PLACES OF BEAUTY

SOUTHERN BEACHES: High waves and a windy, rippling bay have not been ideal for whale and dolphin watching, but great for surfers.  Water taxis and private pangas from Vallarta and Boca take one to splendid beaches in the southern part of the bay, where surfers slide across curling waves and brown horses cross rivers to roll on their backs in soft sand.

PLAYA GRANDE - Not a beach, but over 2,300 hectares of cantera and ranch land belonging to the ejido community. The walk along the tree-lined river is lush and beautiful, with several inviting swimming holes for cool water dipping in winter. The only sounds one hears are the rush of the river, the occasional braying of a lusty burro,  scattered, sharp barks of a few dogs, roosters cock-a doodle-doo-ing and small, green parrots screeching as they fly overhead.
Crossing the river can be done via a
long, swinging bridge with a wooden "welcome" sign over it and a "thank you" sign on the return.
It can also be crossed via the under-used vehicular road where the river is very low.
At the end of the paved road, about an hour´s walk away from the entrance gate to the ejido (communal land) property, is a pretty, open-air restaurant and a very reasonably priced (500 pesos) zip line.  Pick-up points include Plaza Lazaro Cardenas and the stadium.  Phone01 322 114 2846

On Friday morning, after several grey days with temperatures in the low 60´s and even some sprinkles, sun and blue skies reappeared.  It will take months for thousands of wave-tossed rocks on some  local beaches to disappear.

On the last Sunday in January, we were back in Banderas Bay, my favorite place of beauty in Vallarta.  Although surfers (artist Brewster Brockmann is easy to spot on his blue board)were still catching waves south of town,  the bay wasn´t so rough as to impede visibility of whale, dolphin and manta sightings.  After 45 minutes heading west from Boca, we found ourselves in the midst of a super pod of at least fifty spotted dolphins.  Their sleek bodies gleamed in the sunlight as they performed glorious aerial acrobatics,  creating frothy, white splashes as they landed back in the water.  Other dolphins, perhaps less athletic or simply more curious, approached and swam around our panga. Why do dolphins breach?  I like to think it is for pure pleasure.

SPOTTED DOLPHIN
There are two other types of dolphins that reside in Banderas Bay - spinners and bottle- nosed.  There is sometimes cross-species breeding.

RED TIDE - There were smears of red tide on the bay that same day, which is highly unusual for this time of year.  Red tides (algal blooms) are the result of algae growing out of control, and usually appear when waters are warmer than they are now.
EXAMPLE OF A RED TIDE (MAREA ROJA)
Algal blooms can provide food for animals in the ocean, but some contain biotoxins, killing marine mammals, birds, fish and shellfish.  Decaying algal blooms can also deplete oxygen in the water, killing or causing animals to leave the area.

A temporary sanitary closure has just been put in place in Puerto Vallarta, banning the commercialization, storage and consumption of shellfish.  This ban extends from the malecón to the marina.  Eating a clam or oyster contaminated with biotoxins can result in paralysis and even death.

RED MOON:  Impossible to see the much-awaited eclipse in Vallarta due to the return a few days ago of grey, cloudy weather,  accompanied by some night rains.  Friday morning the sky was cloudless and the glistening bay was flat and without a ripple on it.

HAPPENING NOW:  In Spanish, "tianguis"  means an open market bazaar.  The 10th annual National Meeting of Artisans is a tianguis not to be missed if you enjoy treasure hunts. More than 200 artisans from 20 states in Mexico and various others from Ecuador, Peru, Columbia and Turkey (!) are represented.  Held under a huge, carpeted tent in a vacant lot across the street from the Buena Ventura hotel, the tianguis opened on February 2 and runs through February 19.
FRIDA COCO - POSTER GIRL FOR TVT:  Casey Lupton rescued this scared, skinny female dog from the street.  She had perhaps been tossed out by an owner because of a large tumor near the dog´s genitals.
"FRIDA COCO" - UN PERRITA DE 3 AÑOS RESCATADA DE LA CALLE.  ASUSTADA Y DEMACRADA, EL VETERINARIO DIJO QUE FÚE ESTERILIZADA, PERO EL VET QUE LA OPERÓ NO SACÓ  LOS OVARIOS.  POR ESO, CUANDO SE METIÓ EN CELO, UN PERRO (O MÁS) LA MONTÓ, LA DAÑÓ Y AHORA TIENE TVT - QUE ES UNA ENFERMEDAD VENEREA Y MUY TRANSMISIBLE.  NECESITA CASA PUENTE SIN OTROS PERROS PARA SUS 5 SEMANAS DE QUIMIO.  AVISA, PORFA, SI PUEDE AYUDAR.

Casey´s vet confirmed the very gentle, tan dog was approximately three years old, had been spayed, but ovaries not removed. This
type of "spaying" is not rare in Mexico.  There are lazy and/or incompetent vets and there are practicing "vets" who are aren´t licensed. Because Fridi Coco´s ovaries were not removed at the time of surgery when she went into heat, she was mounted by at least one dog, injured and contacted TVT (transmissible venereal tumor).  These malignant tumors are most commonly passed on from dog to dog by sexual contact.  The disease can also be spread via licking, sniffing or parturition. Dating back 11,000 years, it is the oldest cancer found in nature and found only in dogs.  Spay/neuter isn´t just about no more puppies.
SU TVT - "FRIDA COCO" - HER MALIGNANT VENEREAL TUMOR

Casey is paying the vet bill, but cannot foster Frida Coco, as she has a dog at home.  TVT is highly contagious, so this sweet dog needs to be kept in a cage at the vet´s or in a foster home with no other dogs for five weeks of chemotherapy.  Can anyone give Frida Coco a temporary home?

IN COL DEL MAR.  VIEW OF THE GREEN FOOTHILLS OF THE SIERRA MADRES FROM THE CLINIC.

COLONIA DEL MAR:  A turn to the east a block before the Biblioteca los Mangos and then a 15-minute drive up the hill, far from the sea.  The clinic took place on the second floor of a cement building under construction with a distant, but lovely view of the bay and a close view of the hillsides of the green Sierra Madres.  The owner, Rocio López, moved here five months ago from Acapulco and is building a pozoles restaurant called "Pozolería" that will open in two weeks.  Pozole means "hominy," and is a traditional and very popular Mexican soup or stew.  Ingredients besides hominy are meat, chili peppers and seasonings.

Rocio told me that at 5:30 AM, she was the second person in line with two rescued puppies at the isla Cuale clinic last month.  The two Terrier-mix puppies, brother and sister, are four months old now and ready for adoption.  Contact Rocio if interested:  rmaxi3@hotmail.com

2018 IS THE YEAR OF THE DOG:   Beginning on February 16th, which is the Chinese New Year, and lasting until February 4th, 2019, is  the "Year of the Dog."   The dog is the 11th "auspicious" animal out of twelve in the Chinese zodiac, which relates to the their calendar. (The cat is not one of the 12 "auspicious" animals).  According to the Chinese, if a dog arrives at one´s home, it is a sign that fortune will also arrive. Characteristics of someone born under the sign of the dog:  Loyal, honest and just.   If you would like to adopt a dog, hundreds here are waiting on the streets and in shelters for homes.
