VERDE/GREEN

RÍO PALO MARÍA - nietos Gloria y Nathaniel

The walk through the jungle along the Palo María river is very beautiful.  It is a somewhat wild and tangled path with screeching green parrots flying overhead.  Halfway to a tumbling waterfall in the green foothills above is a cool, clear green pool bordered by boulders.  Thick vines dangling from tall trees provide Tarzan swings into the water below where small fish swim.  Soon after leaving this serene spot, the walk becomes a more clambering and  leaping one over large rocks and boulders. Last week-end I took two visiting grandchildren, Gloria (10) and Nathaniel (8) and our three dogs to Palo María.  At the first waterfall, which spills over a tall, dark granite cliff, we were the only ones there when we first arrived.  The water is deeper and darker and cooler than the more shallow pool below, and the fish are larger and there are more of them. Behind the waterfall is a small cave where one can sit and enjoy the view from the other side of a watery curtain. As we were leaving, four young men arrived with a skateboard and a guitar.

                               CASACADA PALO MARÍA

The jungled foothills of the Sierra Madres are green and gleaming after frequent night rains in July and August.  All this green gives the impression of an abundance of water for Puerto Vallarta.  But the amount of rain water seeping into the ground cannot keep up with developers´demands for water pumped up from aquifers. At a recent meeting in Puerto Vallarta, an hydrologist expressed concern about the lack of proper management of the town´s aquifer and warned there could be severe water shortages in the near future.  Now is the time to start conserving.
ENSENADA CON PLAYITA - BAHÍA DE BANDERAS

The glittering water in Banderas Bay is blue-green now.  On a recent Sunday panga excursion with Karla de la Peña (Boca Divers),  we encountered two pods of orcas ten minutes after setting out from Boca de Tomatlán.   A large male approached and swam white belly up under our boat.  The engine was idled by captain Daniel as we admired these wonderful cetaceans for almost half an hour while they fed nearby.  Afterwards, we snorkeled at a gorgeous cove with a small, sandy beach where someone had constructed a miniature palapa with palm fronds. The water is filled with colorful tropical fish and thousands of small, opaque fish.  The heady perfume of white plumeria blossoms and the songs of birds we could not see floated down to us from the overhanging craggy cliff.  Beautiful Mexico.

¡ORCAS!

LOST GREEN:  One of the supporters of PEACEAnimals is GreaterGood, which partners with the Rainforest Trust.  The fires in the Amazon are an enormous tragedy for plants, animals and humans.  If you would like to help conserve 6 million acres of rainforest in Brazil, a $10 USD gift will conserve 10 acres.  To donate:  www.greatergood.org

ATENGUILLO:  "A place surrounded by water."

The town is in fact still surrounded by several streams and a river with the same name.  Antenguillo is approximately a three-hour inland drive from Puerto Vallarta.
ATENGUILLO

One reaches the town by driving over the foothills of the Sierra Madres, passing the turn-off to the picturesque former silver mining town of San Sebastián, descending into the green plateau below,  passing Mascota and its horses and ancient volcano, and passing the pilgrimage town of Talpa and its miniature virgin.

Based on the high recommendations by the township of Mascota, a request had been made to PEACEAnimals for a clinic.  When our vet team travels outside the municipality of Vallarta, the requesting local government or animal advocate group is responsible for the

VALLE DORADO, NAYARIT - "Golden Valley." Located a few miles north and across the highway from affluent Nuevo Vallarta, this small town is not in a valley and there is nothing golden.  There are rows and rows of small cement houses, a large playground and a small plaza and church.  We have been visiting Valle Dorado approximately twice a year because there are always so many animals there that need spay/neuter.  The clinic took place in a partially empty, pale blue two-story rental house next to a green field.

POSTSCRIPT RE "PETEY" - No one responded to this little rescue dog´s photos, so I took him to PetCo Friday morning for their regular three-day week-end adoption event.  My husband Ned did not want more animals.  In yoga class an hour later, I heard him call my name from the open door, saying,  "I´ve made a mistake.  Let´s go get the dog."  We did.
"PETEY" - RESCATADO Y ADOPTADO - CON NED DEWITT
When I told our six grandchildren, young Gloria responded, "I´m so happy.  We love him with all our hearts!"  Her younger brother Nathaniel asked his mother if they could be "a family that rescues dogs.

