NAVIDAD & YERBABUENA

MASCOTA: After the heavy rains of late summer,  the narrow road climbing up the foothills of the Sierra Madres is filled with dozens of potholes,  and the yellow paint on many of the speed bumps has been washed away, resulting in some unpleasant surprises.

MASCOTA, JALISCO
Mascota is a quiet, colonial style town on a high plateau (4,921 feet/1599 meters) in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas.

The free mobile clinics always take place amidst the graceful columns and arches of the Club de Leones.  This was the fourth visit by the vet team.

CLÍNICA IN INFONAVIT

INFONAVIT - A UN LADO DEL RÍO PITILLAL

COLONIA INFONAVIT:  PEACEAnimals has visited this easy to get to location just before crossing the river into the municipality of Pitillal,  The clinic takes place in the empty police office across from a dirt field.  In back of the field is a dirt road that leads to the Pitillal river.  Sadly, the road is littered with trash and garbage.  Much of it will be carried by the river into the bay and out to sea.

On Wednesday, Dr.Poli was the only vet able to attend and managed to sterilize 26 cats and dogs on his own.

EDUCATION PROGRAM:  On Tuesday, November 12th, Leslie Caratachea presented to 30 students as the Secundaria 60 school in colonia la Aurora.

MASCOTA TO YERBABUENA AND NAVIDAD:  At Mascota we stayed overnight at the small Santa Lucia hotel boutique, a couple of blocks away from the main plaza.

HOTEL BOUTIQUE SANTA LUCIA . MASCOTA

"CHANCHITA" - HOTEL SANTA LUCIA- MASCOTA
This is a very friendly, simple  hotel owned by a charming, tall Venetian and his pretty Mexican wife.  It offers a swimming pool,  grassy garden with fruit trees, cats and dogs and "Chanchito" ("Little Pig"), an enormous Vietnamese pig. When my husband saw it from our terrace, he thought it was a boulder.  Rates include a good breakfast.

YERBABUENA ("good herb"):  After visiting the clinic on Wednesday, we drove fifteen minutes northeast on a tree-lined country road to the nearby pueblo of YerbaBuena, part of the municipality of Mascota.   The interior of one of the three or four small churches was a pretty sight.  Painted in pastel pink and green, the altar area was covered in white artificial flowers.
IGLESIA IN YERBABUENA, MUNICIPALIDAD DE MASCOTA
Across from the main plaza with its church and bandstand is a small lagoon bordered by a sidewalk.  Following the sidewalk for a short distance is a cobblestone path leading to a much larger lagoon,  home to several ducks and a solitary swan.

LA LAGUNA DE YERBABUENA

PUEBLO DE CIMARRÓN CHICO -
NAVIDAD ("Christmas"):  We continued our ascent up the serpentine, combination cobbled and paved road, passing through the tiny village of Cimarrón Chico ("small wild sheep" or "small, free spirited person").  The blue and white church adjacent to the curve in the road looked almost other worldly compared  to the nearby simple adobe and tile roofed homes.
Climbing and endlessly curving, we drove past centuries-old, blackened low stone walls and hundreds and hundreds and
hundreds of acres of cornfields glistening green in the soft sunlight.  I felt the rush of air around a curve in the road and then saw the cascade tumbling down the forested mountain.

Thirty minutes after a dazzlingly beautiful drive from YerbaBuena,  we arrived in Navidad, 6,102 feet (1,860 meters) high up in the Sierra Madres.

LLEGANDO A NAVIDAD
The only people we saw in this village were a young mother in jeans with three little girls in party dresses.  They were shouting happily as they ran races around the town square in front of the church, which was closed.  Every door on every building surrounding the town square was closed.
VISTA DEL RESTAURANTE QUE NO TENÍA NOMBRE

We walked up a flight of wooden stairs across from the plaza and found ourselves in an empty, rather large rustic restaurant.  The waitress prepared fresh orange juice and tea and told us that she thought 150 people lived in her village. The extreme beauty of the drive to Navidad is the reason to visit.
