FIRST WHALES!

November 12th was a perfect panga Sunday.   The water temperature is still 84 degrees and remains a clear Mediterranean blue.  Motoring out an hour into the bay, we thought the two motionless dolphins we saw were dead, but they were resting horizontally on the surface of the water and made dives as we approached.   Dolphins do rest and sleep, and are able to use only half their brain while sleeping.  They would suffocate if not fully conscious.
BALLENAS - BAHÍA DE BANDERAS - 12 DE NOVIEMBRE

Soon after seeing the dolphins, there was a shout from our captain...  "Ballena!"  In the distance was the instantly recognizable large, pale spout of a whale, whose unused oxygen was meeting cooler air. Our captain cut the engine.  Two humpback whales came closer to us,  not more than 50 meters from the panga.  They lingered for several minutes, during which time they made a couple of shallow dives, surfacing with great, exhaled WHOOOSHES of oxygen. The humpbacks lingered peacefully for several minutes,  until a speeding water taxi filled with passengers headed in our direction.   With the last dive, the whales disappeared, leaving  fluke prints - dark circles of swirling water - where they had been.

For an interesting article:   https://www.wired.com/2009/06/whalepeople/

December 1st is the official opening of whale watching season,  when humpbacks arrive in Puerto Vallarta to birth and to breed.  Heat and humidity have fiercely lingered the first two weeks of November.  Temperatures remain at approximately 90 degrees fahrenheit, but humidity has dropped from 85% to 68%.  Weather should be perfect in two more weeks.

After seeing more dolphins - and they came very close to the panga - we stopped at a very small cove I had never seen before.  The water was very clear and a beautiful blue-green, with many different kinds of tropical fish.  After snorkeling next to jungle-covered sand-colored stone cliffs, we headed back to Boca, where we bought delicious fresh ceviche to take home for lunch.
BEAUTIFUL SMALL COVE SOUTH OF QUIMIXTO

VOLCANES  ("Volcanos") - The source of the name for this municipality of Puerto Vallarta is a mystery, as there are no nearby volcanos.
A forty-minute drive northeast from centro has its beginning on cobbled roads, then paved, cobbled again, up a dirt road called "Monte Everest" and a dusty finale at an empty blue and white one-story cement building on calle "Nevada Toluca."  More mystery - the word "nevada" in Spanish means "snowy," and Toluca is the name of the capitol of the state of México.  High in altitude, the colonial city of Toluca does have a winter view of a snowy, extinct volcano named "Nevado de Toluca."

TOLUCA -  EL CAPITOLIO DEL ESTADO DE MÉXICO - LA CALLE ("NEVADA DE TOLUCA")  DONDE TUVIMOS LA CLÍNICA EN VOLCANES ESTÁ NOMBRADA POR ESTA CIUDAD COLONIAL

Volcanes has a very good school with a community education program supported by private donations.  This municipality of Puerto Vallarta is poor,  and although above sea level, will never see snow nor ash from a volcano.
VOLCANES

It seemed such a short time ago that PEACEAnimals had held a clinic in Volcanes, but it had been seven months. The clinic took place in the same empty blue and white cement building intersecting two rubbled, dirt roads.  This is a very rural area and there are no "blocks" here.
LUGAR PARA LA CLÍNICA EN VOLCANES

When I arrived at 8:30 on Wednesday morning, there were only two animals at the clinic - a tan and white cat and the tan and white TVT Pit Bull for its fourth and next-to-last treatment of chemo.  The malignant tumor on his testicles, which had been enormous, have shrunk to what looks like a red blister, smaller than a dime in size.  Dr. Poli, who came to work even though he had dengue, neutered the dog.

DUEÑA DEL PERRO CON TVT- PARA SU CUARTO TRATAMIENTO DE QUIMO Y ESTERILIZACIÓN - VOLCANES

Because only six animals had been brought in by 9 AM, I took a walk looking for more.  A woman standing at the top of an outdoor wooden staircase with a brown and white female Pit Bull declined to let me take her dog for spaying.
EL JOVEN ARANAÑZAO POR SU GATA QUE ESCAPÓ.  LE PRESTAMOS UNA HAULA PARA REGREAR CON ELLA.  KENNEL LOANED TO THE BOY WHOSE CAT ESCAPED.  VOLCANES
A young, teen-age boy showed me scratches on his arms from his cat that he had tried to bring to us.  I loaned him one of our kennels and he promised to come back with the cat in it.  A couple in a very humble home followed me back to the clinic with a female puppy named "Flaca"  ("Skinny") that they had found in the trash, plus their six-year old large, brown female dog, that they said was a "virgin."

PETS FOR LIFE - ISLA CUALE CLINIC -  On the first Sunday of November,  four vets sterilized 101 cats and dogs.  Thirty-five pet owners were turned away.  Some went to the government-sponsored free clinics operating that week in Pitillal.  Pets for Life is the vet team (3 vets and 1 vet tech) with which PEACEAnimals has a work agreement.

TOMATLÁN ("PLACE OF TOMATOES"), CABO CORRIENTES ("CAPE CURRENTS")

It is a two-hour drive south, inland from the coast, and a place I´ve never seen before.  Frank Ohly, star volunteer, made the trip, sent photos and said Tomatlán was a "well-laid out, pretty, very Mexican town with great people."  The local government paid for the vet team to stay at a clean, very basic hotel near the clinic.

TOMATLÁN, CABO CORRIENTES

The clinic took place in a large, community center, complete with basketball court.  On Wednesday, our first day clinic day and normally the slowest, fifty-five cats and dogs were sterilized.  After half-day Saturday, two hundred and fourteen cats and dogs had been sterilized - and many turned away.  This is a record for PEACEAnimals and a testimony not only to the need and acceptance of free spay/neuter clinics, but to the excellence of our vet team.

THE CLINIC IN TOMATLÁN WAS MADE POSSIBLE BY A GENEROUS GRANT FROM THE FONDATION MARCHIG.   www.marchigtrust.org

The Marchig Animal Welfare Trust was established in 1989 by the late
Madame Jeanne Marchig of Geneva, because of her deep concern for nature and
animals and in memory of her husband, the painter Giannino Marchig.
The objects of the Trust are to protect animals and to promote and encourage practical work in preventing animal cruelty and the relief of animal suffering.

(Two grants were given - $5, 000 USD from the Marchig Animal Welfare Trust, headquartered in Scotland and $5,000 USD from the Fondation Marchig, headquartered in Switzerland. This is the fifth clinic @$1,800 USD sponsored by Marchig).
