GUANAJUATO. "PLACE) OF FROGS." The name in the language of its original inhabitants, the Púrépecha (also known as Tarrascans), was "Quanaxhuato." The frogs I saw, and there were many, were at the Plaza de Ranas ("Plaza of Frogs"). They were made of stone and designed by CAPELO, well-known Mexican architect, sculptor, painter, ceramist.

Guanajuato has an elaborate warren-like tunnel system, originally built to divert the Río Guanajuato, which would flood the mining town during rainy season. The busy tunnels are primarily used by vehicles, although there are sidewalks in them for pedestrians. The sky in high desert is very big, with snowy white and grey clouds evocative of scattered sheep. Houses on the cobble-streeted hillsides are often splashes of intense colors, and bougainvillea is everywhere - the colors of Mexico.

This October celebrated the 45th Cervantino festival, which is one the most important of its kind in Latin America. Performing artists from all over the world enthrall audiences for eighteen days in a variety of temporary and permanent venues, including gardens of former haciendas and in the opulent, turn-of-the-century Teatro Juárez. The great opera star, Enrico Caruso, considered the theatre in Guanajuato to be one of the finest in the Americas.

The Cervantino program we attended offered choices of jazz combos, guitar players, modern dance, classical music ensembles, rock concerts accompanied by an orchestra, avant garde theatre, films, academic lectures and conferences, harpists, gypsy musicians and singers, etc.

IXTAPA- A municipality 30 minutes northeast of Puerto Vallarta The clinic took place in the same
location we used several months ago - in empty building next door to the offices of the municipal headquarters. Volunteer Frank Ohly sent photos (I was out of town that week) and reported that a couple of trucks loaded with kennels holding neighbors´pets from outlying areas had come to the clinic. Sadly, there was one euthanasia. A black male lab-mix, overloaded with ticks and bleeding from the nose, was euthanized at the request of the owner and agreement of the vets. The dog was dying from the tick-transmitted disease of erlichia. Ninety percent of street dogs in Mexico have the disease, which is easily treated with a daily pill for 30 days.

To arrive at the municipality of Desembocada by car takes approximately 45 minutes, turning east at Home Depot. Once off highway 200 going north, the road is straight and lined on both sides with beautiful, leafy green trees. The shade they provide often camouflages the many unmarked speed bumps, which may mean unpleasant surprises on this part of the road. The right hand turn for Desembocada is clearly marked just after the white cement bridge spanning the river.

The clinic was held next to the town square in the mobile clinic belonging to the Puerto Vallarta government offices, CENTRO DE ASISTENCIA ANIMAL Y ALBERGUE MUNICIPAL. A fluffy calico cat was sunning itself in front of the bandstand while homeless and owned dogs walked slowly up and down the cobbled street. A small black male dog wagged its tail when I called to him. He was very thin and seemingly blind in one opaque blue eye. Neighbors said the dog was homeless. I scooped him up, took him to the clinic, bought a small bag of kibble and then placed it on top of his kennel for a meal after surgery.
