WEDNESDAY WAVES ON THE MALECÓN

Though far away in the Pacific, Hurricane Marie,  which grew to the size of the state of Alaska, brought high waves to Puerto Vallarta.  Part of the malecón near los arcos are was taped off on Wednesday because exciting long rows of waves, some carrying large rocks,  were crashing over the sea wall.  Some of the beaches are still covered with rocks, a reminder of one of the ways beaches have been formed for many thousands of years.

CAN MORELOS STREET BE SAVED?

Morelos is the one-way street running south, one block above the malecón.  When the malecón was renovated three years ago, business people on this street protested the closing of the most northern part of the malecón to traffic.  They knew it would kill business because there would no longer be street parking in front of the restaurants and shops. 

They also knew, as did many other residents, that some of the charm of Old México would be lost.  So while the malecón looks very pretty with its added palm trees and stone mosaics in the pavement,  the updates didn´t increase tourism or visitors.

The renovation did bring cash to the providers to the project, but local business people say that at least 50% of the shops and restaurants have had to close because no one wants to stroll on Morelos (too noisy and too many bus and car fumes) and no one can park on that street. 

"WITHOUT PEOPLE, THERE ARE NO SALES"

Protest messages and "for rent" and "for sale" signs decorate many windows on Morelos.   Bus after bus - I´ve counted as many as nine in a row and they aren´t full -  rumble by on what now looks like the boulevard of broken dreams. 

NAME THAT HOUND:  By a majority of those involved with his rescue,  the former “Cabezón” has been renamed “Santo.”  Readers might recall this is the Hound Dog from el Tuito whose ear had been chopped off with a machete.   Linda Lestz has won lunch for two at the heavenly Rancho Primavera en el Tuito.

ADOPTED!  “Santo,” aka “Cabezón,” by Linda Lestz and her husband Seymour.  I drove to las juntas y los veranos Friday morning in time to see Santo arrive with dog trainer, Angel Bernal, and Linda.  The Lestz´s two rescue Chihuahuas were brought outside on leashes to greet Santo, sniff him and let themselves be sniffed.  A tour of the house and gardens and a short walk followed.

After reading Cabezon´s story and seen his photo in this blog,  Linda and her husband chose "Santo" for his name and committed to giving him a wonderful life for as long as that will be.   Santo is only two years old, but his bones are much older.  He suffering from extreme osteoporosis.  Santo´s  life will be short, but filled with kindness and love and surrounded by beauty.

Also adopted:  A ten-week old black and white female kitten that I found on the Isla Cuale Monday.  Shannon Beston fostered her and almost immediately found a home for it.

NEED HOMES:  Four beautiful 4-week old kittens.  I found them in a box on the Isla Cuale Wednesday when I went there looking for two Siamese kittens I had seen the day before.    Adriana, who feeds the cats on the isla every day, found a box with three tiny kittens in it on Tuesday. LAS PATAS DE MONA

RESCUED AND NEED HOMES:  Driving back from having seen Santo placed in his new home, I was feeling a great sense of relief after helping find a solution for a homeless animal.  Then around the next curve in the narrow, two-lane highway 200 near Mismaloya, I saw an emaciated  dark brown dog looking for food.  My immediate thought was, “I can´t save them all,” and sped past it.  Several seconds later I made a u-turn.  I knew this dog would be either be hit by a car or starve to death.  I  passed the dog, turned around, stopped the car, got out and approached it.  The dog ran off.  I drove up to it and stopped at the divider line.  The dog stopped running.

"MONA," RESCATADA Y NECESITA HOGAR

I opened the driver seat´s car door and called for it to come in.  The dog clambered over my lap and curled up in the passenger seat.  It was a female Pit Bull mix covered in mange.  Her paws were extremely swollen and inflamed.  Before discarding this dog, her owner had probably tried to treat her mange with oil, as her back was covered with it. After a visit to a vet, she was bathed, confirmed has having mange, erlichia and anaplasma.  I´m calling her  “Mona," and after only a day,  she answers to that name. She needs a foster home and/or a permanent one as soon as possible.  We have eleven rescues and cannot keep more.  I have all the meds she needs, which means a month of tablets until she is in perfect health.  Mona is two years old and will be spayed and vaccinated.  She is very sweet, not in the least bit aggressive,  walks well on a leash, stayed by my side at the beach, romped in the waves, fetched sticks, is great with our dogs but barks at cats and chases them with enthusiasm.  Please contact me if interested.

LADRA ("BARK")  On Thursday after briefly volunteering at the PEACEAnimals clinic, I paid my first visit to Ladra, the sanctuary/dog boarding that belongs to fellow board members Brischa and Ted Borchgrevink.

  There are about 20 rescue dogs at LADRA, which is a heavenly place for dogs – and people.  Located high on a hilltop with a small stream running through the property, the spectacular view of Vallarta is only out-dazzled by the gorgeous jungle

COAPINOLE:

  When I arrived in Coapinole Thursday morning about 8:45, there was already a line of people with their cats and dogs.  Each time I arrive at a clinic and see this, I feel thrilled.  A year ago, volunteers often had to walk or drive through colonias pleading with pet owners to let us sterilize their cats and dogs.

  HOMES ALWAYS NEEDED:  For the thousands of dogs and cats on the streets here, in animal refuges and for dozens of healthy and beautiful dogs and cats at the Centro de Acopio, the city´s no-kill pound.

Open Monday-Saturday from 8 AM-2 PM.  293-3690. The Acopio is now holding adoptions every Saturday from 11 AM-2 PM at Plaza Caracól (back end of building near McDonald´s entrance) and other locations.  Please check with administration.   Dogs are walked twice a week by volunteers organized by Friends of Puerto Vallarta Animals.

September 9-12 (martes-viernes) Valle Dorado, Nay.  Calle Valle Hermoso #81.    As one drives on highway heading towards Nuevo Vallarta, there is a SAMs club on the left and an exit on the right. Exit across from the SAMs directly in front of the Chedraui grocery store. Go four blocks down to the bus route and take a right on Valle de Mexico, then go seven blocks to Valle Grande.  Turn right.  Clinic will be on the right hand side.
