At first, we thought the dark object we saw in the water was a manta ray. Getting closer, Daniel, captain of the panga, confirmed that it was in fact a "vela" - sailfish. The question was asked, "how does one tell at first glance the difference between a sailfish and a swordfish?"

VELA - SAILFISH - BAHÍA DE BANDERAS |
Both fish are members of the perciformes (billfish) family. They both hunt with their spears. The swordfish is larger, up to 4 meters in length, while the sailfish has a maximum length of 3 meters. The smaller size of the sailfish enables it to swim faster - up to 110 km/h in a sprint, making it the fastest fish in the world. Thes fastest speed for a swordfish is 80 km/h. The sailfish lives up to 4 years and the swordfish can live up to 9 years.
The easiest way to identify these fish is by their fins and by their colors. The sailfish has a long dorsal fin thar runs almost the entire length of its body. The fin is retractable and can be used to create a wall to stop small fish from escaping. The dorsal fin of the swordfish is rigid and upright. The color of the swordfish is dark on top and white below. The sailfish´s color changes. It normally looks bluish-silver, but turns almost black at the moment just before of an attack.

SAILFISH - VELA |
Daniel cut off the engine for several minutes so we could admire the seemingly friendly sailfish on the nearby surface of the water. Soon, a fishing boat slowly approached, as two men went for their gear at the back of it. We shouted out in Spanish, "Leave the vela in peace - it´s part of our family." The boat continued its approach, so we left what had been a very peaceful place.
The bay of banderas in Puerto Vallarta is popular amongst sportsfishermen for swordfish. Daniel said that half the these powerful fish, after a long and grueling struggle, are released. To see a beautiful creature fighting hard for its life, with almost no chance to win, seems to me a bit like watching a bullfight.

SWORDFISH - PEZ ESPADA |
Our next encounter with an animal was sadly a recently dead baby dolphin, It was about a meter-and-a -half in length, meaning it was only a few weeks old. Karla de la Peña reported this sighting to ECOBAC.
At least one recent study on cetacean neurology has demonstrated that dolphins and whales possess specialized, human-like "spindle" neurons, which are the brain cells linked to empathy, grief and intuition in humans. Other animals that mourn their dead are elephants, chimps, and surprising to me, giraffes and jay birds.

June and July are the months for turtles to lay their eggs on the beaches - about 100 eggs per nest. Some of these nests will be protected, and some of the eggs will be dug up, counted, dated, and put in a beach "corral." Other nests will be invaded by dogs and devoured, and some humans will take the eggs to sell. We saw about eight sea turtles while cruising around the bay. They all took quick, loud gulps of air as we came near to them, and then immediately submerged and disappeared. Humans can be dangerous.

FAR OUT INTO THE BAY - MAKING A MANDALA WHILE WAITING FOR DOLPHINS TO SWIM PAST. HACIENDO UNA MANDALA MUY LEJOS DE LA ORILLA MIENTRAS ESPERANDO LOS DELFINES. |
Joy! Motoring to the south, we encoutered what were probably two different pods of dolphins. Dozens were racing with us, many of them breaching repeatedly, and some of them as close as a meter away from the panga. We could have touched them if we had reached down far enough. Daniel sped out in front of them so we could jump into the water as they swam in our direction. Although skies were many shades of grey on Sunday, the water was dark blue, transparent and almost warm (current temperature - 21-22 centigrade). Alas, the dolphins always swam around us, but Karla, who dove down deep below the surface, could hear them returning her "eee-eee" sounds.

On Thursday morning, Leslie Caratachea, our vet tech, called to advise me not to come to the clinic. Road repairs are being done on the southern traffic side of the ameca river bridge, and the return home would take approximately two hours. Clinics are a joyful part of my week, so I missed going to this one. Thank you to volunteers Linda Stewart and Frank Ohly for their good photos, including two of what we normally don´t see - obse dogs. Leslie had a friendly talk with the owners regarding health issues. On Wednesay, our first day of a clinic week and often our slowest, 51 cats and dogs were sterilized. Because of the many unsterilized animals in this colonia, PEACEAnimals will return to the same location next week. Locals are raising the 4,000 extra pesos for this out-of-town clinic.
