found.  The boy was adorable and said his parents had told him he could adopt a kitten and where to go to find one.  With all of its mango and papelillo trees, the island is the coolest place I´ve found for dog walking.

¡SORPRESA!    LOPEZ MATEOS
