Many readers know the story of “Our
Lady of Guadalupe,” also known as the “Virgin of Guadalupe.” Among other titles, she has been
proclaimed “Queen of Mexico” and “Empress of Latin America.” Representing a mixture of the culture, races and religions that formed Mexico, "Our Lady of Guadalupe" is also referred to as "the first mestiza" ("the first Mexican") and is Mexico´s most popular cultural and religious image.
In
1974, Nobel Literature laureta Octavo Paz wrote that "the
Mexican people, after more than two centuries of experiments, have faith only
in the Virgin of Guadalupe and the National Lottery.”
