After registering pets and before surgeries began, two volunteers bagged donations of dog food to give to pet owners in poor colonias. We hope to continue receiving either financial or pet food donations to give out to undernourished cats and dogs.
A young Mexican woman in gym clothes brought in a pretty black and white female dog she had rescued from the street. The dog was in heat and more than just at risk for pregnancy, she was at risk for TVT -transmissible venereal tumor.

The tumors are malignant and fatal unless treated with chemo. Sadly, Puerto Vallarta hasn´t had access to chemotherapy meds for weeks. Instead of five weekly treatments by vets, TVT dogs are being euthanized in order to prevent suffering.

Male dogs - 18; Female dogs - 51; Male cats - 37; Female cats; 43
TOTAL: 149!
PLUS pregnancies terminated for 1 dog with 8 fetuses; 4 cats with 4 fetuses each; 2 cats with 3 fetuses each = 30 animals not born to suffer.

As regards terminated pregnancies - thirteen little puppies not more than three weeks old were left to die on top of cerro de mono ("monkey hill") in Sayulita this past week The mama would have been lactating and will be pregnant again in a few months. The puppies were picked up by the police, thanks to a hiker´s phone call. This is why PEACEAnimals does what it does. Please help support our clinics.

RETURN TO CARTONLANDIA: After visiting "cartonlandia," the clinic week of January 15th, I loaded up our car with old sheets and towels and discounted dog food from PetCo, plus boxes of diapers and used clothing donated by Roy Andres and Linda Galston, two generous friends. Livia Hevia, coordinator of adoptions at PetCo, met me at this squatters settlement high on a hill with a splendid view of the bay. We saw intact male dogs, pregnant dogs and dogs whose tired-looking teats indicated many litters. The donated items were distributed to the people who had taken their pets to be sterilized at the recent clinic in colonia Mariano Otero, and to those pet owners who promised to go to the clinic in las aralias a few days later. One hopes they did.

| RESCATADA Y EN ADOPCIÓN |
We picked up a darling tan and white female puppy with an infection resulting from the recent spaying. The family lives in a shack with three children, one of which is severely handicapped, plus nine other dogs. The owners didn´t collect the puppy later that day nor the next, so it is being kept by Dr. Giuliana in her clinic and for adoption.

DRIZZLY DAYS: More than a week ago, Vallarta experienced a torrential rainfall. We are now seeing days of drippy, drizzly weather. Temperatures are cool (mid-60´s during the day) for the semi-tropics.

Lines of fishermen on the beach in front of the malecón have had success catching toro. Further south in Boca, a third sailboat in the last several months broke free of its anchor and washed up on the beach. Out in the bay, chances of seeing whales and dolphins are excellent. On Sunday, a line of pelicans skimmed low over the silvery grey water as we left the dock. An hour later, we began encountering humpbacks - eight total - and a pod of dolphins.
