EL MALECÓN - HALLOWEEN |
DAY OF THE DEAD - DATES BACK TO A CENTURIES-OLD AZTEC FESTIVAL HONORING THE DEAD. November 1st is generally known as "Day of the Angelitos," (or "Inocentes"), which invites the spirits of babies and children who have died to visit earth. "Day of the Dead," on November 2nd, is when families go to cemeteries to decorate graves and tombs of loved ones. Halloween easily merges into "Day of the Dead" observances and festivities.
To see an authentic Day of the Dead celebration, one needs to be in a very Mexican city or town where traditions still thrive. The "altars" set up at the former mayór´s office and around town are suggestions of what one can see in some cemeteries - marigolds, lilies and roses, photographs, food, drinks, etc. One year in San Miguel de Allende, I stood in a very long line to enter the main cemetery on the Day of the Dead. Once inside, we listened to mariachis playing joyfully at a grave site and saw two roosters in a cage on top of a tombstone - both places showing what someone had loved.
Halloween is observed in Puerto Vallarta by young trick-or-treaters, many of whom dress as skeletons, which fits well with Day of the Dead. The wind their way south from the malecón, past large displays of skeletons, and end up in the zona romantica. The trick-or-treating is done at the many sidewalk restaurants, where diners hand out candies to children. They respond with "Happy Halloween" and "thank you" in accented English and a big smile.
MERCADO LOS MANGOS - With the soon-to-arrive "high season," the farmers/artisans market has reopened at the Los Mangos library. Appealing products, grass and the shade of mature mango trees make this outing a very pleasant one. Open Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM 1001 Francisco Villa - a couple of blocks before the turn to Costco.
MERCADO BIBLIOTECA LOS MANGOS |
Also just open - the Saturday market at Lázaro Cárdenas park. It was once a real park, but is now a cemented plaza with a few trees and some grass. This market has been in business for several years and has a much larger selection than the Los Mangos Library market. It´s also hotter and more crowded. Open 10 AM-2PM. And ff wondering about the weather in Puerto Vallarta - it´s HOT. Temperatures hover at about 90 degrees fahrenheit, humidity is 81% and the water in the Bay of Banderas is 84 degrees fahrenheit.
MERCADO SÁBADO EN EL PARQUE DE LÁZARO CÁRDENAS - MÚSICA DE LOS HUICHOLES |
On Sunday morning, my husband and I walked to the isla Cuale with our dogs. Passing a teen-age boy holding a black open backpack next to his chest, I asked if there was a kitten inside. Yes.
It was a very small, white kitten with one green eye and one blue eye. It had just been rescued at the cultural center and still too small for surgery. The boy will be back the first week of December.

VALLE DE BANDERAS ("Valley of Flags") in a municipality in the area of the Bay of Banderas, in the next door state of Nayarit. The quickest way to arrive takes 50 minutes and is via highway 200 to the beach town of Bucerias and then inland. One can also go via an inland turn at Mezcales, but it takes 20 minutes longer. I took this route on my way to the clinic. Passing through the small towns, named mostly after saints, were numerous stands at the plazas selling real and artificial flowers for Day of the Dead.
Past all the towns is the valley, which is very green and very beautiful, filled with mango orchards, palms, some blue-green agave, and lavender and pink wildflowers. In the distance, the dark, jagged foothills of the Sierra Madres are a dramatic backdrop for the orchards and brown horses tethered to generous shade trees in green fields.

The clinic took place on the ground floor of a popular gym next to a small air strip. The clinic was slightly under-attended on Thursday, perhaps because it was not a central location or because residents were observing the Day of the Dead. I drove back to the plaza to look for dogs with "Pilas," a tall, attractive man from La Cruz who had brought his large dog to the clinic. The only dog left on the large square was a sleeping grey and white homeless male Pit Bull mix that had already been neutered.

A block away I saw a young boy with his father walking a purebred female Staffordshire Pit Bull on a chain. The father said someone had given him the dog and he wanted her to have babies. After a rather lengthy discussion on the merits of spay/neuter, they all drove back to the clinic with us.

Valle de Banderas is a ranch and agricultural area, and rancheros are very resistant to sterilizing their male dogs. One man living around the corner from the gym told me that he didn´t want his male dog fixed because it would "work less" for him.

Henrietta Hummel, originally from Germany and now living in the Valley de Banderas, drove to the town dump on Friday, situated 10 minutes west of town. With help, she brought back twelve "sweet" homeless dogs for sterilization. On Saturday, she and her friend Amelia, who owns the gym, were able to bring in nine dogs from the dump. Sadly, there are approximately 100 dogs living there. The grateful manager of the dump site gave Henrietta 1,000 pesos for her gas and time.

Neutering a dog or cat is quick and uncomplicated. Spaying a dog or cat takes longer because ovaries are involved, and in small animals, they are very small. There are vets who leave in the ovaries because they don´t have the skill to perform the surgery. The cat or dog can´t get pregnant, but does go into heat and if not kept secure, will be mounted by male animals and possibly injured.
Surgery time, which does not include checking vital signs, tranquilizing, anesthetizing, shaving, inserting and removing breathing tubes (dogs only), requires 6-10 minutes for female cats and 3 minutes for male cats. For female dogs, surgery takes 10-15 minutes and 18 minutes if pregnant. Male dogs require 8 minutes of surgery. Female cats and dogs with owners are tattooed immediately after surgery with blue ink. Homeless female dogs are also tattooed. The ears of homeless cats are clipped to show they have been sterilized, which saves a potential rescuer from taking the animal to a clinic or vet for spay/neuter.

This money was given to Maritza Liney Gutierrez to pay for a distemper vaccine, deworming and food for a street dog she rescued. The dog is now in a foster home in Sayulita.
