| PELÍCANOS EN LA BAHÍA DE BANDERAS |
An Adventure.
A small group of friends met one morning at the pier at Boca de Tomatlán. We had hired a captain and his panga to take us to the small fishing village of Chimo, a place further south on the Bay of Banderas ("Bay of Flags”) than any of us had ever been.
Some people believe the forty-mile, horseshoe-shaped bay was formed by volcanic activity. This is not the case. The Bay of Banderas is an extension of the Ameca canyon and the Banderas canyon. The deepest part of the bay is at the point of Cabo Corrientes (“Cape Currents”), where it measures 3,000 feet (900 meters). We would be heading there.
Dangling our arms over the edge of the panga, we felt the warm temperature of the water as we sped along the rocky coastline. As we passed the beach village of Yelapa, we felt the coolness coming down from the Sierra Madres. One-and-a-half hours after leaving Boca, we arrived at the small fishing village of Chimo.

As it was still too early for lunch and there was no sandy beach, we asked our captain if there were enough gasoline to go further south to the open ocean. "No." But a smiling driver of a water taxi anchored off the rocky shore said he could sell us a tank of gas for 200 pesos.

Minutes after leaving Chimo, looming in the distance is an imposing rock formation not far out in the water from the cascading green foothills. It is called "el catedral" ("the cathedral") or "las iglesias" ("the churches") by locals. Its two arched tunnels resemble oversize doorways of a grand church or cathedral which would have vaulted ceilings inside. As with other arches found in nature, they are erosions caused by wind and/or water.

The water was getting rougher. High up on a promontory marking the spot where the bay ends, is a forlorn looking lighthouse. Still in use, it serves as a warning for boats that might founder on the rocky cliffs below.

We turned around at this longest undeveloped coastline in Mexico and motored for twenty or thirty minutes north, anchoring at one of the most fantastically beautiful beaches I have ever seen. If I had flown half-way around the world for this, I would have thought it was worth it.

Twenty or thirty minutes later we were back in Chimo. Walking past black vultures hopping and pecking near a tidal wash lagoon, we sat down in another palapa-roofed restaurant.

WEATHER: After weeks of oppressive heat and humidity, they were broken by a couple of heavy rains. Locals are commenting that July, normally a rainy month, had much less rain than last year. The combined extreme heat and humidity, preventing rainfall, is called a "canícula" ("dog hot day"). This condition has existed on the southern Pacific coast of Mexico for many years and is new for Vallarta.
VILLA DE GUADALUPE - Rutted, muddy roads after the rain, and an absence of street signs made this a much longer drive than what Google Maps indicates as a 31-minute drive from our home in centro.
This colonia close to the foothills is quiet, very green, mostly clean, and with many cats and dogs on the paved and dirt streets, plus a scattering of chickens, turkeys and burros.
The clinic took place in "Salon don Margarito," a mustard colored, very open and spacious event rental space. There were very few pets at the clinic when I arrived shortly after 9 AM, so I walked to the nearby Pitillal river to ask residents if they would like to bring their cats and dogs to the clinic. Although there are signs above the low, brown river advising that is illegal to toss trash, sadly that law is not fully observed.
Walking back, I saw an emaciated white, timid female dog with a collar fashioned out of blue twine. I ran to a corner mercado to buy food for her, but she had disappeared. Returning to the clinic, Ofelia Osuna McHugh, board member, had just arrived with Tammy Pasatiempo, a longtime friend of hers from Seattle.
Later in the morning, a few of the women and children I had spoken with started bringing in their pets. One particularly enthusiastic pet owner also wrote down the names of neighbors who would come on Friday. One of the names was of a man who owns two large dogs but is unable to walk and would need help. A short-haired, blonde woman who arrived with her granddaughter and a large dog stayed on, saying she wanted to help. As she wasn´t familiar with monitoring vital signs, she chose to sweep the entire large salon. The lovely woman also offered her home in another colonia for a clinic. Ofelia gave her taxi money to get home, as the dog was too woozy to walk that far after surgery.
I had encouraged three young boys who lived next to the river to have their puppies sterilized, but their father refused. A hour later, they arrived at the clinic with a tiny, very young and very skinny black female puppy wrapped in an old pair of blue underwear. Although all her bones were protruding, her belly was hugely extended, evidence that her intestines were engorged with parasites. The puppy had been found next to the river, always a handy place to throw unwanted kittens and puppies. We gave it water and one of the sausages I had bought for the starving dog and then Ofelia and Tammy drove her to the SPCAPV. Happily the puppy tested negative for diseases and will be for adoption in a few weeks.
Tammy, whose husband is on the board of directors of the Humane Society in Seattle, is a passionate animal advocate and has pledged to underwrite a PEACEAnimals clinic.
The new banners were here for this clinic, thanks to Linda Hunt´s donation. Our old ones were stolen, not out of maliciousness, but because someone must have needed them for shelter or a doorway or curtain, etc.

It took more than double that time to arrive at the clinic in Villa de Guadalupe. Named after the Virgin of Guadalupe (no villa in sight), a small, terra cotta statue of her has been place in front of a modern, three-walled colorful church with a grey-stained, domed roof.

NOTE: PEACEAnimals, per our agreement with independent contractors, Pets for Life, is obliged to pay extra for driving time and gasoline for areas outside Puerto Vallarta. We ask that private or government groups pay those extra expenses.
PEACEAnimals does not buy advertising or pay for posters, flyers, megaphone announcers or locations. All monies raised go directly to actual costs of the clinics. Dr. Poli, as director of PEACEAnimals, a Mexican AC (non-profit) and Pets for Life, a Mexican SC (business), selects clinic locations.
All pet registration forms with signatures of owners or rescuers are submitted by Dr. Poli to the local department of health, with copies to PEACEAnimals.