COLORS OF CANTERA

EL CAÑON EN POLVERÍN - RÍO HORCONES - BOCA DE TOMATLÁN

PAROTA EN POLVERIN - BOCA
For many, Boca de Tomatlán conjures up visions of a fishing village on a small cove at Banderas Bay. Boca is also home to a pristine and gorgeous canyon through which the beautiful Horcones river flows freely from the Sierra Madres to the bay. To visit the canyon, drive approximately one mile south past the Boca exit to a dirt road on the right, where a sign reads "Rancho Polverin."  Follow the winding road down to a magnificent parota tree, park, and then walk a short distance to a locked cyclone fence that reaches from the majestic granite cliff to the river´s edge.  One can go around the fence by clambering over rocks down to the  river and then back up to the dirt trail on the other side of the fence.  It is there that one sees high piles of dynamited rocks blocking the path.

On July 19th, the City of Puerto Vallarta closed down construction of a mini-hydroelectric plan.   The project had begun without permits or licenses on land determined to be in Vallarta and not in the municipality of Cabo Corrientes. The current closure is the second one,  which many hope will be permanent.

NADANDO CON NIETOS EN EL RÍO HORCONES - JARDÍNES BOTÁNICOS DE PUERTO VALLARTA
Fifteen minutes south of Boca are the lush Puerto Vallarta Botanical Gardens, a great spot for delicious lunch, spectacular view and swimming in the cool Horcones river.

CANTERA EN PLAYA GRANDE

On August 3rd, my family and I drove northeast 30 minutes to one of my favorite nearby places,  Playa Grande, where the Pitillal river flows through more than 2,000 acres of pink cantera hills covered by jungle. Playa Grande is ejido (communal) land and owners are paid for the cantera mined there.  The word "cantera" in Spanish means "quarry."  This porous volcanic rock, which allows for detailed carving and cutting for sculptures, columns, fireplaces, tiles, etc., is predominantly green in the southern state of Oaxaca. The color of cantera, formed by volcanic ash and dust, is determined by the colors of already existing earth and stone that are washed into silt beds.  A cantera stone company in the U.S. lists 17 different colors available.
RIO PITILLAL - PLAYA GRANDE

Next to the river is a perfect, paved road for walking, running and biking. There are swimming holes along the way to Kali Eco Park and half way up, one chooses between wading across the river or walking across on the swinging wooden bridge. The side of the road is where we found three discarded puppies on Saturday, August 3rd.

ABANDONADOS SIN AGUA NI COMIDA EN EL CAMINO DE PLAYA GRANDE - RESCATADOS Y PRONTO EN ADOPCIÓN

Left in a crate in the hot sun with no water or food, the puppies were covered with fleas, ticks and mange. We collected them and drove further up the road to Kali Eco Park, where family zipped while I fed puppies and made sure they didn´t disappear. Brought them home after lunch - sent out emails - and luckily/happily animal advocates Colette Zarry (Colina Clinic) took the beige female Terrier-type on Sunday and Brischa Borgrevink (LADRA) took the little black female on Monday.  The spotted black and white male is with me and I´m calling "Petey." He needs a home.  The three siblings are 4-5 months old and all tested negative for disease.  "Mulberry" is at LADRA and "Belle" is at Colina Clinic.  Contact via FB if interested.

Petey was sterilized at the PEACEAnimals clinic in Ixtapa on August 7th.  On August 6th, he was vaccinated for parvo, distemper and rabies and treated for mange and parasites.  Petey weighs 4.8 kilos and won´t be larger than 10 kilos.  He´s smart, affectionate, very playful...  and surprisingly... is housebroken.  If interested-  gretchen@peaceanimals.org

EL PORVENIR, NAYARIT:

CLÍNICA EN EL PORVENIR
PEACEAnimals has made previous visits to this immaculate, typical small Mexican town 45-minutes northeast of Vallarta in the state of Nayarit.  Pet owners come from many of the surrounding villages, some arriving as early as 5 AM to wait in line for registration.  This was the case on July 31st, our first day. The clinic took place in the hot and humid local government office, around the corner from the plaza, the modern white church and a leaning, lone pine tree.

IXTAPA - A large municipality of Puerto Vallarta that PEACEAnimals has visited several times because of the great need.  This location was a new one and because neither the street nor the colonia were available on GPS, I asked a taxi driver just off the road to San Sebastián to guide me there. The clinic took place in the large, covered patio of a handsome terra cotta home in a rural neighborhood.   It was a rainy, muddy morning Wednesday, with a line of people waiting with pets.
