LINDO MAR

"LINDO MAR" BEACH

With its palm trees, sandy beaches and balmy weather, Christmas seems strangely far away in Puerto Vallarta.  The pine trees that have been for sale for weeks in the outdoor area at Costco look sadly out of place, as if they were part of a tree cemetery.  Young Mexican girls are tra-la-la-ing on our cobbled street and we are playing Christmas music and carols daily to get in the spirit.

At Lindo Mar (“Beautiful Sea”) restaurant, we eat lunch on the beach under a palapa.
A fisherman paddles in on a yellow kayak with his fresh catch daily.  Three or four pelicans and at least one frigate bird always accompany him to the beach.
The smiling, tanned man in the wonderful weather-beaten straw hat guts fish, shucks oysters and throws unwanted scraps to pelicans in the water and on the beach. The black frigates, hovering in the air above the fisherman,  catch the innards tossed up to them.  They are called “tijeras” here (“scissors”) because of their split tail feathers.

December 12 was the last day of the Virgin of Guadalupe processions.  They began
at 5:30 in the morning with banging drums and the singing of la Guadalupana.  The processions, music and dancing lasted until late evening.

Many of us will miss the collection of great street food stands and the very ebullient atmosphere of  "Old México."
