FANTASTIC BROCKMANNS OF BANDERAS BAY

Perros de Pipo Brockmann - Boca de Tomatlan
Pipo Brockmann - Boca de Tomatlán

VALLE DORADO ("Golden Valley") is basically a housing development (fraccionamiento) just  southeast of Nuevo Vallarta off highway 200, 40 minutes north of Vallarta.  The clinic took place in the secondary school on Amado Nervo street.  Juan Crisótomo Ruize de Nervo is the full name of the poet, journalist, educator and diplomat who became known simply as Amado ("Beloved") Nervo. Born in 1870, he died in 1919 and is interred in Mexico City.

This was a luxury location for the vet team and pet owners - a large garden with benches and chairs for pet owners and a large, air-conditioned classroom for surgery and recovery.  Lines began to form at 4 AM. While we regret having to turn people away as early as 6 AM, there is a great sense of gratitude we feel for responsible pet owners.  At the beginning of our program 7 1/2 years ago, we often went door to door asking people to let us sterilize their cats and dogs.  Many declined.

The local government (ayuntamiento) provided approximately 7,000 pesos worth of sutures and meds, paid the extra funds for out-of-town clinic directly to Dr. Poli, and provided daily lunches for vet team. Thank you to Jaime Cuevas, president of the municipal government for his enthusiastic participation.

The clinic in Valle Dorado was made possible by the generous donation of $10,000 US from Sharon Tognietti and Sarah Weber.  This will underwrite costs for 5 5/9 spay/neuter clinics.

COLONIA DEL MAR is located high up in the green hills about 15 minutes northeast of centro Vallarta.  Doña Rocio offers her restaurant (pozolería chilpancingo) terrace location to us annually.  Views of the far away bay are splendid. A friendly blonde Lab mix was wagging his tail in front of the building when I arrived.  He was unaltered and had a large, raw tumor on his neck.  No way to tell if he is homeless or has an owner. I opened one of the small bags of kibble we give to those in need and gave it to him.

It was very much a cat day - thirty-four of them - and only two dogs.  At 8:30, the last to arrive was a white- haired, blue-eyed  man with his matching cat "Gringa" and her three kittens. Due to a miscommunicaton, the owner returned, but only took home the mother.  Kittens are beautiful and for adoption at AngeliCAT via FB.  An attractive,  handsomely tattooed young couple brought in a rescued cat and her six kittens in cardboard boxes.  The wife spoke perfect English that she had learned in school,  and offered to help collect used towels and sheets needed for recovery tables.

EDUCATION PROGRAM:  Due to Covid-19, on hold until classes resume.

Walking by the plaza one morning, I noticed the polite young homeless man I normally see cleaning the beach in front of the fish market.  He was waiting in line for Angels Kitchen breakfast donations.  His pretty dog Lola was with him, and in a cardboard box, her eight three-week old puppies struggling to get out.  The man said he was "taking them for a walk."  They are currently living in a large plastic bin at the fish market. When I first noticed Lola was pregnant,  I offered to take her to be spayed.  Her owner declined, because "everyone wants one of her puppies."  He gave me his word that I take Lola and her family to a free clinic at eight weeks of age. Two weeks later, he had given one of the little puppies away and asked if I knew anyone he could sell the others to.

Unwanted dogs and cats are abandoned,  discarded, starved, become diseased, struck by vehicles and are sometimes abused. And they continue to breed.  Sandra Hernandez, who lives in San Vicente, Nayarit, sent me the very sad photo below, asking for help. She had been feeding the dog that often shelters from the sun and rain under a car.  Neighborhood boys were abusing him,  as well as the homeless mama dog and her nine puppies living on the same street.  This image is a familiar one, and there are worse cases.  A free spay/neuter program does the most good for the most animals.  It prevents future suffering.

A Dog´s New Life responded immediately to PEACEAnimals´ SOS for help.  The starving male dog and homeless black mama dog and her 9 puppies were picked up the same day.  All dogs now safe at the excellent shelter in Bucerias.  Unfortunately, the male dog´s infected rear left leg could not be saved, but his life was.  He has been named "Cacho" and confirmed by vet to be healthy and approximately three years old.  Leg injury probable result of having been been struck by a car.

Mamá - ahora nombrada "Sadie" -  rescatada con sus 9 bebés. Niños del barrio estaban torturando la familía y el perro cáfe abajo.  Ya todos están seguros en el refugio de A Dog´s New Life en Bucerias y para adopción.

The mama dog, now named "Sadie," and puppies are all healthy and will be available for adoption in a few weeks.  ADNL is a registered non-profit (AC) in Mexico and under the umbrella of  Banderas Bay Charities, the same 501 (c)(3) PEACEAnimals is under.  If you would like to help these new arrivals:  https://www.adogsnewlife.org/donate

Nueva rampa en el punte del río cuale

BEAUTIFICATION!  A new ramp to the isla Cuale was recently installed at the vehicular Cuale bridge. Walking east on the island, a dramatic transformation has taken place.  No longer scrabbly, rutted and uncared for empty spaces, but lovely lawns,  plants and cement pathways that wind past the statue of John Huston to the Isla Cuale cultural center.   No cats currently in sight due to work being done on the island.  This is a popular location for cat abandonment.

The very beautiful Bay of Banderas is a 42-mile horseshoe-shaped bay shared by the states of Jalisco and Nayarit. Over 3,000 feet deep, it is one of the ten deepest bays in the world.  Some believe it was formed by a volcano, but it´s an extension of a canyon that runs from Banderas valley or Ameca Valley.

THE FANTASTIC BROCKMANNS OF BANDERAS BAY
Pipo Brockmann- artist de Boca de Tomatlán

Boca de Tomatlán, 11 miles south of Puerto Vallarta, is where artist Pipo Brockmann lives in his home hanging over the Horcones river.  His house is filled with his sculptures (mostly dogs) and dozens of spectacular acrylic and oil paintings.  He was on the terrace sorting out some of his art when my friend Joyce Hartvigson and I stopped by.  Pipo is an animal lover and generously donates one of his paintings every year to the PEACEAnimals online auction. His art is sold at Contempo gallery in Puerto Vallarta.  Pipo´s brother, Brewster,  lives nearby with his wife Carmen in a house that perches on the rocky, jungled hillside overlooking Banderas Bay.  Brewster, like his brother, is a terrifically talented painter and sculptor plus owner/director of Galeria Olinalá, the oldest folk art gallery in Vallarta.  Brewster´s work is available at his gallery and shown at Galeria Pacifico in Vallarta and Maco (Hannah Waxman Design) in Punta de Mita.

"Cabeza Abstracta" - 40" x 42" mixed media paper on wood - Brewster Brockmann, artist

Art is a family affair for the Brockmanns.  In addition to Pipo and Brewster,  their mother, Marlee Brewster Brockmann, is a dazzlingly ethereal and prolific painter. Her work, both oils and pastels, is sold at Galeria Olinalá in Vallarta and Twentyone21 Collection in Truro, Massachusetts, a town close to Plymouth, where the senior Brockmanns reside half the year. The other six months are spent at their aerie overlooking Banderas Bay.  Marlee´s architect husband, architect Xavier Brockmann, is also an artist. His powerful charcoal drawings are available at Maco (Hannah Waxman Design) in Punta de Mita and at Galería Olinalá. The multi-talented Brockmann family supports their favorite local charities with donations of art.
