The 6th of January, the day of the Three Kings, is when ten of us in a panga saw the three orcas, and they came to us. We had seen two different large, humid spouts in the distance, but were never close enough to actually see the whales. We headed towards a long, curving line of dozens of white sea birds resting on the surface of the water, while others in the air plunged into the bay. Fish were there and birds were feeding. Moments later we saw a spout accompanied by very large black fin. It wasn´t the fin of a whale or a dolphin. It was an orca!
By its size, the orca was quickly identified as a male by Karla, and it was swimming towards us. Two smaller orcas, which she said were females, also headed directly towards the panga while the male stayed behind. They swam around us, just inches away, while we gave loud, exuberant shouts and claps of joy. The two females followed us for several moments and then raced next to the sides of it, under it, and in front of it. When they dropped behind, , we thought they had vanished, but whooped when we saw them swiftly powering towards us in the wake of the panga. The two orcas rolled over on their backs as they raced up next to us, and then breaking the surface of the water. The encounter ended when we headed back towards towards Boca de Tomatlán, leaving the orcas to return to the feeding area.
What many feel with this kind of extraordinary experience is not only an enormous thrill, but a deep reverence for the spectacular beauty of wild animals with which one is sharing air and water, sunlight and sky.

Orcas have not been seen in the Bay of Banderas for a long time. Because this is the second time we have seen them in a period of a few weeks, it is in indication that the eco system is changing. There isn´t enough food in the ocean for the orcas and reports are that they are experiencing still births as a result. The orcas are here at the same time the humpback whales are breeding and birthing. It only takes two orcas to separate a female from her calf.

PLAZA EN EL PORVENIR |
EL PORVENIR ("The Future") is a small municipality of the Bay of Banderas in the neighboring state of Nayarit. Less than 10,000 people live in this quiet, clean place located approximately 45 minutes northeast of central Vallarta. The clinic was held in the ejidal (communal landowners) headquarters around the corner from the central plaza. At the edge of the plaza is a cluster of taco stands, where thin, flea-scratching dogs with or without owners sit in the sun waiting for scraps. The male dogs I saw were all intact and the females showed years of birthing puppies. A young, thin tabby cat sat in front of the "Super Guero" market and let me pick her up. She was spayed at the clinic and returned where found. The owner says the cat jumps up into the open extra large cat kibble bags on the sidewalk and feeds herself.
PLAZA CON PERROS ESPERANDO MORDITAS DE LAS TACQUERÍAS - EL PORVENIR |
At 9 AM, more than 40 cats and dogs had been registered and we had run out of kennels. Owners patiently held on to their pets until the animals were tranquilized and sedated. We need more donations of cat and dog kennels! Angela Kelleher, Jill Goldstein, president and founder of Pause 4 Paws and Laura Eucker, executive director of Angel of Hope Animal Rescue (AOHrescue.org), were there to volunteer at the recovery table. Laura and Jill will be flying rescue cats and dogs back to Minnesota for fostering and adoption.
If you are flying to Minnesota and are willing to accompany a rescue cat or dog, the pet´s expenses will all paid for and you will be met at the airport. Contact: jill@pause4pawsmn.org
