GUACHIMONTONES/HACIENDA EL CARMEN

LA CAPELA - HACIENDA EL CARMEN

SAN JOSE DEL VALLE, NAYARIT is a forty-five minute drive northeast of centro Vallarta, winding past green fields and small towns with their plazas and churches. Tree-lined dirt roads in San José were muddied from a recent rain. The clinic took place in the large patio area of dental offices.  Numbers were lower than usual, as the location was not available on Saturday.

Neighbors had placed kibble on the ground for two very thin, medium-size dogs,  one of which was visibly pregnant.  The owner of the dogs has them living at his open-air auto repair at the corner, and refused to have any of his dogs sterilized.  Neighbors say he has "many."  The friendly tan female will give birth to her puppies in the dirt and they will all be at great risk for being hit by vehicles, contacting diseases and starvation.

PERRA PREÑADA CON DUEÑO .  SUS VECINOS ESTABAN ALIMENTANDOLA Y  SU DUEÑO NO DIÓ PERMISO PARA ESTERILIZARLA NI NINGUNO DE SUS OTRO PERROS.    SAN JOSÉ DEL VALLE, NAYAIRT -

PEACEANIMALS terminates pregnancies only at the request of owner.  It´s almost impossible to tell which dogs on the street are homeless and which have owners.

SAN VICENTE, NAYARIT is a municipality in the area of the Bay of Banderas approximately 45-minutes northeast of Vallarta.  We have visited this town several times in the past, but this was our first visit to the neighborhood of San Vincente del Mar.

The clinic took place in a small vacant one-story cement house in a neighborhood filled with dogs.  Two of the street dogs brought in for sterilization were adopted at the clinic.

I had noticed a pretty, white male terrier mix on the surgery table.  An hour later as I was walking back from my car with PEACEAnimals t-shirts, I saw a woman walking towards me with the same dog in her arms.  I called out to her asking if I could take a photo.  She soon stood in front of me silently weeping.  The little dog had been diagnosed with TVT (transmissible venereal tumor) and would die without five weekly treatments of chemotherapy.  The dog had been a gift to her in April, and unknown to anyone, already infected.  Dr. Poli asked the dog´s owner to call him in 15 days to see if the necessary meds are back in stock in our area.
CONCHA CON HERMOSO PERRITO QUE TIENE TVT (TUMOR TRANSMISIBLE VENEREA) - QUE ES CANCER
SIN QUIMOTERAPÍA, EL PERRO VA A MORIR Y AHORA NO HAY EL MEDICAMENTO EN EL ÁREA PARA TRATARLO.  A VER SI DR. POLI PUEDE CONSEGUIRLO EN 15 DÍAS.

DESUÉS DE CIRUGÍA - SAN VICENTE DEL MAR, NAYARIT

GUACHIMONTONES - The drive from Puerto Vallarta climbing over the foothills of the Sierra Madres with its surprising speed bumps and potholes, passing the turn-off to San Sebastián, descending down the winding road to Mascota  and then climbing up closer to the towering Sierra Madres took 4.5 hours.

Before entering Guachimontones,  a UNESCO World Heritage Site and on the World Monuments Watch List of the 100 Most Endangered Sites, we stopped in the small town of Teuchitlán, where stones have been appropriated over time from Guachimontones to build some of the streets and houses. The name "Teuchitllán" is derived from "Teotzitlán" ("place dedicated to the divine").

GUACHIMONTONES - COMO ERA - AS IT ONCE WAS

Five minutes on the other side of town is
Guachimontones  (meanings given to this name are either "place of gourds" or "enclosed places"), a pre-hispanic archaeological site. Dating from 300 BCE to 900 CE with its apogee from 200 to 400 CE, the area comprises 19 hectares.

The architecture is noted for its circular central plazas and conical step pyramids. One can climb a stone path up an unexcavated pyramid covered in jungle for a splendid view of la Iguana, the best preserved pyramid in the complex, and in the distance, the lake.

LA IGUANA - GUACHIMONTONES

Also on the grounds of the archaeological site is a large, attractive information center with displays, information and nice gift shop.

HACIENDA EL CARMEN is located in the heart of rich farm land,  approximately a one-hour drive west of Guadalajara and 10 km. from Guachimontones.  Construction of the hacienda began in 1722 in the characteristic austere colonial style of the time.  By the end of the 19th century, the neoclassical section of the hacienda had been completed.
ENTRADA - HACIENDA EL CARMEN
Purchased by its current owners in 1960, it took ten years to complete the extensive renovations made to the two mixed styles of Hacienda el Carmen.  The result is a beautifully restored and gorgeous hacienda.  Approximately ten years ago, the hacienda opened to the public with half-a-dozen rooms.  It now has 29 lovely rooms and suites to choose from.  www.haciendaelcarmen.com.mx
COURTYARD - HACIENDA EL CARMEN

Hacienda el Carmen is a serene and graceful place with extensive green lawns, centuries-old aqueduct, hundred-year old ule trees, swimming pool, hammocks, a small lake with paddle boats, stabled horses, bicycles (no charge for any of these), and a super luxe spa housed in a long, rectangular old stone building.
The restaurant has indoor and outdoor dining and the food is excellent, in part because much of the fruit and vegetables are grown on the property.  Also being harvested on the approximate 8 hectares are sugar cane, corn and wheat.  The restaurant is open to the public for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We spent two blissful days at this heavenly place before driving back via Compostela and the coast to Puerto Vallarta.  Even with some highway construction going on, this was a slightly faster and much easier route to take.
